I'll start off:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7996187.stm

Wherein the headline is undermined by the content of the article - 55% of the 200 interviewed (didn't think I could remember putting my name to this one, or any survey ever, really) believe in heaven (what percent can explain what it's like then, or why they believe in it?) whilst just 16 percent less believe in ghosts. So there we've got a country that generally tends to believe in invisible things that lack evidence based on how hard they have it shoved down their throats in school.

What makes me happy though is this - two percent fewer people believe in life after death than heaven - so two percent either believe in hell but not heaven (probably been to Merthyr), or they believe heaven exists but we just never get there because when we are dead we are just dead. God sat there in his robe looking bored and flicking serphim off clouds because no-one made it to the party.

I'd like to meet someone from this 2%

Let's try and all come up with another piece of evidence for Spacky Britain in our replies, to keep the thread interesting. Ought not to be too difficult.

Try to post newfound spackiness!

Can't ut a price on the new album? How about a tenner for 8 gigs of backup storage on your keyring?

I don't think they qualify, really. It's only property for sale, and not selling, with 2 exceptions, for the most part, and the sun ran the same story about 2 months back.

Been looking at that first link

That 2% is clearly due to the really rather small sample size of 200 which makes any real deduction meaningless. That and the nature of the questions, which as not stated could have been leading.

Because the survey was done by Theos who descibe them selves as:
Quote:
A public theology think tank providing alternative perspectives to secular culture and public opinion
so are pinning what they hope this survey will show from the start.

In addition, on their page about their research into darwin they talk about their report on Darwin, half of which was on why Evolution is compatible with Christianity (which it clearly obviously is) but the other half was about ID and creationism in what, from a cursory look, appears to be designed to pretend their is a debate.

Nevertheless those statistics are brilliant for atheist/rationlists/humanists etc. This and their other works puts non-believers at about 47% which puts us as one of the highest in the world. It also makes non-believers a huge faction.

It also shows that nonsense like astrology and so on has fallen since the 90s, where it saw a rise when people lost faith in organised religion but looked for replacements.

So not at all spacky in my eyes.

EDIT: A further look at theos and I quite like them. The release pdfs of their reports and they are licensed to a creative commons license. Good stuff.

Calvin has revealed that it was just a lie to cover up the fact that he hasn't made a new album yet. On popjustice.

So Christians (of which I am one of several on this board) are all "spacky", are they?

I'm usually susceptible to Christanity after reading awesome things by awesome Christians, like G.K Chesterton. Then I meet an actual Christian, and am less enamoured.

Actual Christians, talking fucking shit.

Not all are spacky, but these ones are. As are the ones today who we had to get the police to stop kidnapping my client so that Jesus could save him from addiction. I'd love to be able to talk about this, but I can't :(

How pathetic are these sorts of people, who get so offended at the idea of a fictional character dissing their religion?

Seriously... If you really believed even half of it, you would never be that touchy.

You have a point here. I don't ring up and complain every time Emily Bishop's talking about God on Corrie. That's because I don't watch it, but that's not the point.

Or is it? I'm confused.

Yarp, that's me point.

Problem being the Cult of Dawkins are probably gearing up to do just that in future, giving the three-pronged Cult of Abraham fruitcakes somehting to push against.

Except, 87.3% of the time, it doesn't.

From Clive Tyldesley covering the Man Utd/Everton game..

That was one of those decisions that could've gone either way, and it did.
