It's acebest but so huge it would take 2 weeks to see it all. How have I been to the V&A 15+ times yet not been to the British Museum once? No idea. Anyway, I loves it this much -> (insert picture of a giant glitter-covered spork with a sticker of Dangermouse on it).

Anyway, I realise that I always go to the same museums when I am in London (mostly V&A, plus Natural History and Science museums) but I bet there is a world of unknown excellence in museum form that I have not explored in this city yet.

Please, tell me of it (apart from the Design Museum, which when I went was shockingly bad - if yo were thinking of going ALL of the best design can be seen in the gift shop, which is free to enter.)

OK, now I would like a long bath and foot rub :smug:

I would like to recommend the Horniman Museum. That's purely because the name makes me snigger though, I have no idea what's actually there.

There. You've no need to bother going now and you can send me the money the ticket would have cost.

I quite liked the National Army Museum and the grounds of the Chelsea Pensioners when I was a child, not been in about 20 years mind.

The Museum of London (near Barbican) is worth a visit. It's absolutely huge, you'll never see it all in one day... so pick the bit that interests you most. I wasn't too fussed over the Roman stuff, so I just stayed in the Victorian bit.

The London Transport Museum (Covent Garden) is pretty good. It's not as good as it used to be (there's not nearly as many vehicles on display as there used to be) but it's recently been remodelled so it's very slick. Since you pretty much can't get around London without using the public transport, you'll at least be sorta familiar with the subject matter.

The RAF Museum (Hendon) is meant to be excellent (again, if you're interested in that sort of thing) but I've not been yet. I *need* to go, though, it's got Hurricanes and Typhoons and even a Liberator! And a Vimy.

The Imperial War Museum (Elephant and Castle) is astonishing - it's absolutely, stupidly big. I spent an entire day and still had to rush to get through all of the World War 1 bit alone.

Alas, two of my old favourites - the Toy and Model Museum (brilliant old toys) and the Museum of the Moving Image (film, television and similar) are both gone.

I only recently heard of the Museum of London, I am hoping that we can go there before we head back, it sounds great!

Though:

The lower galleries at Museum of London, which explore the city’s history from 1666 onwards, are closed until 2010 for an exciting transformation.

Exciting news! The first object has been installed in the new galleries.

I guess that's a big chunk of the museum if it is 1666 onwards until the present - not sure if that is what it means, though. I would have thought that they might have redeveloped smaller sections bit by bit.

Oh. Well, that to me was the most interesting bit of the Museum of London, so I guess best to wait until it reopens. Unless you like your dull bits of broken old pots, that is.

I went to Hendon a couple of months ago after an absence of about 15 years and it's excellent. Getting to walk about under the wing of a Vulcan was mental.

A few pics here.

I liked V&A museum. All the huge plaster replicas are amazing.

Not really near by or anything, but kelvingrove museum in Glasgow is awesome.

Plus it has Christ of St John of The Cross on display which is fantastic. There is a museum of transport in Glasgow too but it's a bit crap. I really REALLY want to go to the imperial war museum in London, miss SDG went with her uni (she studied history) just after I met her and I was so jealous because they had an RAF exhibit as well.
I think I'll try to get to London sometime soon,I've only been once when I was a wee person.

Aye, those were my favourite things in the V&A, especially the column so tall it had to be split into sections. The oddness & eccentricity tickled me.

Aye & it's got a Doctor Who exhibition on just now :)

Not in London, but the Fleet Arm Museum (Naval Aviation) in Yeovilton is, if you'll pardon the pun, fucking ace.

Agreed! I almost went to see the science museum too (or whatever it is, in the armadillo thing?) but the price was very high and it looked extremely kid-oriented.

Good tram exhibition though.

Must check out some of the London ones next time. Usually do galleries, but you can see too much modern art after a point.

Aye, the price is quite steep, but I fair enjoyed it both times I've been. Plus, if you time it so there's something you want to see at the imax you can get a combined ticket which was a fair bit cheaper.

For anyone in London right now, look up. There's a Fleet Air Arm centenary flyby - 40 choppers in a line made up of Lynxes, Sea Kings, and Merlins. It's a pretty impressive display.

My mate used to be a spannawanka on the Merlins. Out of interest, have they stopped droping out of the sky due to the cluth plates engaging and stopping the rotors? He was dead pleased that he found out it was that after one of his that he'd signed off as "fit to fly" went down, as it was a design fault and not his.
