I have it connected to my PC via HDMI. I have sound going in separately of course as the graphics card doesn't give out sound.
If I boot the PC and then put the TV on when it's completed I get no sound.
If I switch the TV onto standby or pull out the power while the PC is on, if I had sound before, I won't when it's back on.
But if I reset the PC the sound returns. The sound will work on other channels.
If I let the TV sleep of its own accord when not in use and reactivate it with movement of the mouse or something, then I do still get sound.
Someone suggested that it was the TV defaulting to HDMI sound, which obviously I don't have from a graphics card. Is there some way to set the TV to only use the phono input? Any ideas?

Stick some headphones in the back of the PC and work out if it's a problem with the PC or the TV. That'll cut down the troubleshooting options.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?
(sorry)
What graphics card? I know many are capable of sending sound even though they are graphics cards. (Mine claims to send sound through one of the DVI ports if the HDMI adapter is used, but I can't test it due to not having a HDMI port on my HDTV Judging by the manual, Of note, the standard audio outputs are disabled if the GFX card (ATI HD3800 series) HDMI output is used.

I was reading something about making a HTPC (Home Theater PC) the other day, and it was talking about the HDMI and the secure connection needed between source and display.
HDMI can take sound, so maybe the TV is expecting there to be sound coming through the cable, and as there isn't any is keeping silent.

Does your soundcard try to automatically detect what sort of speakers are plugged into it? My asus mobo onboard sound does this, sometimes gettng it wrong. Have a look in the sound settings to see if you can see anything to do with this.

No. My soundcard is an M-Audio Delta 2496 so it uses red/white phono out. It's also got SP/DIF on it but I don't use that. It's not a major problem. It just means I can't switch off the TV and get sound when I switch it back on.
