Right, in the past I used to hook up my Xbox 1 to the net (and by proxy my PC) by using a spare ethernet cable to connect the console to the router in the house. However, due to my console being situated upstairs (in the bedroom) and the router being situated downstairs, this resulted in a long cable trawling all the way up to the stairs, making navigation riskier for all than usual.

Today, I wish to give the old black X some connection love again, and this time I'd prefer to test out a wireless approach. However, before I scour the net looking for things, I'd like one of yous to help me out by pointing me to the most convenient item to use, at the cheapest possible price, so that I can cut some corners on time here. I've heard you need nothing more than a USB dongle or summat - is this correct? I'd also need to find a good guide to use in case I need to actually set up a connection and alter settings after connecting everything in.

Presumably anything wireless-related designed for 360 should by rights work with a 1, am I right?

Cheers once more.

No

Basically you have 3 choices.

1) Big long ethernet cable (as you previously had)

2) "Homeplugs" or whatever they are called where you use the electrical sockets in your house as a network cable , you need a plug and a cable at both ends - here is a basic one on ebay for £40 + £9 p&p

3) Wireless bridge - this needs to be connected to a computer first to setup , then you simply connect it to the xbox - can be a bit fiddly to setup - heres a typical one on ebay for £30

There are probably guides out there but I've not seen one in ages.

Are there any wireless bridges out there with multiple ethernet ports? I've got three consoles I want to connect to wireless but only one bridge, so I have to swap cables all the time.

I modded my original Xbox and looked into the wireless thing but it was way to confusing.. I ended up, luckily I suppose, with my Xbox near to my router so a lovely yellow cable (borrowed from work) connects the two.

There was loads of guides on the net though when I was looking how to do it but those plugs that use a powerpoint in your house seems favourite.

Just use a router in bridge mode? My Linksys WRT54G has 4 ethernet ports, and I'm certain you can set it up as a bridge.
