at least according to the PC Gaming Alliance

Hmm.. I don't know many folk that use their PC for gaming (except some of you weirdos, obviously) but I know a hell of a lot more with consoles.

The bellend, Paul Carr, uses a PC for games.

Heh.. lock it if you like - I'm neither for or against any format. Just thought it was amusing that they made the front page of the BBC site with this story.

I'm not locking it; I'll just have to sternly talk to people in blue if it turns into a PC vs Console war again.

The PC Gaming Alliance does sound like some kind of quango, though. Surely it's just MMOs that are keeping the PC gaming numbers looking healthy?

I do wonder if they're counting people playing flash games or solitaire as gaming too. If it was such a strong format, then you'd expect there to be more PC games on shelves.

I bought Fallout 2 from GOG last year and I've still barely played it as I'd much rather laze on the sofa with a controller than be sat at my PC - I do that all day as it is.

Actually could we maybe keep this as the official l
PCs vs consoles thread and stop it being discussed anywhere else?

They probably are counting flash games etc, yes. Peggle, Bookworm, Zuma, etc. If you do PC gaming volume is huge compared to consoles. It's not necessarily wrong to do so, but it's not a fair comparison really; it's a different market.

If they are going to include all those things, I would think mobile phone gaming would be pretty high, and rather strangely, possibly a better comparison?

I'd be curious to see if XBLA/Wiiware/Virtual Console/Er.. whatever it's called on the PS3 has eaten into the PC market of 'casual' games.

I don't think XBLAH etc has dented this market. No-one buys a console for casual games, they're just a side-order. There are probably more PCs in this country than there are 360s worldwide, and that's the huge, huge potential market that Popcap and others are addressing. Consoles will never sell on anything like that scale.

Hmm. Probably not. Mobile gaming is a nightmare for developers, see, as there is no single unified platform. Best thing you can do is write it in Java, but you'll still have to test on dozens of device and accomodate different screen resolutions etc in a way that is really fiddly to do. This is the main reason mobile gaming never really took off I think; it's just too much work. It's also why devs are so excited about the iPhone, where you write and test your game once, and it can ship to 30million devices immediately.

I bet you can't buy a PC for as little as an 360 but I cant post here on a 360 or upgrade it but then thats the beauty I suppose it just works (like a Mac lol) apart from the RRoD but thats covered by Micro$orft but you should be able to repair it yourself to save time as it takes ages to send it off to Germany and back so you go out and buy another in an ideal world.

I was more saying that there are loads of mobile phones out there, all with games on. If they are counting flash games, etc then a comparison between those and mobile games can be made.

To address you point further though, with there being more and more phones with proper web apps on (I don't have one) will/can they run flash games also? If they are saying that the PC is most used because of casual gaming are mobile "phones" more of a threat to PC dominance than consoles?

On the other hand, i don't know anyone who uses consoles and all of my friends have gaming PC's. Afaik that's the common thing in europe except for the UK.

It's not uncommon in the UK. If you are a PC gamer, you tend to have lots of PC gamer friends.

I got really drunk the other month and was playing CoD 4 against some german people. I was shouting german at them, but kept forgetting words so had to describe what I meant using long words "The man with the thing that can kill you from 1000km away is in the place where they store the food for cows before it goes in the fields". I think they thought I was some kind of retard.

Meanwhile the Amstrad Users Club said:

Conclusive proof indeed.
