...and I'll be sorry to see him go.

New thread for a new year! And here to open it, a link to the first episode of Party Animals, which stars next Doctor Matt Smith. Comparing this to his performance in Secret Diary of a Naked Billie, I reckon he's got range, and yet there's obvious glances of what the next Doctor will be like. Still, he's played a shop assistant and a researcher quite differently, so a 900 year old alien should certainly be a catalyst to further ranginess and I think we are in for a surprise one way or another, though I anticipate a less than entirely glorious 'settling in' period.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... Episode_1/

I'm also watching back the series two repeats on iPlayer, other than 'Love and Monsters' because it sucks. I didn't like the series once it had finished though I enjoyed it well enough on the first run. I thought the following two had more going for them and remembered it as being good only for Rose bing in it. On second run-through, it's not bad at all, there's somehting to love most if not all episodes for.

Have we got a date for the first feature-length episode yet?

Waaah I'm going to miss David Tenant as the Doctor, for I love him and his over spitting when he gets over excited about stuff.

However, I am interested in seeing how Matt Smith plays the role. I fear I may not fancy him as much as David Tenant.

What? There's more to Doctor Who than the eye candy? Oh.

Darleks. Timelord. Regeneration. Handsome men... No!

Watch Andrea Riseborough in The Devil's Whore on C4 Catch-up online, then in Party Animals (opposite Matt Smith).

Now imagine her in something sexy, and tell me she's not Romana.

He might be making a Hamlet film this year, since he was injured for most of the RSC theatre tour. Eyes peeled, folks.

I thought it was great fun. Tennant is charisma personified, and Michelle Ryan is just hot.

Even Lee Evans wasn't bad!

Muchos fun. Looking forwards to the next one.

Yeah, it was very good indeed.

Props to Lee Evans, a perfect rendition of Dr Richard Gaywood there.

Plot -1
'Earth in Peril' yet again -1
Pointless officious bitch worshipping the doctor one minute then willing to fuck him up with very little information the next -1
Michelle Ryan in a figure hugging suit +50 in HD +100

I think that's the only DR Who episode I will ever need.

First 40 minutes were incredibly poor and dull while the last 20 minutes were fun in a rather mindless way. Nothing I'd want to see again mind you.

That was well over 80% shit annoying derivative over-emotive drivel, but still somehow watchable. How do they do it? More importantly, why?

LOL at the Gaywood character :D

Despite my impassioned defence of Red Dwarf in another thread, I say RTD can now fuck right off. He's clearly run out of ideas and has begun recycling. In fact, he started that a while back.

Yes. The setup with the laser-protected (except from above) holy grail thing being nicked right from under their noses was boringly routine.

The horde of metal flying things eating everything was straight out of "The Langoliers" (worst movie ever, by Stephen King) or a whole season of Lexx which had similar self-replicating thingies.

I almost turned off at the bit where the Doctor was getting to know the good, honest, normal London people from many backgrounds who will work together to triumph against alien adversity. How many times have we seen that now?

Wormhole? Yawnariffic. The faraday cage bit was vaguely reasonable, but then they had to spoil it with nonsensical rubbish about the bus engine seizing because it had apparently immediately ingested sand despite having only just got there, but emptying the air filter would solve that.. until it "ran out of petrol" because they kept "turning it over". The Doctor later lauds the genius involved with this as being "good with engines".

UNIT people showing up to wave guns at things and make the situation worse in the nick of time, check.

Irritating levels of product placement in it too - oyster cards and vodaphone FTW apparently.

The remaining good bits sort of made up for this - the Gaywood bloke and the hot flirty chick (who the doctor obviously can't take with him for now-boringly familiar reasons)

But why can't they do a show with 80% good bits and only 20% crap bits? Seems to be almost deliberately poorly written, which is a shame.

Kind of vaguely enjoyable but yes, RTD has run out of ideas completely. Completely.

And I still don't understand why the Doctor couldn't have phoned up Unit, said, "Hullo you, could you chuck a few metal crates on ropes through the wormhole? Ta."

Fling. Clamber in. Shut box. Pull rope. Get out. Fling box back through for the next person. Repeat. Close wormhole. Done.

Haha, I said to MsK as we were watching this "why doesn't the army chuck a winch rope through and tow the bus out?", to which the reply was "it's a wormhole, duh, they don't work like that" :D

Or at least, y'know, drive a bloody army truck through, and then back again, or whatever.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking along those lines. And yes, it was a phoned-in premise, let alone script. The specials are generally intended to be utter fluff, so I'm less bothered than if this had been a proper series episode.

I enjoyed it enough, but at several points during the last 15 minutes or so I considered going upstairs, booting up the PC, doing some research into Murray Gold's probable location, grabbing my rifle and then paying Mr. Gold a visit with the aforementioned rifle.

Well, finally watched it. Not out and out crap, but just depressingly mediocre. On the plus side, it did have Michelle Ryan in a catsuit.

Well I think he looks a scruffy bugger, plus obviously he's far too young looking and has rubbish hair. I've not been keen on him since he was introduced as the new Doctor. Still, as long as the stories are good, I can put up with a boy in the lead role.

I suppose that new bird's alright but I'm just hoping she can act.

You can't embed from that site. I've tried countless times!

But I know the scene you mean. Many Who fans are still annoyed that Planet Of Fire isn't out on DVD as they've worn out their VHS tapes at 16 minutes and 32 seconds.
