Bulky? Yes. But at least it's the original hardware, rather than software emulation, so - erm - you'll have less compatibility problems. Yes.

Rather annoyingly, your money will get you the guts while they leave you to build the thing yourself. Not very enticing then...

actually...

whilst we're in the ballpark.

where's PSP PS1 emulation up to now?

It was all fine and then a CFW made all my games stop working cos they were patch for 2.81 or something (I dunno). is there a way that is upgrade proof now?

Hmmm. What PS1 games should I be playing on my PSP? I didn't really own a PS1, and when I did spend time with one I mostly only played Gran Turismo.

Ooh, I'll want a PS1 RMD as well at some point, what with getting a PS2 and all.

Is it possible to play multiplayer PS1 games on a PSP? If so, then Bishi Bashi Special would be good. For other music games, there's Parappa the Rapper and Um Jammer Lammy. If you can play Japanese PS1 games on a PSP, Perfect Performer - The Yellow Monkey is worth a look too. Wonder if Vib Ribbon works?

Anyway, non-music games.. Bushido Blade, Muppet Racemania and er, others I can't think of right now.

After I sold most of my PS1 collection off, the only games I kept were GTA, GTA: London, Worms, and all the Final Fantasy games.

I think the PS1 was the most soulless console ever. I will never have warm memories of it. All the soul and character of a breeze block.

Never used a PS2 or 3 then? I'll take the fairly charming original over those two beasts any day.

The PS1 was a massively shit console. I had a PS1 and found it soulless and a step back. When I first got a PS1 I was shocked at how blocky and low res the graphics were. Yeah they were 3D but it felt like "the man" had decided to produce a console and we should all suckle at it's teat.

Granted nothing has changed which is why I'd take the Megadrive, Dreamcast or even a GX4000 over a PS1. The PS1 was the death of gaming as I loved it.

First game I played on the PS1 was Wipeout 2097, and I thought it was arcade quality awesome.

Yeah. Before the PS1 came out, I was very much with chinnyhill10. I hated the fact that the console party was being gatecrashed by some general electronics company with a grey console (despite my SNES being, you know, grey an' all). But it turned out my Nintendo loyalty was actually Final Fantasy loyalty, and I got a PlayStation in during 1996.

Ridge Racer was one of the games in my bundle and it had the same effect playing SFII on my SNES did: 'fuck the past, this is where it's at!'

Despite the PS1 ageing badly and people loving the Wii-60 generation, I have not had that feeling this go-round.

I have a PSone (which I picked up for £10 new from dixons in late 2005) I have always maintained that my cd32 is better than the PS1.

Granted the PSone had a much larger base of games, and had SONY rather than Commodore behind them, but looking at the quality of the graphics, and listening to the audio I have to disagree.

Not necessarily, though! There are some essentials, full of heart and character:

G-Darius
R-Type Delta
Raiden DX
Silent Bomber
X-Multiply (as part of the Arcade Gears Image Fight & X-Multiply pack)
Castlevania: SotN

Surely it should be all about the games? Much like the PS3 in this generation, the CD32 had a few shoddy A1200 ports where you had to press up to jump and that was it.

I can't remember exactly when the CD32 and PS came out, but at the point I first made the comparison there was probably about the same amount of games for both of them.

If Commodore had not have gone bust, and the CD32 had the same level of success as the A1200 then I think the CD32 would have held up quite favourably, the PS probably would still have dominated, but the CD32 would have been up there, and people in the know would be aware that it was the better (if less successful) format.

You think the CD32 had better graphics and sound than the PS1? I quite like some of the games on the CD32, but my PS1 got used a hell of a lot more.

well, as i bought the ps1 only 1,5 year ago orso (for 4 euros), i can now fill my collection with nice 2d games with soul, leaving the soulless gaming destroying 3d things far behind..

(the ps1 period coincides with me going tocollege and not spending money on games, but just booze etc.)

Thing is, it's hardly comparing like for like.

Compare the PS1s 2d graphics to the cd32s, the ps1 wins easily (Castlevania: SOTN beats anything I ever played on the cd32)
Compare the PS1s 3d graphics to the cd32s and it's an even more obvious win for the ps1. The cd32 had no 3d chip, couldn't do texturing with any speed, and couldn't really do Doom even.

I'd agree with the sound, but that's because the Amiga's soundchip was awesome, not because the Playstation's was crap.
