I am thinking of organising a SFIV tournament in a similar fashion to the SWOS one run by Romanista a while back. A league where we play each other twice and then a knock-out stage at the end.

If you are interested in this, post here and we shall see what the interest is.

Those who have shown interest so far:
11 Challengers:
Nirejhenge 10 pts
zaphod79 8 pts
Craig 4 pts
ChocoboOfDoom 4 pts
Scarysheep3000 4 pts
Tippy 4 pts
TheVision 2 pts
Zardoz 0 pts
Morte 0 pts
Rominista 0 pts
Trousers 0 pts

Rules:
The tournament will be in a league format with a knock-out round at the end (the four highest players will participate in a single match semi-final and a single match final). Each player will play each other twice, in the schedule randomly chosen at the beginning of the tournament. All players will play all opponents once before completing a second round of matches. A match will consist of three rounds each of 99 seconds. Players may choose any character they wish (including identical ones) and may change character from match to match. The player hosting the match should choose their character first unless the players agree otherwise.

As there are likely to be quite a few players it will take too long to play one match a week. Therefore each player will be given three matches to play each week. They should aim to complete them before the next week begins. If a match has not been completed by the end of the second week each player should contact me explaining why. If neither player contacts me the match will be deemed a no score draw. If one player contacts me claiming not to be able to contact his opponent and his opponent does not contact me to explain why then the player who communicates with me will be awarded a win. If a player misses two matches in a row he/she will be disqualified. If the first round of games has not been completed then all points won by this player’s opponents will be removed. If the player is disqualified in the second round of matches only those points won in the second round will be removed.

A win will earn 2 points. A draw will earn 1 point. I am not sure if it is actually possible to have a Double K.O draw but we shall make the provision. A draw may also be awarded if both players agree to it but there must be exceptional reasons for this to occur (not being able to play the match will not be accepted).

The first week of matches will be posted on the 9th of March.

Week One Matches (to be completed by the 15th of March):

Scarysheep Vs Chocobo of Doom : Chocobo of Doom Win
Nirejhenge Vs The Vision : Nirejhenge Win

Are we going to have to pick one character and stick with them for the whole tournament, or are we going to be able to pick anyone throughout?

I'm sure this will come up in the rules but I thought I'd raise it now... Doesn't bother me, I'm only good with one character!

I think I'll have a go at this. I don't reckon I'll be worthy competition but it's interesting playing against other humans. I still need to fix my headset though..

I wanted to gauge support before coming up with the rule set. But generally speaking I envisage each player to play each other twice (like any football league) and at the end the top four or so can have a quick knock-out competition to find the winner.

Matches would be the basic 99 second three round bout. Any character can be chosen by either player. The 'home' player can host unless he/she agrees not to.

If anything else needs clarifying let me know.

I'll give it a few more days for people to join before getting it organized and announcing some starting dates.

Please bare in mind that this tournament could go on for some time so if you are thinking of getting the game in a few weeks time put still want to join in it may be worth while spending a few extra quid on it now, money which can be recouped via the enjoyment of playing with people in the tournament.

Perhaps.

I gave up around attempt number 5. Can get through Easy without using a continue (I think I only lost one or 2 rounds total) until bastard cunting Seth.

I managed to beat Medium with Akuma and 3 round battles! It took 2 continues on seth. I struggle most when he starts teleporting. If I can keep him at a distance the air fireballs do him in. I can't imagine beating him with anyone else.

As Chun Li try flying kicking the bastard then when your in close - crouch/medium punch him in the gut. You can kinda trap him that way. Got to get your timing and positioning just right though.

With most characters you can beat the other player into the corner and 'hold' them there while you pummel them however seth just does his power move (either the teleport throw or the ultra combo) and your toast.

I found with him getting 'just out of reach' - popping in to hit him then retreating back worked out quite well for most of the 'standard' fighters (ryu/ken/sagat/akuma/etc)

Well, to get round legal issues he's based half on Blofeld and half Odd Job - Oddfeld.

In preparation for the forthcoming tournament I took on TheVision last night. A fairly even match up but he's certainly a killer with Zangief. A thoroughly enjoyable match up. Shame my headset is so dodgy. I couldn't hear you for the most of it Mr Vision, especially toward the end. I believe you said something before we parted but I didn't get any of it. :(

I might buy this in the next day or two, as I've sold enough stuff via Amazon Marketplace to make it viable.

How much should I be looking to pay online for the game? And how much in one of those old fashioned shop things?

I'd like to give this a go although:
a) I am pretty rubbish
b) My BT home hub (what state of the art technology, hey?) seems to be playing silly buggers when matching up sf4 games.

Its quite strange the lack of different characters you face online.

The most common ones are Ken / Sagat / Ryu and Akuma (who is a real b****d for his super move which seems to be unblockable (die 1000 deaths))

After that there are the Zangief players who once they have mastered the moves just wipe the floor with you and the Gouken(?) ones who stand back and just fire multiple fireballs.

I think i've played one person with Guile and one with Blanka and no-one on any of the others so despite the vast character lists for online it comes down to about 5 characters who are spammed by everyone.

Online about £28 for most places or £24 at the hut (from Savygamer) : http://savygamer.co.uk/search?q=street+fighter+iv

Shop wise I think Asda had it on special for about £29 , most other places I think its about £32/£33

Wow, that sucks hard then. Ange almost killed me when my steering wheel arrived, so I won't be getting a hori stick for a while.

Plus I've run out of room to store plastic Xbox peripherals.

Just buy the game and then slowly realise you want/need a stick and buy it later.

No, I don't own a single fighting game. I used to like SFII years ago, which is what's piqued my interest in IV.

I love fighting games... by which I mean I really used to love the Tekken series. I did also, however, enjoy the original SFII, so much so that I even played the abysmal Amiga version of it.

I think I'll double check that this isn't oddly cheap in my local Game store, and then buy it off of that there internet.

As such, count me in for the tourney, though I will be double plus bad.
