You will want/need a hard drive if you buy an Arcade John. Better off going for on with a HD from the start really.

Hmm, how much more dough am I looking though?

I literally want it for about 5 games tops. All of which are arcade type games (SF4 being the first).

Because of that I'll probably flash the drive over sata meaning I can't take it online (and won't because I don't want to pay a sub).

Does the 360 run emulators?

I would love to have snes, Neo Geo etc. More than the 360 tbh. Can I do that with an oldskool Xbox? If so I might just get one of them.

About £30 I think.

The beauty is you can take it online for £5 for a month (Actually, if you buy one I'll send you my months sub card I have). You have to see how well the whole thing is done before taking it to H4XX0R town.

Don't know, don't care tbh. I wouldn't do without bezzie gaming for the sake of gutting my box, aswell as voiding the warranty (which I've needed to fall back on, twice :)) I couldn't be without Live.

What are you waiting for?

I have one if you want it (Soft modded). I'd imagine the postage would cost more than the £20 I'd want for it. Weigh a fucking tonne!

I need it modded so I can play emulators on it. Snes, MD, etc.

I haven't a jar of glue how it all works.

TBH you'd be better going into gamestation or where-ever to pick up an old pre-owned one cheap and getting a loan of the bits to mod it yourself

I can't see it costing more than a tenner tbh. I just had an A4 scanner couriered here for that.

Depends on how far away you are, but I don't think it's so much weight more package size.

Zaphod here sent me a Gamecube with about 100 games for about 6 quid shipping.

I'm definitely decided though. All I want is something that runs snes and md and plugs into my telly and has a controller and I'm happy :)

Wish I'd realised that the gamecube had a faffing snes emu *before* I sold it on. LOL !!

I'll find out how much it will cost to post and let you know. To be fair though they are dirt cheap to buy second hand from Gamestation. Have a look online to see how to go about modding it in the meantime.

There might be a few sites that will help make it look like a vintage tram too. ;)

Does this one make sense to you MrD?

I've bagged all the software it says you need but it seems pretty confusing to me.

It seems with this one you don't need any other bits or parts.

The G.Guide is confusing because it's detailed, and it's detailed because I wrote it. I figured it's better than a bunch of contradictory forum posts.

That other guide basically uses the Xbox to 'unlock' the hard drive so it's ready to be accessed by your PC. It's encrypted, in a way. The guide asks you to unplug the IDE cable from your Xbox HD while its on, and attach it to your PC's IDE cable. (Keeping the drive powered by the Xbox during the process.) The PC side will be running a Linux based self-booting Live CD that copies the necessary files across. This is the only way to get at the files on the Xbox HD unless the drive is permanently unlocked; something you can usually only do with a chip. It's never sounded very safe to me.

Hmm. Thanks !

TBH I'm not really worried about the Xbox, more the PC lol.

How do you get stuff onto it once it's been modded? is it a case of copying from a DVDR or CDR? or do you need to keep taking it apart?

I have a TOSEC of snes roms, and getting the megadrive stuff isn't too hard..

After you've modded it, you can either copy stuff from USB 1 FAT drives. (If you have the correct cable for plugging it into the controller socket)

Or you can log into the Xbox through FTP and fiddle around with the files as if you were updating a website.

Hmm. So if (let's say) you were modding the xbox for me all you would need is the hard drive out of it?

Or would you need the whole unit?

A hard drive is mailable back and forth. LOL.

Sure, you could mail just the hard drive, if you had some way of keeping it powered the whole way.

The encryption key is stored in the Xbox itself: when you boot the Xbox, it uses its own key to unlock the drive. It's unlocked until it's powered off again, that's how the hotswapping works.

You'd really need to send the whole Xbox.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention above, yeah you can read from CDs and DVDs. Depending on what optical drive you have.

Argh bugger. Just realised my pc's motherboards (both pcs) only have one IDE channel 'cos theyre both SATA.

That screws that then :(

I might have to send it off somewhere then. Bugger :(

The alternative is you 'borrow' the equipment to do it - i did have everything but dont know where my memory card is.

Basically you need :

A copy of an exploitable game (i used splinter cell)
A custom memory card

When you have that you just boot the game , select the special save and your off , once the box is hacked you can FTP to it to save out the xbox 'key' and everything else you dont even need to open the box.

