My parents had a norton anti virus thing with their computer, and has now run out, are there free alternatives?

AVG is fairly good, in my experience.

Avast is pretty good. Also the occasional scan with Arcavir is good. Arcavir is in polish but there's also english options. All I know is Skasuj means delete so I click that.

I also recommend Super Anti Spyware.

I'm using Avast. It hasn't really been tested yet, though, so I have no idea how good it is. Doesn't pop up as many annoying messages as AVG, though.

I use Avast, but I had to turn off the annoying-sounding yank who says 'Virus database has been updated' everytime it's been updated.

I've just stuck Avast onto this one.

I find that very cheering. I lead a solitary life and the knowledge that everyone is hearing it at the same time makes me feel connected to humanity for an instant.

I use Avast now after several recommendations from our lovely Bezzies, and I haven't been able to fault it so far. AVG was being an arse refusing to update, and nagging me to restart every time I booted the computer.

I used to use AVG, but it was annoying so I went to avast. no problems at all. I would say that I occasionally use one of those online scan places (bulldog I think) and that seems better at scanning archives.

I use AVG, but as the beex crew recommend avast, i might try it.

Never had any problems with AVG. Are there any obvious advantages on using Avast?

I swapped (paid-for) AVG 8 for Avast! free on an old P4M laptop and it made a startling difference to performance, everything seemed snappier.

Another Avast recommendation from me.

Although I did last year still manage to get a virus (whether or not AGV wouldve stopped this, I do not know).

No other problems in over two years of usage tho.

Meh, some dodgy web pop-up last night seemingly managed to turn AVG off, through Chrome 2.0. On fully-updated Vista SP1. As a standard user. With UAC on and no admin popups.

SpywareGuard keeps incessantly popping up on my laptop to tell me that there are '29 threats detected', despite a scan with AVG revealing nothing. I can't get the fucking thing to stop doing it and it's driving me up the wall.

Thoughts/suggestions?

SpywareGuard or Spyware Guard?

The latter is malware. If it's the former, is there no way to get it to do something about (or at least list) the things it finds?

Not sure (I'm round the missus's tonight). I suspect the latter since a. it pops up every five minutes flashing warnings at me, b. it's not something I consciously put on there and c. my 'proper' virus checker can't find any of these apparent threats.

It does offer me the option of deleting the threats, but only if I 'register' (and presumably pay through the nose).

If it is malware, how do I tell it to fuck off? I tried uninstalling it, but that had no apparent effect.

Get a real anti-malware product to sort it out. Spybot S&D is always pretty reliable.
