I just got the deal of the decade lmao. If I have then I definitely have a gift with Nvidia cards..

I got a 5900 for $130 years ago and it was worth $400 (pricing error it seems). I got a 9800GT last year for 100 when it was worth 150 (pounds) and I just ordered one of these, over the phone for 175 delivered.

http://www.okobe.co.uk/ws/product/XFX+GeForce+GTX+280+1GB+DDR3+SDRAM+Graphics+Card/1000010702?ref=1q4bs

There was two in stock. just done a refresh and one is now gone, leaving one in stock.

Its apparently shipping tomorrow via courier, so it's a serious nailbite and shake and tremble to see if it arrives via the courier on thursday.

If it does? I'm going to throw a party

No dude. I ordered one from another site (which Im not going to post to tempt fate) for 175.99 delivered. The cheapest one I can find is 360 + shipping.

It's the exact same card as the one I linked to that they want over 400 for.

If it arrives ok, will you give us the link?

Not that I can afford a new card, but I know several people who might be interested.

Sure :)

There's only one of those left, but they also have the 260GTX black edition for 119, 50 cheaper than anywhere else.

What will the new card do that your old card is crippling you with, or is it gadget lust?

I know this is going to sound incredibly silly, but bear with me.

A few weeks ago I downloaded the uber texture (cinematic mod) for Fallout 3. The difference is astounding. Really truly astounding (see pic)

http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/3576/f ... 004qf3.jpg

Sadly when I was faced with a rad scorpion my humble 512mb texture memory showed it's weakness. The game crawled to a stop and I had to disable the texture pack :(

It's totally given me a hard on though. I mean, I love fallout 3. It's far more than a videogame to me it's a way of life. There isn't a week that goes by without me spending a few hours in the wastelands.

So for that alone I think it's VFM. Not only that, but with the 280 my framerates will triple over what I have now. I can max out resolutions, anti alias and all that lovely stuff. Then later in the year when Wolfie comes out I won't have to faff around doing it all then. Best to grab the bargain when it comes along IMO.

Good part is after finding out about voltage adjustments my humble core 2 duo is now thundering along @ 2.9ghz a core completely stable (its been running orthos for 24 hours now) and hasn't fallen over, so I won't need a new cpu this year.

I'm not trolling you, but out of those three grabs, I have to say I prefer the first one. It looks more like you'd see it with your eyes.

The last one looks like a ray-trace by an in-experienced 3d artist. Too much detail in the foreground - what's the point if it should be focussed out due to depth of field anyway?

If you're comparing the second and third grab.. Well, there's no difference there. Maybe if you zoom in, but who cares? It's certainly not >100 quid worth of difference, at the very least :D

I've seen it running. It makes an incredible difference, honestly.

Plus being able to max out Crysis will be a sight to behold.

You forgot...
D) Opened by the Postman to determine the value of the item. The more expensive it is deemed to be, the more chance you have of finding it hidden in a bush.

Or has the "we accept your offer on postage" clause in the T&C's kicked in to avoid pricing fuckups?

28 May 2009 08:23 Portsmouth On vehicle for delivery, using Saturn

I didn't know the couriers were Sega fans.

Anyhoo. Did some poking around last night with the model number GX-280N-ZDE for the card and it turns out it's the extreme edition.

Difference is it's overclocked to 640mhz instead of the stock 602.

However, it's not all good news. It seems that to run either the 280 GTX, 285 GTX or 295 GTX you need to have an 8 pin PCIE2 connector and a 6 pin PCIE connector. It's basically because these fuckers need wiring to the national power grid to work. This is an issue because PCIE2 didn't come along until after my PC was built, so I don't have the 8 pin connector :(

However after looking around for hours I found a 6-8 pin adapter and the card comes with a 2 molex to 6 pin adaptor.

Kinda sucks 'cos I've got to wait for the adapter to arrive, but it'll be worth the wait. I've been reading benchmarks on the 280gtx extreme and it can push out Doom 3 at over 300 frames per second :)

Why would you want to use a brand-new gfx card to play a five year old game at a FPS that your eyes can't even see?

Fucking hell that is (physically) one big brute of a card. Also ugly as hell, but it's going inside the machine so who cares, right.

Nice though, getting it that cheap.

It's like one of those pimped up Vauxhell Novas. Garish, loud and ultimately pointless casing.

Anyway that graphics card is shite compared to this one:

http://www.comcheck.co.uk/products.asp?partno=VCQFX5600SDI-PCIE-PB

5 and a half grand + VAT.

I imagine the Doom framerate is so fast it would instantly burn your retinas out if you looked at the screen.

[edit] Actually turns out its probably slower. Who'd have thought it eh?

Just what I was about to say, that Quadro card is the same GPU as the Geforce 8800 Ultra, so certainly much slower in games than John's card. When you buy a Quadro, you're not paying for performance. You're paying for pro-grade support, for extra OpenGL functions in the driver that is disabled on the Geforce cards and only of interest to CAD users and the like, and monstrous RAM that no game would take advantage of. And you're paying through the nose because that's the cost the market will bear, the cost of manufacture of one of these boards is barely different to the consumer ones.

There was an early Geforce you could solder a wire across two pins and reflash the firmware to turn it into a Quadro that retailed for five times as much money. nVidia are a lot smarter about locking them down now of course.

This thread is pissing me off. It's been constantly hovering near the top with 'crapping my pants' all week but still no hilarious anecdotes of pants-shittage have been posted. It's still all this dullard talk of getting an extra three frames per second before your game crashes and you switch your DS on in disgust anyway.

Quadros are a complete con. I remember back in the Ge3 days you could solder a jumper onto a Geforce 3 and turn it into a quadro.

Sure, they're specced well, but the price tag is aimed at business. A complete con.

Yeah, probably :D

They're not a con either. They're just market segmentation in action, just like supermarket own-brand baked beans versus Heinz.

Hey, I tried my best*.
