Back in times when people were very much pro god and stuff like that, and believed the afterlife was pure awesome, how come murder was a crime?

Discuss. :bulb:

Because murderers go to hell. Also, civilisation and society would crumble if murder were legal.

'Cos even back then people believe in God less than they pretend too.

Because every holy book ever has a "don't kill people" clause and religions are a lot better on blind obedience than they are on logic.

What about before we had laws? Society managed there, clearly, otherwise we woudn't be here now.

That's what I said!

Did you know, the commandment isn't "Thou shalt not kill", rather "Thou shalt not murder"

Harsh. Also unlikely seeing as I could totally take you.

You could say that you don't really have society without laws, even if they're just sort of unwritten tribal customs or a vaguely agreed way of doing stuff. It might not be a written down rule, but "don't kill anyone useful to our family group or we'll beat you with thigh bones and then eat your brains" is still sort-of a prohibition of murder.

Society always had laws, man, even when we were still figuring out how to scratch our arse without falling over. They just weren't codified until the Babylonians came along. Or at least, not as far as we can prove.

It doesn't really does it?

It's the coming into contact with a solid object after being subjected to gravity that kills.

I think it's the EM force that holds solids together, so it's the EM force that actually kills you.

Also, the number of the beast isn't 666. That was a mis-translation. It's 616.

I've no idea what you're talking about, but I'm going to pretend I do so I look cool. Yes.

A fragment of the oldest known book of revelations was discovered a few years back, I think it was. Can't remember where I read about it, though.

Ah yes, Hobbes' adage that life without government (the Leviathan) would be nasty, brutish, and short.

Yes that's it, I knew it was wrong, but couldn't think of what was right (in as such as anything is right about Vanilla Ice)
