Isn't there an option to save as PDFs in Word?

Off the top of my head, openoffice can open your word docs and save them as .PDFs. What OS are you talking about?

Without wanting to sound like an arse, are you sure you want to? Lots of people want to use .PDFs for the wrong reason.
Simple question: Is this going to be printed out by a third party?

Word 2007 and 2003 both have a plugin downloadable from Microsoft.com that'll let you save as PDF, certainly.

Word, don't save easy for me
How can I find a way to make you save a PDF
Word don't save easy

Word, don't save easy save me
This is the only way for me to say hlp plz
Word don't save easy

Well I'm just a gayer man
MaliA's so far's my best friend
But my word is saving out wrong and I
I reveal my 'save as' menu to you and
Hope that you believe it's true cause

Word, don't save easy for me
How can I find a way to make you save a PDF
Word don't save easy

This is just a simple song
That I've made for you on my own
There's no hidden meaning you know when I
When I say I'm fucking clueless
Please believe I really am cause

Word, don't save easy to me...

PDfs are wonderful and brilliant and excellent on Linux and Mac and I forget how painful they can be on Windows.

Thinking that said third party cannot edit or copy stuff from the PDF. Or (CLIENTS OF MINE TAKE FUCKING NOTE) for sending images to be used on the Internet.

I know PDF's are editable, but i don't know better ways to protect something. But there isn't much problem as it's not business related. It's stuff to distribute to the students for the class i lecture.

Word has a built-in "protect" function. But then... If your students edit the document you've sent them, that makes them a little dim :)

true. I was checking that a while ago on Powerpoint and it doesn't have that. Just some online authentication shit and encription methods. Still searching for some simple "restrict edition and formatting". I thought Word was the same, but found how to do it

As an alternative, you can always install something like Bullzip which is free and gives you a PDF printer so anything you send to it will come out as a PDF.

I'm kinda surprised Microsoft hasn't just ripped off that element of Mac OS X, enabling you to print to PDF from any app. Mind you, maybe that's because Microsoft doesn't own PDF outright and would rather use its own tech all the time.

What's the precise arrangement around the format? Adobe clearly own it, and on Windows if you have Acrobat Writer you get PDF Distiller, which does indeed allow you to print to PDF from any app. That implies to me that you wouldn't be able to bundle the functionality without paying for it, which makes me wonder how Apple manage it.

They wanted a lightweight reader to be built into XP, but the antitrust hippies started to cry, so they had to leave it out. The same reason for not having a writer in Office by default (you have to install it from that there Internet).

I think that's more to do with the fact they don't want to pay Adobe any royalties and would rather push their dead-in-the-water XPS format instead.

Edit - http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/05/AR2006060501315.html

Adobe made them pull it.

Can you save to XPS without the downloaded plugin? The download is called SaveToPDFOrXPS.exe, which would imply you cannot.

Hrm, PDF is an ISO standard isn't it - I don't think Adobe monopolise the format..

Microsoft probably don't like it for exactly that reason, if it can't be monopolised.

[edit, oh, I guess this is wrong, reading the link above]

By the way, google docs also "saves as" PDF, if it's a word doc you may be able to use that without installing anything.

PDF is freely implementable, without licence or patents required. Adobe probably feared Microsoft's usual Embrace/Extend/Extinguish pattern. It's telling Microsoft gave into Adobe's sabre rattling and dropped the feature instead of going to court.

That article posted by Gaywood seems to strongly indicate that Adobe stepped on the ability for native PDF in XP/Vista.

No, that's PDF export from Office 2007, not anything at the OS level (although the same arguments apply there, of course).

Yes, true - although it says that Adobe asked them to remove inbuilt support for XPS from Vista - which is odd.

Well, if Adobe ask for pdf to be removed, they won't want people using the ms alternative will they?

I can't see how they legally have a leg to stand on though. They can't accuse MS of antitrust whilst at the same time increasing their stranglehold over the format. Not with a straight face, at least.

Apparently, Office 2007 SP 2 includes the ability to save as PDF and (very surprisingly) ODF natively now. ODF is the format Open Office uses by default.

On a vaguely related note, I'm developing an e-commerce website that will offer the sale of an information-based document. I would prefer that the purchaser could not edit the document, though that is not hugely important, but it's got to be accessible to the majority of people.

Can anyone comment on whether PDF is the preferred format for such a document?

To be honest, if you give someone a document in any format, they can change it. On the surface PDFs have protection against this, but it's pretty trivial. It may do a decent enough job for the majority of folks, and it's format-portable, so it's still a pretty good choice.

All the cool websites send out scrolls.

And when they print it, it makes all their pens go missing or not work? Actually, that would explain a lot.
