HELLO!

I hereby demand that we go to a good pub (Pen & Wig or City Arms are my suggestions) and drink a lot of beer and talk crap. Oh yes.

I propose that this take place on the evening of either next Monday or Tuesday (11 or 12 of May) at a time to be determined (6pm? Later?).

All are welcome to attend, the last few meets have been high successful and enjoyable, from what I can remember of them.

Current attendees:
-myself
-Governmentyard
-nervouspete

Anyone else up for it? Any issues or preferences for a particular evening? I would prefer if it were Monday, but am flexible.

I was in the sandwich shop today and a bloke in a suit had his mobile phone out. He received a text message, and his SMS tone was "Ah, what's occurring?" from that stupid-as-shit Scott Mills show on Radio 1.

I felt like clipping him around the back of the ear and telling him to grow up.

What shit Welsh sitcom would that be? I'd never heard the sound before Scott Mills' show.

Yeah, it's from that. Scott Mills made it into a ring tone after stealing it for his annoying quiz.

You know, when I first came down to Cardiff I did a quick zombie impression at the bar, saying, "Brainzzzz, brainzzzz! Feed me brainzzz." No one laughed or even smiled. I was further surprised that I never heard anyone else in Cardiff do it, reference or even acknowledge the joke. Then my mate Hardy came down and did the same thing I did, to the same effect. We're both baffled.

Also, Brains is a shit beer. (Aside from the rather fine 45 continental.) Cardiffians have been fooled into thinking it's good, due to the shady Welsh Nationalism and Al Capone strong-arming of the brewery. I say Boo-Urns to Brains. Official.

Therefore a pub with a good ale mix, ta. Precious few as they are.

The food in Brains pubs is excellent*, and some of the Buckley's stuff is quite good as well. But SA hurts your head after a few pints, and Rev James is a bit weak ABV wise.

Regardless, SA lets you pull classy specimens like this girl from some dark corner of the valleys:

so it's all good.

How wrong can you be sir?

Brains 45 is undrinkable piss, or at least it was they launched it - I believe it's been re-formulated since though, and as long as you avoid the 'smoothe' then S.A. is fine for a few pints between wifebeater of whatever.

Yer, I know. It just struck me while I was digging out pete's XP disc that I hadn't seen him or Government Yard in far too long, and decided the time had come to return to the pub.

But still, all lovely people are welcome to attend if they can make it.

And perhaps a more organised pissup in future!

1: Pen and Wig for me, with a cheeky mention of the excellent Albany, full Brains selection plus everything else you'd want, great staff and a guest ale at all times, poured by a bloke with a curly 'tache and a waistcoat. Called Rich. It's not in town as such and it's my local, but it merits consideration for any Cardiff pub meet on it's night.

2: Dom - bumsocks. I for got you had this week coming up.

3: Mars will probably come because she likes Pete.

4: Brains rundown:

Brains bitter. Ordinary bitter. Served in cask locally I find. Also Brains Smooth, same but worse - Louis Pasteur be damned.
Hancocks - Like all session bitters, it tastes of the Seventies.
Rev. James - Not as good as you'd think, a functional Dark in a crisis.
Brain's Dark - A zippy sport model VW Polo to the Rev. James' unweildy Rover saloon, this mild drink is a good one for when you don't want to keep pace with others. Nice with roll-up fags in the beer garden watching the football on a cold windy evening.
SA - Brains is indeed a zombie Brewery - mistakenly attributed to SA Brain, the founder of the eponymous brewery, SA stands for 'Skull Attack' and like Tanglefoot it is 'deceptively drinkable'. Unlike Tanglefoot, which is a Johnny Depp kind of drunk, Skull Attack is a fighting beer as lairy as Stella in the summer or a two-litre placcy flagon of Frosty Jack's any morning of the year. You have to have a couple, just to get it, but lager is only half the story in those pictures of Cardiff that did the rounds the other week.
SA Gold - wank.
45 - Gay name, summer lagered pint of affordability and comfort. It's no Becks, for example, but it gets the job done and is a patriotic option for the Cardiff dweller. I get friends to have a go.

That said, it's a fucking monopoly and I'm fed up of it.

Aww, I really wish I could come now! Maybe something can be organised for later in the year? Rich might want his jacket back as autumn approaches. ;)

The Albany is a lovely pub, and Rich has a majestic 'tache, and the beer garden is like summit out of a novel - you just don't expect the place to have one.

S.A. is fine though - sure it occasionaly lives up to it's name, as hinted above, but I really don't undersand dakm or daaaaaaaaark as my uncle calls it.

Horrid stuff.

The good reverend is drinkable, and as you say, S.A. Gold is shite.

After this thread I bought a big bottle of Dark from the service station on the way home. Mrs Metal and I took it in turns swigging from it and arguing about what it tasted like.

I heartily support going to the Albany, you've certainly gone on about it enough times Mr Yard. Besides, I'm running out of pubs in the city itself that I haven't been to.

Yes, but he can only use the safety scissors, and must be home before ten.

I too agree with the Albany, it's been a while since I've been there and I've never drunk in the beer-garden. And Rich is indeed awesome, and the place has the odd guest ale. Good Brains beers list earlier, by the way. :)

I think this one is tucked away near the playing fields nr Roath Park (as that's where Mr Governmentyard lives... not in the actual park, but very very near it).

That curry was LUSH.

Indeed it was. I've been back there a few times since and they've been totally excellent every time.

They have a restaurant less than five miles from your house that not only does takeaways but has a drive-through pickup point for them. I'm just saying.

Hmmm. Nice though that is, it will have to compete with my local place which is within walking distance (hence allowing pints and pints of lovely Kingfisher).

No. But there's something rather nice about sitting in a restaurant, having the stuff served in the proper dishes, by a waiter, with the big tray of chutney and pickles, and not having to do any fucking dishes.

It's for this reason I've not had a takeaway from my local takeaway ruby in months.

I'll grant you that takeaways and restaurant eating are different, but I'm not sure takeaways are worse. Sometimes I want to eat in pyjamas infront of the TV.

I'll grant you that takeaways and restaurant eating are different, but I'm not sure takeaways are worse. Sometimes I want to eat in pyjamas infront of the TV.

No. But there's something rather nice about sitting in a restaurant, having the stuff served in the proper dishes, by a waiter, with the big tray of chutney and pickles, and not having to do any fucking dishes.

With takeaways you are guaranteed re-heated curry for your hangover proof lunch the next day though.. Which is often more awesome than the original meal for some reason.
