This 20W Wilkinson energy saving light bulb is pissing me off.

I want a god damn 150W incandescent bulb again. >:(

Are there any modern bulbs that can match the AWESOMENESS of a 150W bulb that's been slightly damaged and as a result emits even more light?

When I took delivery of my two 800 watt "readheads" last year, they were smoking abit so I had to run them in my office until they stopped smelling/smoking.

Man, your life brightens up with 1600 watts of lighting in a small room. Not to mention the heat!

I'm increasingly hating bright lights, I've always preferred no lights on at all when watching TV or on the PC or whatever, but I just can't stand direct light. It has to be shaded/reflected of a dull surface.

I'm increasingly finding the same outside too when it's really bright outside (and no I'm not talking about looking AT THE SUN) I actually think I'd be better of wearing shades or a baseball cap or something. I hate wearing hats, and I'm not really a shades person.

If I didn't know any better I'd worry that I was slowly turning into a vampire...

To be honest though, you might be better off with a bit of directional light with multiple sources - a blinding fuck-off powerful bulb hanging from the middle of the ceiling was never a terribly good idea, even in the 1950s. Get some uplight and adjustable spots for your work area maybe.

I can't have additional lights: there is no space for them and nowhere to plug them in.

Anyway, seems to me that what you need is some good quality light. Uplighters are the best for PC work and you can pick an uplighter lamp up from Homebase for about 30 quid.

I'm still using that exact same damn bulb one year later. Every other replacement that claims to be the same wattage is in fact less bright at maximum brightness.

I still want a "40W usage -> 200W equivalent" bulb. DAMN. IT.

I got one for a single-bulb room, and they are pretty damn good. It can take a minute or two to warm up to full awesomeness, but they are pretty bright even after 10 secs.

LampSpecs is good company - I found them when I was looking for DIMMABLE energy saving candle bulbs. I had one broken bulb in my box (not surprising tbh), and when I told em they sent a replacement straight away for free.

My parents' new-build bungalow has 4-pin lightbulbs and it's a pain in the ass finding replacements. The wiring in the place is clearly dodgy as they consistently blow after a few months, too.

Also, "dodgy wiring" can't cause lights to "blow". It might cause them to go out until the fault is fixed, and it might conceivably start a fire, but other than that, no.

There might be an over-voltage condition, which is easily checked. Or the bulbs used might be bad ones. This is more likely - some of mine have been in place for 8 years.

The 3-pin ones are clearly specially manufactured for this daft requirement, only one manufacturer seems to bother and it's quite possibly giving rubbish quality bulbs (as it knows anyone sensible will be changing the sockets to 2-pin as soon as the building inspector has pissed off).

No, 4-pin. They're not the bayonet cap bulbs, they're 4-pin "push-to-fit" bulbs.

Dodgy bulbs would seem to be the most reasonable explanation then, as we can't find them in any hardware store in town (including the B&Q Superstore) and have to get them direct off the council that rents them the bungalow.

Ah, this means that the tube is separate from the ballast.
The original CFL lamps were like that (i.e. they had a ballast which plugged into the bayonet socket and the tube plugged into the ballast).

Another type has a separate electronic ballast, often running several tubes. This is at least vaguely sensible because it avoids throwing away the electronics and ballast with the tube, which doesn't last as long.
On the other hand the range available is poor and the price higher than the integrated ones.

e.g.

Anyway if they're blowing these tubes frequently, it could well be the fault of the ballast!

I'd rip it out and fit normal bayonet sockets if possible.

Chances are they will have the bulbs you need in some decent wattages too.
