Hoped this day would never come after many years of tip-top compy condition amid my tender, loving, careful care...

A virus seems to have slipped past AVG and got into me innards. I think it may have happened when I was searching for Tetris Pro downloads, and probably clicked something dodgy. My 'Task Manager Has Been Disabled by Administrator', I caught a Trojan Horse on startup, my computer's slowed a bit and AVG refuses to work properly, taking an age to scan about so far nine files. Downloading 'Avast' to see if that'll cure it. :(

Still unable to actually stop AVG scan, it keeps saying 'Another Operation is in Progress' when I try to shut it down. 8)

Any tips? :'(

Are you running in safe mode (press f8 during start up)?

Do all this shit in safe mode, pref. without networking. I always have a *buntu dual-boot using wubi for such instances, also.

Well in the end I installed avast, restarted computer, did a virus check at boot and healed what could be healed, deleted what had to be deleted. Around five or six infected files found, including in Windows. Got my work saved on USB anyway. Hope that fixed it, remains to be seen though.

Last time a friend-of-a-friend was having virus trouble I found Trinity Rescue Kit to be pretty useful.

I would also use Malwarebytes to do a quick scan

Thought I fixed the problem with Avast and Spybot, but it keeps coming back somehow. Fuckers. I get it deleted and then loads of MSDos boxes suddenly pop up and there it is, back on my system. It's connected to Win32. Extra laffs in that I can't just format the drive and reinstall because... *whisper it*... my Win XP isn't licensed. I got my compy off a mate a long time ago and he made a copy of XP for me. I'll try the apps you guys linked. Thanks for the help chaps!

At the very least, I'll have a shiny new compy by July though. Hurrah!

Make sure it's a Mac! The inner peace and tranquility of OS X is what you actually need.

run msconfig, you can usually see and untick a virus from there - google processes you are unsure of - and if you cant find out what it is -unticking it will stop it running on next reboot.

Cant recommend this program highly enough too:

http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-Hi ... 27353.html

This will permanently remove other virii too - but make sure you know what you are deleting - if unsure leave it.

with those 2 and spybot / AVG I've cleaned dozens of infected pcs. :)

Good luck!
