Does anyone remember STAR FLEET? Shown on Going Live (I think) back in the early 80s, it was an impressive Japanese puppet show, dubbed really well into English, and comparable to the mighty TERRAHAWKS in sophistication.

It hasn't been repeated since then, and has been released on VHS once, but only in partial form. Luckily however, it was released in more complete form elsewhere, and it has been traded widely among collectors since the 80s. In the past few years in fact, some enterprising folks have been selling it in VCD format, to the many who want to be able to watch it, but couldn't.

It is seriously one of the best TV shows that I have seen and still holds up well today, even in flicker-vision, thanks to a decent budget, decent plots, and some fun 'Let's use our OTHER secret weapon!' Japanese style action.

I have a copy. My copy is from VHS, and the sound is out of sync on a couple of episodes - you can either adjust this yourself, or swear at me for not doing it for you, or ignore it, or skip it, or give up. You have a choice. You always have a choice.

You could choose to PM me, if you fancy watching Star Fleet and we can arrange to watch it around my house one night or something.

So, yeah, if you fancy coming around here and watching my copy, then I suggest you PM me. Because that's what this thread and this post are about. PMing me. To arrange to come around to my house. To watch STAR FLEET. All 2+ gigs of it. Via PM. At www .torr('Snip!')

Star Fleet was super awesome. Did they have ships that formed together to make a giant robot, and someone on a sailboat that sailed through space?

Yes! You can come around to my house RIGHT NOW if you PM me, and everything.

You're forgetting however the X-Bomber itself, which looks a bit like an X-Wing but kicks way more ass.

I had a Star Fleet jigsaw, with the three baddies on it. It was ace.

I remember the X-Bomber - couldn't it lift up its "neck" to shoot a secret laser, or shoot a big X when the first secret laser wasn't secret enough?

I also seem to vaguely recall the theme tune going something like "Staaar Fleeeet! Do-do-do-do dooo dooooo!" or similar. Spangles, eh?

Hint: if you were to PM me, you could come around my house and watch it and relive the magic! Remember the theme song, and all that sort of stuff! You know... with moving pictures and stuff. It's awesome.

Rodafowa: The X-Bomber had at least two special secret final weapons. As did the big robot. Which was the big secret final weapon of the ships. Which themselves were a secret of the ship. Which was a secret of Earth - look, everyone just PM me already, for chrissakes.

It's not, as the upcoming DVD release is currently vapourware and my mate at (one of the Starfleet fan sites) has been telling me of the slightly dubious nature of things. The release date is supposedly a complete invention, picked only because it was 'the middle of the year' and so long enough to 'do it in time'. This could change, but I've been confidently told 'Don't hold your breath'.

Well HMV were pimping it in their email at the weekend so they must be fairly sure it's on the way

HMV have been given an 'exclusive' on it. The release dates are projections - it's to go 'OMG YOU CAN BUY STAR FLEET THIS YEAR!!!! FROM US!! FOR MONEY!!'. I'm not saying it won't come out on the 30th of June, and obviously when it does it will be a better copy, supposedly remastered, hopefully with goodies. I'll be buying it for sure. I'm just saying that from what I've heard, it probably won't come out then after all. And in the mean time, given that it's such a great show, I suggest that folks at least 'see what the fuss is about' by coming over to my house.

Star Fleet is all manner of wonderfulness. There's death and spooky ghost ships and stuff! Amazing. I'd like to see a subtitled Japanese version though..

Okay who else still has the Star Fleet annual 1985?

I think I might have had a Star Fleet annual, but I wouldn't know where to look for it now.
I remember when I first discovered the internet, trying to search for Star Fleet would just bring up countless pages about Star Trek, and I had no idea it had been called X-Bomber in France or wherever it was, nor could I remember any of the names.
Eventually I did find a site where I could send someone a tenner (I think) and they would send me an 8 cd set ripped from the US videos. :attitude:

It would be good if it came out on DVD, but last time I paid any attention nobody seemed to have any idea of who owned the rights to it, so in the meantime I'd have to recommend you all go over to CUS's house to watch it.

:this: +10 CUS points to Joans. Including the difficulty in finding stuff out on it (bloody Star Trek!). It's typical that I'd find it on a long-lost drive*, in the same year that it (hopefully, possibly, but not assuredly) comes out on DVD at last.

* My sister's wardrobe, inside a box of old kids' videos, for reasons none of us can fathom.

Watching this currently, I recommend that when people are over at my house, they watch the lip-synching. Considering that the footage was all imported from Japan complete, the attention to detail in the dubbing really is quite special. Especially for something from 1982 or so.

Are those points actually worth anything?

After a bit of nosing around it seems that hmv have bought the release date on their site forwards from August, and it's also on Play and Amazon for the same date, so who knows?

Getting kind of tempted to pre-order now... :S

Oh, I'll be buying it when it does come out for sure, I'm just not going to pre-order for my own reasons. Go ahead if you want - unless the price difference is bad, I recommend doing it from HMV in this instance.

Whether or not CUS points are worth anything may depend on if you are a brunette or redhead female with green eyes and a filthy mind. Otherwise, 100 nets you a very tasteful carriage clock.

I could cry - seeing that video, certain shots are making me wonder how I ever managed to forget this wonderful show. I FUCKING LOVED IT back in the day but it has gone from my mind completely until now. So there's really no torrents of this?

Reminds me of the time a few years back where someone gave me their collection of Gatchaman and western derivative videos. I regressed to six instantly, and for about a month.

I'm afraid I'm not female, so I'll just have to keep saving for the carriage clock. Do I need to keep a record of how many points I have, or do you have some sort of system in place already?

As for the torrents, I seem to remember seeing a post on here linking to a torrentz search engine, however the name of the site and the person who posted it seem to have slipped my mind. :)

Just a reminder that My House won't have its door open for folks to see Star Fleet forever, so if you want to see Star Fleet*, you'll need to PM before the weekend is over, because that's when the door shuts again...

* Before the DVD release which I am still told is 'doubtfully' the 30th of June. But could be! Hopefully!

Also - because I've just had someone PM to ask me about this - as folks have noticed whilst watching it at my house, the audio is out of sync on several episodes, in the 'middle' of the series. I know, and the reason I haven't fixed this is because

a) I'm a very lazy man.
b) In mind of the DVD's eventual release, I didn't want to exactly be tarting up the files I had. And because I just used the Audio Delay shortcuts in VLC to compensate.

This said, if anyone else has found this to be a stumbling block, then PM me, and maybe I can do something about it possibly.

edit: if you know how, then when you hit the glitch (about 16 minutes into episode 7), you need to delay the audio by 2400ms.

Does that mean I can join in this fun?

So, I'll drag this one from the death to point out that it's nearly the 30th of June, and unfortunately it looks like CUS was right, as the release date has now moved out to September 1st.
Possibly you can still go to CUS' house to see it, but he's probably out of jelly and ice cream.
