Mutant Chronicles - Mainly watched because it had the lovely princess woman from Hellboy 2 in it AND Ron Perlman (and John Malkovich and Devon Aoki, man! What a cast!). It's quite Sky Captain in the World of Tomorrow ish in that it's mostly CG backgrounds and it's also a bit world war two esque (though quite a long way into the future). Story: Corporations at war, reactivate ancient machine which makes people into super fast killing machines, priest assembles crack squad to destroy it whilst everyone else buggers off to mars in escape ships.

Ron plays an intelligent, largley non combat character here which is great as he pulls it off remarkably well. He plays the priest type. Sure he does a bit of fighting but not that much. He's not the usual stupid badass guy. It's got some great action and it generally looks nice whilst having some reasonably well defined characters. Something about it just really drew me in.

Strongly recommended to anyone who likes a bit of dark grimy futuristic slightly steam punk stuff.

Sorry to single this out, but I have a bit of a problem (yes, that's right a problem - not an 'issue') with the large number of new threads begun on this forum. It's too much. Often there are 2 or 3 really inane 'I think x what do you think?' threads begun a day.

Main thrust of this post: use your thread starting ability sparingly.

Eh? I think this one's a perfectly legitimate topic.

That Mutant Chronicles completely passed me by, which is surprising consider it looks very much like my kind of thing. Must give it a watch sometime.

As for films better than their IMDB rating - almost anything by Enzo Castellari. I can't think of anything I've seen recently though. I was going to say the surprisingly decent Death Race 'remake', but IMDB seems to be agreeing with me there.

This is a message board where people converse on things that interest them. Thus if someone thinks something is of interest, why not post it? You can always ignore it if you don't want to read it. More topics is a good thing, keeps a board lively.

Hey maybe we should have a topic about this.

Hugh, what you're suggesting is the complete opposite of what we want to happen. Nigel is right, if something interests someone then they should post it. If no one else is bothered then it'll be on the second page by tomorrow.

I think this is how it's supposed to work:
Someone has something to say on a new subject not covered by any existing topics. They have to try and guess how much interest (in terms of responses, rather than just people reading it) it will get from other people.
If they think it won't get much response it should go in bits & bobs, otherwise start a new topic.

The problem is, nobody knows how much interest a topic is going to generate, which is why there are some threads with very few (or no) responses and why the mods have to keep splitting popular topics out of bits & bobs.

I can't speak for the mods, but I think they'd probably rather have more low-response threads than more threads needing to be created from bits & bobs posts?

I have been interrupted by breakfast and myp has summarised it better than I have.

I note that you had to dig up a month-old thread to make your point.

Of course by moaning about that here, you've swerved a thread massively off topic. But if you had started a thread about your concern you would have contributed to the problem. Catch 22!

I don't think we can particulary sucessfully socially engineer the amount of threads made, mainly because we all disagree about what threads are the good ones that should stay.

On the flip side what this forum encourages (which many forums hate) is necro-posting. Resserecting threads is A Good Thing.

So I think we should all try toremember to search first. And not be afraid to keep posting in threads just because they are slow. Myself especially included.

If you don't like the thread, don't read or comment in it, simple as that. It's not like it's going to make your eyes bleed if there are more topics is it?

Oh and to answer the OP. A film that is much better than I expected was "stranger than fiction" with Will Ferrell. Not a typical Ferrell film at all. Much better than it had any right to be.

Ferrell is a boring tax collector who can hear the narrator of the film. Which is an interesting enough idea to carry it for me. It also has [husky voice]RAAACHEAALLL!![/husky voice] from Batman in it too.

I think his argument is that it makes looking for the interesting threads too much hard work, when they are surrounded by fluff. Which is a fair complaint.

Of course one mans fluff is another mans......

er, linen.

Well, I have to search for interesting topics for me aswell-most of them are Xbox related that I dodge as I don't have one (curses!) and other things that are beyond my intellectual grasp (so most of the threads :D)
But I don't get annoyed by it, it doesn't take 2 seconds to have a look for something that interests you does it? Just ignore the stuff that doesn't.
I'm not having a go at all, sorry if it may seem that way.

EDIT: This is going off-topic anyway, so I'll leave it there as it's unfair to this thread

I stand by my 5:00am drunk self. Point has been made, no further comment required.

Also, IMDb's rating system gives you an excellent breakdown of how the votes were spread across the scores. I don't agree that 2001: A Space Odyssey is an 8.4 - it should be a 10. But the median score is a more encouraging 9.

Repo Man.

IMDB says 6.8

I say 10 because it is clearly the best film ever made.

Teeth.

IMDB says 5.9, I say 8.

Not a horror movie, but a comedy. Nearest comparison I can think of offhand is But I'm A Cheerleader! Only Teeth is better. A bit of blood and missing body parts, so not for the very squeamish, but I found it very funny and laughed a lot.

Great thread topic.

I thought Mutant Chronicles was really really poor, though.

Damn right!

Super Mario Bros movie: 3.7/10
3.7?!?!? Gedouttahere! That's a classic movie, it's worth a 7 at least. As game derived movies go, it's extremely inventive - the whole parallel universe with an alternative evolution from lizards instead of monkeys is great scifi and makes for a genuine plot. The special effects are well done (some of the dino creatures are excellent) and who can forget the electric police car chase!

Johnny Mnemonic 4.8/10
Doh, wrong wrong wrong. This is a cyberpunk classic. OK, no movie could really do justice to Gibson's stories, and some of it's a bit strained, but what's not to love about Henry Rollins crashing an armoured bread van into a crazed Dolph Lundgren?
And a mind reading dolphin! And hilariously out of date data storage capacities?

And Ice T with a crossbow! I watched this again recently and you're absolutely right on every count ("How much storage do you have?" "Eighty gig." *chucklesnort*). Johnny Mnemonic is hugely good fun. Also, nobody can describe how terrible Canoe Reeves is in this film. You have to see it for yourself. He's so awful it's actually a little bit awesome.

C'est magnifique, mais ce n'est-pas l'acting.

It isn't anywhere near as bad as you'd expect, but Reeves is perfectly acceptable in a lot of pseudoscience thrillers - it's when he ventures into other realms he falls apart as he can't emote - I've seen cigar store Indians with more charisma. However, he's made to look a right multifaceted thesp by Dolph Lundgren

Chocolate. The Thai one, not one of the many other films with the same title.

Remember Ong Bak? Tony Jaa was pretty good at the ass-kicking. Then he went a bit mental. So, his ex-chum and director Prachya Pinkaew went out and found a new martial arts star. Here's what he came up with.

The trailer is certainly worth a look. Features probably the best trailer tag-line of recent years. Enjoy.

Galaxy Quest is a 7.2 on IMDB. It's an easy 9 due to;

Tony Shalhoub being excellent as the engineer with NO clue.
Alan Rickman being proper sarky but managing to not be cheesy when the cheesy bit comes up.
Signourney Weaver's boobies. Yes I know but ever since she ran around in her pants in Alien I've had a thing for her.
And the whole playfull riff on Sci-Fi that never gets too nasty or self aware.

Everyone I've shown Galaxy Quest to has liked it. Even my Dad, who just doesn't do sci-fi.

Evil Dead 2 is only 7.9

It's easily 9.5. It's fucking awesome.

(It would be 10 if I played Ash)

Chronicles of Riddick is only 6.4. I don't care what any cunt says, that was a brilliant film. Shakespeare would have loved it and it made Vin Diesel not look like a twat, which is no mean achievement in itself.

I love Riddick as well. Thandie Newton/Judi Dench spoil things a little but still easily worth an 8 and looks amazing in HD.
