You may remember I acquired an old laptop a while back, but had problems with it connecting to my home network due to out of date drivers. I tried updating them using their website, but it didn't fix it.

I've seen quite a few of these programs about, but are there any reputable ones? I don't want to install any malware/adware by accident. I don't mind paying a little bit to get it up and running. I did get the computer for free, after all.

At the risk of sounding like an IT spod, you should probably get hold of an XP disk and installl from scratch, preferably with a SP3 slipstreamed version. SP3 has a boatload of drivers for standard hardware.

On a related note, there is a website that has recommendations for the top freeware utils for loads of different things (media players, cd burners, text editors, virus checkers, etc, etc) I can't for the life of me remember what it is. Does anyone know?

I did install XP from scratch as soon as I got it. I think it's SP2, though.

No.

it doesn't have all the dross, just the best 2 or 3 applications for pretty much every thing you could possibly want to do.

It's bookmarked on a PC I don't have access to at the moment.
