I've started dabbling with the iPhone SDK, and have run into a few stumbling blocks. The first is that I don't actually know the Objective-C language ;) despite having a book that tells me all I need to know about "Beginning iPhone Development" it doesn't actually cover Objective-C.

So I've just had to order another book to teach me that :P

For the first app. I've decided to do a shopping list application. Not one like all the others on there, the one I'm doing will have almost no market value at all as it'll be highly customised to the weekly shopping trip I make with my Mum, but as a learning exercise hopefully it'll be invaluable.

If I have two different forms on the app, one for the list itself and another for adding items, do I need three "UIView" controls (one for each form, and then a controller to switch between them) or will one each for the forms do the job, and then I use a Toolbar on each to flick between them?

//edit: I keep hitting Submit early, gnnnngh.

Are you on Twitter, Gaz? One of my followers @stuartsharpe is an iPhone dev. He might be able to help with any questions you have.

You don't technically even need a mac to be honest - the devkit will work on a low-end netbook with Leopard on it - I think that's what Gaz uses, and I have one too although I've been using it on the iMac so far.

I was going to have a crack at doing some stuff for the iPhone - does the SDK only run on a Mac?

It only runs on Leopard, yes.

Or, err, get a Mac or run a Hackintosh, I suppose.

Correct, I'm running Leopard 10.5 on my Acer Aspire One netbook. Although I'm thinking of getting a mac mini as typing for long periods on the netbook's keyboard is wearing a bit thin.

Yes :) by the time you've got it plugged into a big external monitor, with a proper mouse and keyboard attached, it's sort of defeating the point a bit..

Ah, sorry :( Still though, a second hand mac or 't0shable Dell or something might be a reasonable investment if you've got a good idea for an app, and are going to have some free time on your hands...

Well, hopefully not; I am jobhunting for great justice.

I really want a Mac. Have done for a while. Can't afford one, mind; they're so very expensive. Maybe one day.

I used to be a huge Mac evangelist until building my own PC a year or so ago because I fancied a pet project. I haven't fired up my one remaining Mac (a PowerBook G4) since really.

Sorry to hijack the thread slightly - but how easy/difficult is it to install OS X on an Acer Aspire One? I tried it once about 6 months ago without much success.

It took a couple of tries and a good few hours, and to get Wi-Fi working I had to order a replacement WLAN card and take the computer apart to install it, but other than that it didn't take that much effort at all.

I've discussed it on this site before, along with a link to the guide I followed.

I'd send it to me if I were you. Macs are rubbish.

Yeah, the default WLAN Card in the AAO is some "Atheros" jobbie, had to get a Dell 1395 WLAN card which OS X supports natively.
