I am having to do a report at work on DVI and VGA...

And I found this on Wiki - DisplayPort

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort
http://www.displayport.org/

Any one heard of this being used live yet?

JC invented them. Then was cruelly cheated out of the design, and didn't get any of the profits.

buy an xbxox

Don't the newer Apple MacBook Pros use a variant of this connector?

My Macbook Pro has one (well, a mini one). I'm not clear on what DisplayPort does that HDMI 1.3 doesn't.

I think it is something to do with the way the clocks are sync'd. I will look it up at work.

Oh, I read up on it. There are some minor technical differences but the only important looking one was that DisplayPort is royalty free and HDMI has a licencing cost associated with using it. Computer manufacturers hate that sort of thing. Also, mini DisplayPort is Apple proprietary but they are trying to get it included in the standard.

all of this would be excellent IF hdmi was damn near ubiquitous now. I love the fact that VGA still persists. It makes me warm inside.

I belive so, but I am open to being corrected.

I mean,

The computer is digital - converts to analouge - sends down cable - analouge to digital conversion - screen displays
or
The computer is digital - sends down cable - screen displays.

Less conversion so better?

Unless it's DAB versus FM. In which case it clearly isn't.

In a display context, i belive digital is better than analouge.

Happy now?

I find CRt projectors give a much more pleasant image than the harsh grid of LCD.

Many professionals find that an analogue monitor better represents the colour spectrum and makes matching output easier.

I'm just saying...

Man, you're stretching yourself thin here. Kov vs Everyone on 2 fronts.

Yes, CRTs are still used by people who absolutely need 100% of the NTSC colour range to be visible.

What will happen when VGA is eventually phased out?

Eh? NTSC has less colour range than PAL IIRC. The black level is higher by about 30 on the RGB scale. Tis why if I shoot in NTSC and then view it on a PAL monitor all the blacks look grey.

Broadcasters still use them. I have a 14 inch portable on the edit suite as well as its easy to check interlacing issues on a proper CRT. Broadcast spec CRT's are expensive, broadcast spec LCD's are obscenely expensive. You can spend 20 grand without trying too hard on a reference quality LCD.

I don't mind at all.. I had never heard of the Display Port Adaptor, hence I created the thread. As teh DP does not support analouge, it was fair to presume as VGA is 20 years old, it had been superceeded.

I have never seen or used broadcast spec CRTs or LCDs.

Thanks for widening my knowledge :)

So other than Broadcast spec.. where else are CRTs better? Honest question.

Acording to NEC the DICOM LCDs are brill, but they are expensive and can be calibrated
