I know Publisher is a hateful hateful package. However having forgotten this I've gone and designed a brochure in it.

I outputted it as a PDF, took it to the printers and they did a test print that had massive white edges on it. This is because I haven't included something called bleed. Well actually I had, but they screwed their faces up when I suggested they slightly zoomed in the PDF files I had with me.

So I need someway of getting the hateful Publisher to allow for bleed and allowing me to put crop marks on it. They helpfully suggested I use a page size slightly larger than A4 which is easier said than done.

After spending 2 days doing a brochure I'm not going to be beaten at this late stage. Anyone have any ideas how to get Publisher to play ball?

Could you not open it in some image software and do it that way?

Or would the quality be too low?

When I last did some printing this is exactly what I did and told the printer to sort it out by giving them massive edges. However that was for a 2 sided A5 leaflet (folded A4) so I was able to just send 2 PNG's. The complication this time that this is an 8 page A4 brochure that has a centre spread (because I thought I'd be a smartarse. The proof looks fab but has white edges all the way round.

I daresay that if the printers weren't cocks they could just zoom it. But I guess the problem is they have to spend their days dealing with morons like me. And their prices are good (a run of 50 brochures is nearly half the price of the other company in town and the samples are better quality).

Write a blog about it expressing your anger, but fail to resolve the issue at hand, as it's clearly someone else's fault.

Ah ah ah. Might have found something marked custom page size. But getting Cute PDF to output it might be another matter.

That second glass of wine may have to wait....

It is true that this is the formula for all good blogs, along with many Daily Mail opinion pieces.

No help to you but shared misery etc...

I've been wrestling with publisher for a few days myself, trying to produce an A3 poster. To check how it looks I flip to print preview. Now, you have to specify a printer to do a print preview, fair enough at work where I have an A3 colour laser, it looks fine. I bring it home to continue working and suddenly print preview only shows a quarter of the page. Grumble, groan.

:this: is pretty much my problem. Although can manually set the page size, but I am on 2002. I am experimenting now.

I've started using something called Scribus, which looks pretty in depth, and exports as PDF.

Haven't tried printing with it yet though. Still going through he tutorial.
