Hah. Southland Tales was supposedly the 'spiritual successor to Donnie Darko'. What a pile of shite that was.

I know it's fashionable to hate Donnie Darko now, but I really liked it. I'm not sure what they could do with a second film, though; especially knowing how it all worked.

I loved Donnie Darko, thouh it seems that the director might just have got lucky.

Isn't this meant to be set a bit further on down the timeline, focusing on his younger sister or something?

Sort of, although the trailer would suggest that the people behind the sequel missed the point of the first film in every conceivable way. Also, the 's' in the title presumably stands for 'straight to video' along with being the initial of the protagonist's first name.

Donnie Darko is another high profile film that I've never seen.

Not as good as that film where J-Lo goes inside a bad man's head.

I didn't know it was fashionable to hate Donnie Darko. I do hate it, though. It's bullshit and completely winged by the writer. It was written with no underlying meaning and then given one when someone who watched it came up with it. Which would be fair enough if the writer didn't make himself out to be some sort of genius who did it intentionally all along. Unsatisfying bollocks.

edit: Isn't he ripping off that Twilight Zone episode about the box with money in next anyway?

Yeah, I've heard that said a lot before. I've not seen anyone come up with any evidence to suggest that, though.

Given my experience studying English literature, that could arguably be said of anything written ever.

Yeah, but in that there quote of what I just said a couple of posts ago, you (rather infuriatingly) missed out "Which would be fair enough". Which it would be, but the guy is made out to be a genius for it, even though he has done fuck all of merit since, and clearly got lucky with a shite, supposedly deep film that people like a friend of mine* enjoy because it makes them feel intelligent.

*I was sat next to this friend on the train yesterday, and he wrote a poem, just so I thought he was all deep and thoughtful and what have you. You know the type.

I'm not going to argue about Donnie Darko, though, because I really fucking hate it and you'll only get a narrow minded view from me, defended until I'm angry.

Fine, then consider I quoted the whole lot, and I still apply my comment to the complete paragraph. See here:

HELLO LIFE IN MALIA TOWERS!

MaliA: Nah, thing is, see, people think of a story, and write it, then the academics think it is acebest and write stuff about the story and the choice of words, and it kinda spirals from there

mrsA: It is an argument that has been going on for quite some time. Do authors write to a style, or does the style come from the writing, and who writes the meaning into it?

MaliA: I like tits.

AND ANOTHER THING!

That was exactly the point I was alluding to when I challenged people to rewrite "The Crow Road" in a Victorian novel style. I hate to say I'm way ahead of the fucking zeitgeist, but it seems I am.

I found it mildly entertaining, but about 0.6% as good as people kept claiming. Definitely not worth watching again.

Donnie Darko was excellent fun. Lightweight, pseudo-meaningful balls, indeed, but the pros outweigh the cons because the cons picked out by naysayers are so preposterously out of proportion in terms their detrimental effect on the film overall as to be easily dismissed.

It had some great moments:

- One of the best openings to a film ever
- The choice of music
- Giant nightmare rabbit with a spooky voice
- Patrick Swayze having a 'kiddie porn dungeon'
- "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion"

But, whatever you do, don't watch the Director's Cut version, as it is a complete travesty. If you've watched that first and are basing your opinion of the film on it, then I'm sorry, you have erred. I doubt watching the original will help much unless you're willing to go back to it with a completely open mind.

I don't really remember a great deal about Donnie Darko other than the premise having been done numerous times before (see Jacob's Ladder) and it being a portentous piece of pretentious emo tat and I agree with most people's assertions that it got lucky being feted the way it did.

Surprised at the Darko hate. I enjoyed the original, considering it an intriguing take on the fantasy genre with overtones of superhero movies and time travel, and thought the director's cut was interesting, too. I've absolutely zero interest in the sequel, though, given that the original tied everything up nicely.

:this: basically.

I really like Donnie Darko, it's an entertaining film. I don't really understand all the hate it gets, other than the fact that it got rather over-hyped in some quarters.
