Hello.

Something appears to have happened to the power supply of my macbook. If I plug the little magnetic lead into the macbook no little light comes on (usually it goes orange or green), but with the price for the power supplies being so heart-attack inducingly expensive I wondered if there was an alternative? I don't want anything that might damage my laptop, but as there is a chance that it is something other than the power supply then £60 for a plug and wire (and some gubbins) seems a little high. If there are no alternatives then fair enough, but I thought I'd ask the knowledgeable folks here first (all three of you).

How old is the unit and what care have you taken to ensure it's not been damaged by you? If the laptop is only a couple of years old and is mainly used in a desk area, I'd go back to the supplier, fling the sale of goods act at them and demand they do something. At worst, you should get the part at cost. (This happened to me with my 23" ACD power unit, a part known to fail sooner than expected. In the end, the company in question agreed to sell me one at cost and deliver it for free.)

To be fair it has travelled about 6 - 10,000 miles in it's lifetime, so maybe I haven't been as loving towards it as I should have. I think if it does mean acquiring a new one I will have to purchase one rather than hope they'll replace it. I've been very nice to my laptop, but I guess I looked at it as just a(n unbelievably expensive) plug.

The thing is, I kind of knew from reading ages ago that they could be a bit flakey, so I should have nestled it up my jumper when travelling and treated it like a baby bird, but it was just a plug

It's just a plug, but it's an expensive one with proprietary parts. I take it you've tried ensuring there's no crap on the plug and in its slot on the laptop?

Yup, it is free of jam and cornflakes (A t'internet friend of mine took her laptop to the Apple store to get angry with some folks as to why it wasn't working at only two months old to be told that it might have been that both the supply and port were 'covered in... what is that? Jam, perhaps?')
