Scientists hope to end the "ingrained misconception" linking eggs with high blood cholesterol and heart disease after new research was published.

Nearly half (45%) of the UK public believe they should eat a maximum of three eggs a week, but a study has concluded that cholesterol in eggs has only a small and clinically insignificant effect on blood cholesterol.

I knew it, I bloody knew it.

There was a doctor in Denmark not so long ago that set out to prove this by eating something like 5-7 eggs every day for 1 or 2 months or something and measuring his cholesterol levels. He found that there was no measurable increase.

Eggs are ace

But i think the whole colesterol thing is mainly due to cooking them in lots of oil rather then the egg itself

Little Chef scrambled eggs aren't nice.

I only like eggs if the yoke & white are mixed, à la scrambled, omelettes etc. I've never got on with boiled, fried or poached eggs.

Soft Boiled eggs are the ONE TRUE WAY of eating them. I have a recipe somewhere....

Does anyone know the secret of frying more than one egg? Every time I try to cook them they just become a congealed blob of eggy muck.

Let them, then just cut them apart with a fishslice for serving.

Start cooking one, let that get clear boundaries, then start cooking the 2nd one, let that get clear boundaries, then the 3rd one. And so on.

Also, the hotter the oil is before you add the eggs, the less they'll spread when they hit the pan. One tip is to use circular pastry cutters. Put them in a pan, crack the eggs into them and they should retain their shape. It's what McDonalds do for their egg muffins.

People believe eggs will nuke their arteries because the yolk is like a cholesterol singularity, more of the stuff in the space than physics will normally allow. What people refuse to then listen to (because they've already run off screaming to get a hammer and go chicken smashing) is that the human body is really bad at metabolising cholesterol in food, and even then it doesn't enter the bloodstream as bad cholesterol - that results from the digestion of other stuff.

I've known this since 1997, and am constantly surprised when "new" research claims to be proving this for the first time - which seems to happen every 18 months or so.

well they have a 6 ringed thing which you crack them in and then boiling water is placed ontop, to they are half fried half poached.... worked there when I was 16...

Good point. You need the water because otherwise the egg is too thick to cook on top without torching the bottom.

When one of my stepdads had a heart attack he was told to stay away from certain foods (and alcohol and cigarettes) but the two foods that the doctor kept hammering home to him to avoid were eggs and bananas. Is this a common recommendation after a heart attack? Eggs I had heard of before, but not bananas. He didn't like bananas so my brother formulated a theory that it was handy way of shooing away any offerings of foods with banana in.

That's almost as far from proving something as you can get. That's exactly the same as your grandpa saying that smoking doesn't cause lung cancer because he's smoked 20 a day since he was 3.

I'm glad he isn't my doctor.

But still yay for eggs. Omellete with cheese, onion, ham and sweet chilli sauce = yum yum.

Don't bananas have large quantities of potassium? Isn't that bad for people with heart attacks? Maybe it is something like that.

Mmm, bananas can have effects on the heart because of high potassium levels, but I've only ever heard of people being told to eat more bananas due to heart problems.

Potassium is the only thing I know about bananas. I didn't know that had an effect on heart attack victims/sufferers, though. I shall googlify.

So far it is not looking good for John:

Quote:
Bananas may reduce the risk of heart disease as the potassium found in them helps regulate blood pressure. This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it the perfect food for helping to lower blood pressure and reduce stroke naturally.

Edit:

Quote:
Does consuming bananas help reduce hypertension?
Dr Devi Shetty: No.

EDIT THE SECOND:

I have googled around, and most sources say that bananas are good for the heart and may ward of strokes and heart attacks - the only mention I can find of them being linked to heart attacks is other people asking why the doctor has told them/a parent not to eat bananas after having a heart attack. I'll look into this further, only because it confuses me, but if anyone does find out or happens to know, do say. Sorry to derail the egg thread with banana chat.

I don't like eggs.

Apart from Egg:

IIRC Many people have a much lower than recommended potassium intake, which can lead to heart disease. A very high level can lead to heart attacks, but only tends to occur with dodgy kidneys.

Edit : Seems wiki agrees with me

Quote:
Individuals suffering from kidney diseases may suffer adverse health effects from consuming large quantities of dietary potassium. End stage renal failure patients undergoing therapy by renal dialysis must observe strict dietary limits on potassium intake, since the kidneys control potassium excretion, and buildup of blood concentrations of potassium may trigger fatal cardiac arrhythmia.

I did consider it, but I'm a plain nerd rather than a plane nerd. Someone would've piped up and gone 'Actually, that particular model is unusual in its single-yokedness'.

Our chickens laid their first egg this morning. It's a bit small and odd looking. I think I shall leave it a few weeks before eating one, a bit like letting a tap run a bit before drinking the water.

My brother has some chickens. As a measure of how much of a yokel he is, he got a couple as a thank you present for helping a mate move house, and another he adopted after my niece found it wandering around in the road.