To make the custom memory card you either need a box which is already hacked or a memory card which takes SD cards (or similar) so you can dump the files on from your PC

Or you can just use an Action Replay memory unit that goes straight into the controller. Like this sort of thing:

Or, you take a controller apart instead of the box, and solder a USB socket to the controller's memory port, as they are just bespoke USB connectors, like so:
Attachment:
Image016.jpg

Than you can just use a USB stick. I will post more pics if you are interested in the pin layout, etc, but you will have to wait until I get home.

I've got loads of people interested so you'll have to move quickly on this.

I'm good man :) thanks though.

Someone's sending me one and I just realised I have a SATA cd rom so I'm going to have a go myself.

I've got a TOSEC of snes, MD and PCE roms.

mm, PCE.

But if you hack it then you lose the online part of SFIV which is a big part of the game

The 360 is not hacked in any meaningful way so there is no homebrew for it , the only reason for hacking it is to play pirated copies of games - i know you have another thread for a old xbox and thats your best option for SNES/Neo etc as those play just about perfect on an original xbox.

Cheers Mike !

Someone's donating me an XB and I think I can softmod it with what I have here.

I have two options.. Boot from my SATA dvd drive with the cd mod or connect the drive before post by using pausebreak and then use 360explorer.exe to perform the mod.

All I need to know now is if it's possible to boot windows from SATA and use the IDE. All three of the PCs in the house are 4 SATA 1 IDE.

If I can (or do the cd method using a sata dvd drive) then I should be good to go :)

I've got all of the files I need now and I just got done reading a guide on FTPing to the XB so I should be golden :)

Or you could flash the TSOP. That's how I used to do the ones I did, and I think it's less fucking about than this softmod malarky. I could do a v1.1-v1.6 Xbox in about ten minutes, slightly longer for a v1.0 because you had to pull the motherboard out.

I did cheers !

I'm longing for some sit in front of the telly hot SNES MD and NEO action though.

A couple of summers ago I broke my kneecap in two and had a immobilizer on my leg. I just sat around all day playing theme park on the MD (on my ps2's hddloader).

Awesome fun.

I've not ruled out a 360, but right now I fancy some old skool baseball stars 2 fun.

You use conductive paint to bridge 2-3 points on the Xbox's motherboard. Insert 007: Agent Under Fire and memory card with Special Save Game. Boot game, load save, XBox resets to a black screen. At this point it's running Linux and is active on 192.168.0.summat. Telnet in from any other machine on the LAN and run a command line command to reflash the BIOS. It's now permanently hacked.

Reboot the Xbox, throw in the Firefuckers DVD-R. From here you can either use that DVDR to install a dashboard, or you can FTP to it from your PC and install any software of your choice.

I've done over a hundred of these over the years, from way back before softmodding was possible.

It sucks Zaphod has lost some of the bits needed tbh. I'm only a 20 mins train journey from where he is.. (if he's still there that is).

If I can do this with a SATA single IDE pc I should be OK. I much like the sound of using a GUI in windows (360explorer.exe) to replace the OS and dashboard.. Plus I have all the stuff i need here.

Thanks for sorting out the messy threads doods !

OK my next question.

I've poked through the Xbox stuff I'm going to be dumping on the drive (backing up the old partitions first) and have noticed this.

Image

Which is in a folder on partition 4 called "games"

Now. I'm assuming that XB media player and the dvd player are what they say on the tin. and the NES emu is an emu with all the roms built in.

So, some questions.

1. How do I launch this stuff when in the new dashboard? is it all simples point and clicky stuff?
2. What do I need to do with my snes roms to make them work in a XB emu? do I need to create some kind of iso with the roms and EXE wrapped and then dump that into this game folder?

I assume that wrapping roms and some kind of exe would be pretty uniform no matter what emu you use yes?

In which case it could be very similar to the ISO's I used to have to create with emus and roms wrapped on my PS2's HDDLOADER.

I tried to unrar that NES emu to see what's inside but winrar can't open it. So I assume it's some kind of proprietory Xbox app that compiles it all together?

Nevermind. Seems it's loads more simple than the PS2. You just dump the roms in the relevant folder and shift the bugger to the XB's hdd.

By 'a lot less fucking about', you mean 'mostly the same'.

By 'mostly the same' you mean, 'more fucking about'.
