Hi folks,

I'm on here and it is late, I know, and I will babble. I don't know what I am about to post, but I remeber talking about my grandad here before. Actually, I searched the term 'grandad' and I seem to have mentioned him a lot.

Anyway, I was told about half an hour ago that he passed away. He turned 99 a few weeks ago and was acebest, and there'll never be another person like him. It's been a horrid few months of troubles and worries for other reasons, but though those things worry my head and make me feel ll or sick in some ways, this squeezes my heart tight.

We had a nice 99th birthday party for him a few weeks ago. He became jaundiced two weeks ago, was taken to hospital, they thought it might be cancer, and tonight he has gone. I am glad it was not painful or too drawn out, but now it seems so quick from smiling and celebrating to no longer being with us. I know he was 99, but in the most childish way I have never been able to imagine life without him being around, and I still can't. I don't know if it has sunk in yet.

I don't know why I must tell people how much I loved him, but I wanted to just to put it down.

Anyway, this picture is from a year ago - look how wonderful he is. You can tell by his smile, can't you?
Image

I'm going to try and go to bed. Anyway, I hope everyone is doing ok. Be good.

Oh Mimi... all my grandparents had died before my 5th birthday, so I can't honestly say I know what you're going through, but at the very least please accept my condolences.

Take care, eh?

Really sorry to hear this. My gran died in the summer and it was unexpected as well but I took a week off work and spent it with my cousins and that helped a lot. I'm not religious but she was and went to church nearly every day so it was nice when the priest described her as gods travel agent. I'm sure he's happy wherevere he is,it's just tough for the people who miss them :(

Really sorry to hear that Mimi. :( You've spoken very highly of your Granddad in the past so I know it must be hard - I'm envious in that I was never really close to any of my grandparents.

I love photos like that though - his smile really comes through the picture :)

One of the most beautiful and eye opening things I ever saw was when my Grandad came to visit my Grandma in hospital. He was quite infirm, mainly wheelchair bound but when he was brought to the bedside he painstakingly lifted himself up from his chair, leant over and kissed his wife. He didn't kiss my Grandma, he didn't kiss an old woman, he kissed the woman he had loved for decades.

She died not long after and he died about 18 months later but that image will stay with me forever.

My condolences Mimi, sounds like you have some great memories to keep him alive.

I'm thinking of you Mimi. My nan died on Christmas eve and, although it was quick and painless for her, it still hit me like a ton of bricks.

My thoughts are with you. x

Really sorry to hear this, Mimi; hope you're coping well. I also hope you take solace in the fact that he lived to 99, though! That's the age that people live to in the future. Space! And you really can tell that he was a super-chuffed awesome bloke just from that picture. :luv:

Sorry to hear your sad news Mimi. It's the worst thing ever to lose a loved one, and your Grandad obviously meant the world to you. Hope talking about him here helps you in some way. He looks like a splendid chap and I can't believe he was 98 in that photo.

Best wishes and glomps to you and your family.

Thanks guys. Sorry for the daft thread, it was late and my head was just full of sorrow, and probably not making much more sense now as I didn't sleep really, but feel a bit calmer, maybe sadder though, not sure, but thankyou for your thoughts and regards.

@Zardoz - He always looked young for his age. I am hoping this is in the genes.

Been wondering where you've been for a while now. I know you have quiet spells, so assumed you were just having a break. The circumstances are bad but It's great to have you back.

Really sorry to hear about your grandad Mimi. I lost mine on my dad's side a year and a half ago. He was the cleverest man I'd ever known and had the most beautiful voice - sort of like a more lilting Gandalf's. I can't see the photo in work of your grandad, but he sounded like a lovely soul. And I'm impressed by the life he must have led in those ninety nine years. The things he must have seen!

Lots of love to you, and hope you and your family find things to smile about in this difficult time. Hugs. :luv:

Sorry, Mimi. My grandmother passed just before Xmas this year, I don't know how but through the entire service my entire family and I managed to keep it all together. And I always raise a glass every Hallowe'en to my other grandmother who passed away that day in 1994 after a heartbreaking bout with lung cancer.

I'm sure he misses you too, but doesn't want you to be sad - think of the good times.

Thanks guys,

Your thoughts are all thankfully received.

Everything is OK, actually - I think I am coping strangely well. I feel 'normal' most of the time (no more happy/sad than a normal day), which is strange because I am a little emotional by nature, but apart from when I had the phone call to say he had passed, I have been OK. In quiet moments, if I think about how I'll never be able to see him smile again, I feel an emptiness, but apart from that, but apart from that I have been OK. A slight wibble about whether my hair was going to be a state for the funeral, now sorted, but apart from the the only upset I have felt is from the absolutely phenomenal nastiness from some members of 'the family' regarding the funeral, which just proves that families are crazy, but I put it down to the stress of the loss and so forgive them.

My nan is coping well, speaking to her makes me feel very settled, and between talking to her and Craig, I am just grateful that his passing was not painful or drawn out, and I know how lucky I was to have him around for such a great period of my life :)

The most important thing to my grandad was that I was happy, so this year I'm going to concentrate on being positive and on making the people that matter to me happy, too. Thankyou to everyone who passed on their thoughts, and to those who dropped me a PM (manly, manly macho men with a mean reputation, included).

Here's a funny tale about my grandad, to round of this rambling post:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
When I was about 13, I came home from school to find my grandad sitting outside the closed front door of our flat. In my memory he is eating a pasty, but grandad appears to be eating a pasty in most of my memories of him.

This is how he came to be sitting outside that door:

We lived on the first floor of a very small block of flats. My grandad had gone to the bathroom, which, for whatever reason, had not a standard bathroom lock, but a lock which you used with a key. The key was always on the inside of the bathroom (of course) apart from when my mother visited and bought the younger kids with her. My nan always locked the doors from the outside to stop the children 'getting into everything). My mother had, that day, popped by with my then four-year-old brother, so locked all of the doors from the outside.

Mother left, grandad used the bathroom without moving the key to the inside, and for whatever reason, Nan had turned the key and locked him in.

Nan (as deaf as a post) then put the TV to it's usual ear-splitting volume and settled down to a few hours of mind-numbing daytime TV, 1990's style, Grandad still in bathroom.

Grandad, not being one to do what most people would do in this situation (someone - either my Nan or me returning from school will have to used the bathroom sooner or later... just wait for them to do so) he decided to climb out of the tiny bathroom window, down the drainpipe alongside the window, and back into the block of flats, whereupon he rang the doorbell and pounded on the door, only to be still drowned out by Changing Rooms, or whatever was on at the time.

This is probably when he went t buy a pasty and wait for my return.

OK, it's not an amazing story, but I was 13 at the time, which would have made him at the time... 81 or 82.

So, a man in his 80's, who would chose to shimmy down a drainpipe rather than just wait for someone to let him out. Acebest, and a little bonkers. I have no idea how he managed to not break a leg or something worse :D
