Well, it's rather spangly on first impressions. Seems a better handheld fit that the 'Stories' games on PSP which needed another analogue stick.

Other people who are interested in this game might like to discuss it further with me in PMs.

I've spent an hour or so just driving around and causing general mayhem.
Initial impressions are that it's a technical wonder on DS and that a lot of time, care & effort has gone into it.
It really does feel like a proper GTA game with very few corners cut.
Going to try some of the missions later.

I guess I'm not going to trade in my DS towards an Elite then.

Can't wait to try this now.

Played for an hour or so. I've done a few missions and won a house on a scratch card.

Walking controls are a bit odd, being only 8-way and I'm not sure about the targeting yet, but it seems pretty fucking good so far.

This is £18 and showing is In Stock at Play.

It's a no-brainer at that price.

I have to agree, the DS has been building up to something like this for a while, and the sheer scope of it embarasses a lot of titles I've previously considered to be good attempts at shrinking a larger platform title into the little hinged bastard.

I might actually buy a DS game for the first time since 2006.

Alright, I'm going to have to get this. After watching the trailers, I think it looks awesome and I'm bored of not being able to play the latest, techy games on the PC, so I look forward to doing so on the DS.

I'll have to buy a new charger though. Damn.

it is far better than i anticipated, it really fits perfectly to the DS and i even like the style (cartoony) than the 'too serious' GTA4 look. it really is like having an organised crime simulator in your pocket, especially with the dopewars mini game inside it..

It's when you go under the train tracks, go Ooooh, and then a train comes along and you go ooh again, and then you drive into something, it falls over, things swerve and a pile up occurrs that you know you are onto something :)

Some may consider the following spoilers, I suppose. It's not about the story or missions, but about a couple of side activities you can do in the game. I can't imagine anyone will not want to see this, but better safe than sorry with a new release game.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
The drug-dealing game is genius.

This afternoon I spent all my money - I had $12 left in my wallet - on some coke. Trying to get to a dealer who'd give me a good price for it, I clipped a police car, setting off a police chase, with me desperate to lose the cops before they busted me and took my drugs. (I don't reload GTA games, so if they'd caught me I'd have lost everything and would have had to have started making money from scratch.) However, I managed to take out the cops and get to the drug dealer with no wanted stars, making myself a handsome profit.

Ended up making about $40,000 in a single lunchtime, making some good deals. It's wonderful how player-friendly it is - you don't have to note down prices on a piece of paper or anything. It tells you if you're buying and selling at above or below market price, keeps track of special offers, etc.

Brilliant.

And I also hijacked an Ammunation truck, filling the office with swears as I desperately tried to steer the smoking wreck back to a secluded safe house while cops came at me from all angles. I got it there, then used the touch screen to cut the door open and grab the weapon inside.

Again, brilliant.

Helpful hints:

Using the PDA you can put the GPS navigation on the top screen as well as the map, which puts arrows on the road. It's very useful.

Also in the PDA you can save, so you don't need to wait for an autosave or go home to save your game.

I want this so bad I cannot even begin to describe. *Begins fidgeting in chair looking out of window towards distant unwalkable to Best Buy warehouse*

Um, can someone give me a lift?

Went to Best Buy and bought game plus DS Lite charger.

Directly after went out and got hammered with two mates for St Pat's day.

Got home at 1:00 in the morning and found the charger had disappeared from my bag. Why Lord?! Why?!

Whelp...

Walked to Best Buy risking life and limb in a mile and a half journey in the land of no sidewalks, but they'd run out of chargers. Fuck. Went to Target. Same deal. I began to feel paranoid, wondering if there was some higher power determined that I wouldn't play the game. Fortunately I got a travel pack and re-juiced it via a USB cable from the compy. Phew.

So I've been playing it, and I feel it is pretty damn excellent. I'm fairly terrible at it, but am having fun. The little missions you can pick up randomly are fun and I've made $6000 on drug deals. Been playing about an hour so far. It really is an incredible technical achievement, isn't it? I mean, blimey!

I've played it a bit and it's okay. It's no GTA2 but it's certainly had a shocking development in the story already. The walking feels a bit odd with expecting rotate and move. Certainly technically impressive though.

I must add that I find the frequent mix of touch screen activity and then buttons/dpad quite irritating.

I never got on with GTA2; I thought the first game was far superior.

GTA2 looked much nicer and had the interesting element of playing the various gangs off against each other which has been missing since. Still I'm usually at odds with everyone else so I'm probably wrong. Even GTA2 I didn't like THAT much.

I have your wife-to-be's DS and charger, have had it for about 6 months now and she doesn't appear to have missed it. I would suggest that you sell it (together with the now included 1Gb MicroSD which is heaviliy loaded with some 'stuff') and buy GTA with the proceeds before she notices.

I don't want to buy it, btw.

Keep "L1" held down when you're walking. Then you can use the d-pad to rotate left & right and the camera will always be behind you.
If you also hold down the run button ("B") there's no need to push up on the d-pad.

She has mentioned it a couple of times. She wants it back before we go on holiday because she wants to use it then.

The danger of setting a game in the future, I guess. One of the things I liked about the original GTA was that it was relatively obvious what each of the in-game cars were based on. The Beast GTS being the Viper, of course and the Cossie being the Ford Anglia (not really)

GTA2 didn't have any of that, so it was hard to relate to.

It did, however, have That Hard Cop From The Bill in the intro sequence.

Good point. I think this is why I tend to wince when people say, 'The next GTA should be set in the future!'. Er, no thanks. On the other hand, Crackdown 2 would be nice.

Spent all night looking for the bloody MicroSD card I have knocking about for saving stuff to. Because right now there's something I really want to save on it. But can I find it? Can I fuck.

The naive among you may wonder why I'm mentioning that in this thread.

So, this is really good yeah? Looks like I might actually be buying something on my DS tomorrow then!

It was (You had a cyberman avatar (as per tomb of the cybermen, I think)) I also sorted out an AP .adf file for you way back on WoS. I'm awesome.

I seem to remember there were issues with 1 charger between 2 DSs.

Got tired of looking, so I bought a new MicroSD card last night, so I was able to save those files I needed saving last night.

Anyway. Back to the subject at hand.

This Chinatown Wars game is ruddy terrific, isn't it?
