Bloody, bloody Hell. Why is E-Swat so brutally hard?! It's also completely different than the Amiga version. Why is this also?

Surprise favourite game so far is Flicky. I've never played that before, but it reminds me a lot of Car-vup. Excellent platformery collecting fun.

Flicky is one of the most dramatically underrated games of the 16-bit era.

Work on getting through Shinobi III, if it's on that collection, mate. It's completely acebest, and improves on 'Revenge' in almost every way, I think. It also features some of the loveliest graphics and art direction you'll see on the MD, and a lot of cool bosses.

(Of course, I'm aware that most people around here hate bosses now. Boo sucks to them!)

That's on the Master System built in one: in Miracle World. You have to buy a crystal ball to allow you to predict the enemy gesture. Losing JANKEN means you instantly lose a life. :(

Oh I got the achievement, it's the fucking game itself. It's like trying to do trigonometry while the ceiling is swiftly lowering to crush you.

If this collection taught me anything it's that by picking the SNES I chose the right side in the Nintendo/Sega 16-bit console war.

Comix Zone was good though.

Still love Streets of Rage 1-3, plus I can at least stomach Sonic for a while. Flicky's been an immensely pleasant surprise, as I've already said. Still to try the RPGs on here as of yet. Ecco is as boring as I remember playing it at the Gamesmaster Live thing in Brummingum.

How about the 'mercian title for this then? "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection" Bit insulting to their audience intelligence thinking they wouldn't know what "Sega" meant.

is flicky the one where you get the chicks avoid the cats and escape? if so I liked that aswell.

anyway i managed ot do dr robotnik on my second time and the columns achievement on my second time as well using th epause cheat. Actually when i avhieved the scored for the achievement I just played normally and doubled my score.

Also I'd say e-swat was the hardest to get, but the save states dont half help that, its pretty brutal the first level though how its so linear that you actually are made to do a setr outine throughout the whole level.

It was the boss that kept kicking my arse on that 1st level.

I love the way they've included the arcade games as extras. Zardoz alert! Space Harrier!

In alot of ways its a really good package, easilt the best they've done so far, but they've clearly kept stuff out as you can tell by the soon to be gunstar heroes xbla game. A game people would be happy to pay 1200 no fuck off MS, no this time 800 points for, yet the inclusion of dynamite headdy shows it could of been on the collection.

Phantasy Star IV remains one of my all-time favourite RPGs - it's where I got my username from after all. The only slight issue being that the plot is a continuation of the one from PS I & II (Phantasy Star III is the odd one out of the series, made by a different team with an unrelated plot), though I doubt it's that important knowing all the history and so on to get into the game.

Also it doesn't have the lock-on, but the XBLA sonic and knuckles will.

I liked Mean Bean Machine (apart from the young-teen Nintendo purist in me resenting the absence of Puyo-related nomenclature). Sure, it was annoying, but there was something compelling about those 'things falling from the top of the screen' games.

Phantasy Star IV is amazing. I still prefer the original on the Master System. Love the series, too bad now Sega only cares about the online aspect of it.

Maybe it was for the best, because it would be surely full of Anime furries and gayness.

Of course I'm playing against the AI. Everything happens so fast that there's no tactical decisions possible, just blind luck. And when your oppo is pelting you with combos at the same time... GAH

Ristar is a pleasant little platformer, isn't it?

Advice : If you find youself playing against the AI, don't.

I don't know if I'll bother with this - most of the stuff on there I either already own in ORIGINAL CARTRIDGE FORMAT (because I liked it) or rented and hated and so didn't buy. Comix Zone, for example. Yes, a very cool idea, nice artwork, yadda yadda yadda. But the fighting is shit, it's too hard and you never get enough health pickups. I think it's only six 'pages' long, I was dead by about the second row of the third, every time. And then I have to start again from the beginning? Ooooh!

I can't remember which Shinobi I have... what I do remember is the one I have has a first level boss who's almost impossible to beat without using a super power (and dies easily if hit twice with one) as he's a giant samurai that your shurikens bounce off. And then later, you're fighting NEO ZEED (why don't we have games with ludicrous names like that any more?) soldiers with fucking machineguns and you have... well, still just knives.

Having to play fucking janken in Alex Kidd always killed me when playing it on my friend's Master System. I even remember the naff music when Alex and his foe start bending their knees repeatedly in preparation.

E-Swat isn't too bad... certainly, they made a lot more of it than the arcade version (DON'T SHOOT THE GIRL). The voice samples in particular are great - "Them the breaks!"

I think it was just a case of hitting him in the face with them as you reached the top of your jump.

As for Mean Bean Machine, I don't remember the AI being that bad - I certainly completed it as a child. Mind you, that probably means I'd struggle now.

I've tried that. It only seemed to work if I somehow managed to jump over him and hit him in the BACK of the head before he turned. It's the way he holds his sword, it deflects everything his armour doesn't.

Damn, that rings a bell. I can't remember if you have to encourage him to swing his sword to leave him vulnerable. It's obviously been far too long as I can't remember which Shinobi you're talking about either - I'd guess at Revenge of Shinobi though.

Er... the levels as I remember are Japanese Castle, Waterfall, Tokyo, Airplane, Junkyard... that's as far as I got. Spider-man allegedly makes an appearance later on.

I just defeated this guy (the Blue Lobster Samurai) by using the Self Destruct Power once and then another power once I reincarnated. He only chops at you when he's pretty much guaranteed a hit, and I think you turn around if you try to hop backwards.

That's definitely Revenge of Shinobi.
I don't think I ever played it without using the infinite shurikens cheat, so I just used to keep somersaulting and firing loads at him until he died. Still don't think I ever finished it, but a level on a highway rings a bell.

The only thing I remember about the Amiga version of E-Swat was that it was utter drivel.

The level where you have no jetpack and have to scramble around through a tunnel is marvellously paced, so many narrow escapes and quick jumps.

This collection has Shinobi III and the arcade version of the first. Brings back memories of playing it on Skegness pier.
