Yip - however remember the whole game is about 6 or 7 K in total.

If you can pass night patrol 8 it gives you a nice big bonus and goes back to the start

Yes , but only when they are on the ground - helicopters and tanks give you bonus points , shooting the two other bikes moves you to the next level.

Yes. But the Chinny top tip is don't let them distract you otherwise you'll end up eating tree. Just shoot them if they are easily got at.

Less than 6 hours to go on this one with points still up for grabs!

I tend to just hold down the fire button so if they happen to fly into the shot the great - otherwise i'm not really going out my way for them and only really go out to one side if the enemy bikes are there or i can see an easy shot for them

In 1957 the home computer was invented by Brian Blessed. But it took a man of genius to take this humble device and turn it into the ultimate home entertainment system.

That man was Alan Sugar, who invented the GX4000 the worlds most successful games console. Now, 19 years on, we look back in amazement at how the Amstrad empire has conquered the world.

But now lets look back at one of the consoles most challanging yet polished games. Navy Seals from Ocean. 6 years in development and with a multi million pound budget, this awesome game is the subject of this weeks 8 Bit Challenge:

Download the cartridge ROM:

http://tacgr.emuunlim.com/downloads/filedetail.php?recid=2365

And an emulator should you need it.

http://www.winape.net/

We all await your scores. Good luck and may Sir Alan be with you.

Man, I've plugged it loads all week because I was so surprised there was so little interest. IIRC it came out top and yet no fucker played it.

Go on, give Navy Seals a blast. Lose your GX4000 virginity. Sir Alan is very gentle.....

I've got a boxed GX4000 somewhere actually. I've only ever played Burnin' Rubber on it though which is a poor man's Wec le Mans. I did have quite a few other games but they always sold very quickly and they've become bloody expensive to replace.

I binned all my GX4000 games and my copy of Lemmings for the Lynx. All worth a fortune now. In fact the copies of Pang and Navy Seals on all the sites are copies of my ROM's! I sent them off to some bloke who copied them. I only found out recently that they don't have a safe way to copy ROM's which is why Chase HQ 2 hasn't been uploaded!

Burnin' Rubber is far better than WEC Le Mans though. I had both and I'd take Burnin' Rubber any day! Larger screen, more colours, better tracks and far more polish. And driving through the night is a real wow!

Colours? I was a spectrum owner - we didn't need more than two or three.

Nearly completed level 1. Had just enough time but critically couldn't find the final device to activate it.

It's such a bitch of a game. Timing is everything and the limits are so tight. But it's a game I have no qualms playing over and over again (I must have just played it 5 times in a row).

ARRRGGHHH.

I reached level 2 for the first time ever. In fact I completed level 1 with 40 seconds to spare resulting in a big bonus.

So I start to play level 2. However when you lose your final life it gives you a "continue" which resets your score. I accidently pressed fire and of course it let me continue but I never got my high score.

I'd got 9300, but the only proof I have is the high score table proving I reached level 2 (the high score table operates an odd system where a higher level achieved will trump a higher score from a lower level hence why my initial high score has been booted off).

I'll let you lot decide on if I can have it my 9300 or not:

Level 2 looks like a total bitch btw. Just instant death in all directions.

I dont mind it standing - however since there are still days of the challenge left I expect you to beat that score so it wont actually matter :-)

Hooray!

Level 2 is a bitch however. A real bitch, I just can't see me getting far. Instant death in every direction and the enemies have good lines of sight.

I'd play this if you'd chosen the Speccy version. There's no way I'm sullying my machine with a GX4000 Emu though.

The emulator is simply available via the downlaods link on the left hand side on the Winape site.

http://www.winape.net/download/WinAPE20A17.zip

However the CPC games site appears to be down. Luckily I know the location of the back end (as in the old days it is all we had):

ftp://ftp.nvg.unit.no/pub/cpc/games/cartridg/

Scroll down and Navy Seals is there.

No need. The standard CPC emulator will have you covered.

And no complaining, you lot voted for these games.

Sorry, how do I assign keys in the emulator?

Edit: maybe a more pertinent question would be, what is fire? and the corresponding, up, down, left, right would be good.

I'll check that in a mo but I find that incredibly hard to believe. Whatever Mac CPC emu I use loads carts and the original Arnold was written by the guy who borrowed my original carts to copy!

So you're all playing my copy of Navy Seals! CHINNYTRUFAX!

I'll check when I get home in a bit.

Select "open".

Then you will see a box labelled "type" which will be indicating "Disc Drive A". Change that to cartridge et voila!

Don't ask me how to redefine the controls though as I can't find that either. I think they've mapped the joystick to the numeric keypad that isn't on my Macbook. It's rather a poor port of the PC version.

I have managed to get in, but the controls are weird. I can't shoot up at an angle and I can only sometimes climb over boxes. Also, is there a jump? I seem to remember there being one? I think I may have screwed up the buttons, but it is a very strange mapping system. :S

I have sorted it! actually makes sense once you figure it out. :)

To redefine the controls, go to setting, input. there is a keyboard. select the key on the keyboard using the mouse, the push the key on your keyboard you want to be that key int he game. On the RHS of the CPC keyboard is an arrows and stuff, these are the mapped keys, so if you click the left arrow and press 'Z', then Z is the left key.

Ah, thanks Chinny. Works A-OK now.

Yes, the Bannister.org emulators are rather... Poorly featured.

The GX4000 had two fire buttons. Fire is on 1, jump on 2. You'll need to check your mappings.

You need to get to grips with jumping and firing to do well. Easy when you get the hang of it. However you need to get your timing dead on.

Spoke to the author on email. His solution is that I should use a USB gamepad. I resisted the temptation to suggest he should get to (clucking cluck - Ed).

I have asked why the option to map the joystick to keyboard fails. I fully expect to be told that to solve this I need to build a small windmill in my garden.

I know people do these things for free but why (a) bodge a port of a decent emulator and (b) angle the entire thing so you have to add a shareware bolt-on to add functionality that the likes of Winape offer for free.

Hmmmm.

I am using the version of Winape you linked to above, on a PC and you can map the joystick to the keyboard. The timing, as you say, is pretty difficult.

Ah. Winape is great.

The person behind the Mac conversion of Arnold says he will look into the joystick mapping error.

A bit unfair. There is no instant death traps and stuff. You do need to keep an eye out for the baddies but they only shoot if you are in their line of sight. Timing is key and life is far easier if you have the better weapons (break open certain crates for machine guns, flame throwers, etc).

Work the level anti clockwise, but be sure to take out the guy on the second platform above you at the start. Otherwise you'll have the clock ticking down and you need to get past him to activate the last bomb (do the one on the top left of the level above your start position last).

Remember you can also jump on baddies and kill them without losing energy and that baddies can also hear you if you are very close and will start to shoot.

The game is very fair when you get to know it, but you have to get your timings and jumping technique spot on. As I found out (for the first time ever) if you tackle level 1 in the right way the time limit is actually quite generous!

Sorry, I just meant it was a bit of a steep learning curve, there seem to be parts where if you don't edge along cautiously, or keep firing as you move, you find yourself getting shot with no way to avoid it (until you know it's coming next time).

Anyway, last go for a bit. 1250

There is a touch of that. You do need to edge your way through each level. If you just run manically about you'll be shot in no time.

I just got 2050, but then I got so annoyed with it I closed it without a screen grab. I am sure I will get it again!

You can have it.

And you'll do better. Navy Seals has this odd quality where you do keep on going back to it. Joans must be pretty close to getting off level 1 I reckon.
