So, after almost an year, i'm back into a gym. Last Tuesday i went for some weight lifting, and even though i knew i couldn't push too hard, i couldn't avoid it. I have the worse muscle soreness i can remember.

Some people say i should keep exercising and the pain would go away, but for me that's the same solution has drinking alcohol while with hangover. Other's say i should rest to let the muscles develop. Is there anyone here doing weight lifting who can offer me their insight?

Anyway, i have to return there tomorrow, because i'm paying for 2x a week

Don't do all the muscle groups every time. Pick a group of muscles each session and concentrate on them.
Do sets of reps, then take a break. Stick to your planned reps.
Lots of water.
Don't skip sessions.

Also, go three times a week if you can, not twice.

Eat plenty of protein, take vitamins.

yes, that's what i did in my hometown, but gyms in Lisbon are bloody expensive. I don't have the option of going 3 times. It's either 2 for 50€ or free pass for 80€

Muscle ache is caused by the tearing of the muscle fibre from over exercise - this is a necessary cause and effect in building/developing muscle. It'll obviously be worse because of a lengthy period away from the gym.

Unless it hurts (and I mean really hurts) after 3 days, I'd go back to the gym. The pain is muscle growth.

It'll pass. It normally takes 72hrs for a muscle to recover from complete exhaustion from exercise - use your brain and work out your muscle groups and exercise regime from that.

You've got DOMS man http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_onset_muscle_soreness

It always hurts like a bastard when you come back to it after a while. Walking like you've shit yourself after squats is probably the worst side effect.

I have a thing called a "fig rig". One of these:

Image

When I had it new I used it at an event for about an hour solid. Arms were tired afterwards but thought nothing of it.

Then in the middle of the night I woke up because my arms felt like they were on fire. So much pain! Took days to go away totally.

I now use the Fig Rig more sparingly. But it shows how easy it is to strain muscles without even knowing it (holding a Fig Rig isn't a position you'd use in everyday use).

Take this on board.

And drink lots of water, breathe properly, and stretch a lot.
