I think it if was free to play then I might give it a try - otherwise I'd feel that I had to play it for a certain amount each month so that I felt I was getting value for money. At the moment, I'd rather just dip into something like Diablo II as and when - and since I reinstalled that, I've played it maybe two or three times so I'm glad that's free.

(Ignoring the fact that my PC probably wouldn't run WoW anyway)

I played it for about three months a couple of years ago and did what I do with all MMO's play a few characters up to about 30th level and then start to think 'what are you doing with your life?' and give up (usually just before the 3 month sub option runs out). I enjoyed my time playing it but have no inclination to go back to it.

Dear Mr myp,

How many kinds of fun exist, and how do we differentiate between them? I quite like playing darts. is this "sports fun" or "other fun"?

I remain you faithful servant,

no. I have a friend that plays it since it was released and hasn't played anything else since. Just to think what great games (and our weekly football game) has he missed since then makes me not having any desire to play it. Besides, i think MMORPG's as a concept completely fail. What single-player RPG succeed is making you feel like an hero in believable world with blacksmiths, peasants, innkeepers and so on. Having something with thousands of people running around in a complete static world getting the same quest from the same NPC for the 10000th is beyond silly

Agree. In the Ultima games you are the mysterious 'Avatar' with a hidden destiny. In Deus Ex you are the mysterious JC Denton, and engineered super human with huge potential. In WOW you are n00bOwner1991 with the same powers and skills as the other 20 Million players. Yawn

Yeah, we decided that they were both equally fine for playing them on, if I remember.

WoW is fun if you know other people that play and they have similar gaming habits to you. In my case though, the friends I have that played it were willing to invest far more time in it than I was, so of course they leaped ahead of me in terms of levels and so on until there wasn't really any point in playing any more.

Something that WoW really does succeed at is the world itself. It's beautifully realised (even if the graphics are a little old now) and that first hypgryph trip from Theramore Isle to Auberdine, or from Menethil Harbor to Ironforge is really something. There are so many amazing sights in the game that half the fun is pure exploration - and the world itself is massive.

Personally though, I got bored of it long ago and haven't played it in well over a year now.

I played it for nearly three years. It has plenty of fun moments, and can be an absolute joy to play. But it does suck you in, and can start to take over your life if you give it any chance.

As with any MMO, it has players who take it very seriously; guilds who have application processes and a specific raid schedule, but there are plenty of friendly players and guilds out there who just play for fun, casually. I've been in both types, and the latter is a lot more enjoyable.

They're not for everybody.

This is why I stopped playing Too Human with Dimrill. :P

I love exploring game worlds. In fact, since I unlocked the second island in GTA4, I haven't done a single mission, just because I've been bumming around the place.

I reckon they should offer up a free access version of WOW for people to explore and poke around the world. Maybe those 'freebies' could take the place of NPC's.

BTW: I tried Second Life. Hated it. Bunch of wanky wish fulfillment.

I'd be amazed if there isn't a 'free' version for just that. Back in the day my younger brother used to play an awful lot of Ultima Online via some dodgy server so he didn't have to pay subscription costs.

I've been playing Forza recently as I've had my wheel set up, and I played Fifa and Guitar Hero because Joans was round.

I definitely want to carry on with TH, but I'd prefer it if you had a character that stayed around the same level as me so I didn't feel like you were carrying me through it.

It was (is) probably the easiest MMO to play and the character builder is an absolute joy. However once you've got to 25th level you've seen all the game has to offer. It was the MMO I played for the longest (about 6 months). I'm looking forward to see what they do with Champions Online.

It was quite good for the time I played it. Issue 5 had just come out when I decided to jack it in for good. It's now on Issue 14 or 15 IIRC. The badges system hooked me. It rewarded you for doing certain things with badges on your character. I got an Xbox and the achievements have done the same thing.

Actually, a hiking simulator MUMPYMUMPYRUG would be quite awesome. With achievements for finding hidden stuff, or a particularly good view.

I read what you wrote as 'A hitch-hiking simulator'. Presumably there would be rape-based achievements.

Yeah man, like, why all the hating and fighting? A nice, peaceful game of exploration would be most triumphant. Man.

Actually, wasn't there an 'explore the ocean' game on the Wii? PRECEDENT!

You can always go for a hike in Operation Flashpoint - turn the draw distance up to high and there's some amazing scenery.

Failing that, Oblivion has some nice places to go walking, I walked up the coast north from Anvil and then crossed inland through the astonishing forest to Kvatch.

I've walked Oblivion's landscape for literally days. Too small and cluttered by fecking ruins and shit.
