For their current cat, Tilly (I still prefer her original name of Storm), my parents bought a scratching post to hopefully avoid the problem of everything being scratched. Tilly just uses it as well as clawing at everything.

Yeah ours do too, well that and the fences outside. They do however often chase each other round with claws extended for extra grip, so the sofa has a couple of pulls on it.

That's true - when they're not sure about where they're jumping, there will be claws deployed. This includes jumping onto knees.

I think you can only have it done if it's for medical reasons. Ingrowing claws and the like.

Declawing cats is a fucking disgraceful thing to do, from watching how much they use them I'd imagine it would be about the same as a person losing all their fingers. Is it still common in the US then?

I'm not so sure, I'd say that the majority of food we consume and clothes we wear amount to little more than entertainments. It's not like we're slaughtering the odd pig just to survive through winter.

Animal hide is more hard wearing than many plant based alternatives, and furs are useful for warmth.

My dogs are both neutered -- it was a requirement of the RSPCA, they won't let any dog or cat go out without being neutered. As they spend so much time taking care of unwanted puppies and kittens, I can understand that.

And I've had one of my dog's tails docked too. I'm not doing too well here, am I?

Declawing cats is a vile thing to do though.

It started off being called "ted" as that was all he could pronounce at the time. Now, however, this lacks a certain something and is a smidgen undestinctive and needs expanding. We are considering "Teddington Woofenbark-Smythe."

QI OVERGENERALISATION SIREN. My lurchers are some intermix of whippet and deer hound, both of which are working stock. Our last lurcher, a collie/greyhound cross, lived to 16 years of age.

You seem to be confusing all pets with certain breeds of dog. For instance cats have pretty much evolved over tens of thousands of years to live in a symbiotic relationship with man, they hang around us because they get food and warmth and we get pest control and companionship. A normal domestic cat is the same thing it has been for hundreds of years.
