Right. This might be the most boring thread ever created, but here goes.

I've decided that I need a new PC that'll play games. Specifically that new fangled Far Cry 2. Seeing as I've got a 360 it would need to be funky enough to look better than that version.

Can anyone spec me up? Specifically, what sort of CPU, motherboard, graphics card, case, RAM, HDD, and cooling gubbins could I get for £500ish? Most important out of that for me would be the motherboard and cooling stuff as I'm not really clued up on the modern stuff- socket 7 is the newest I go. Would a 2/3 GHz quad core need more than the traditional fan with another fan on the case?

Cheers, people.

DON'T! It is dark path. There lies insanity and pain.

Decent dual core cpu and at least 2 gb memory, nice fast hard disk and the best graphics card you can afford.

Why don't you just buy the 360 version? Seems a significantly cheaper option.

I know. It would make a lot more sense. I remember the days when every couple of years there'd be a must have PC game that meant I'd have to upgrade, but there hasn't been anything for years. I was going to do it for Crysis, but that turned out to be a disappointment and it wasn't worth it. Thing is, my current PC can only just run doom 3, so I've decided it's time, basically. I've actually avoided the 360 version specifically for this.

Go into Game and look at the PC chart. The rows of Sims expansions, MMORPG expansions, and Pony Trek simulators should convince you that right now spending plenny penny on an upgraded PC for gaming really isn't the best route to take.

PC gaming is dead. Console yourself with a 360 copy (arf).

This I don't agree with. I would say that right now, PC gaming is not worth investing money in, however.

So Fallout 3, FC2, GTA4 and so on (basically all of the actually good games the 360 has) means it's dead, all at a good 10-15 quid less than the 360 versions?

Yup, Arf.

He could always buy a PS3 That just so happens NOT TO BE GETTING ANY OF THE FO3 ADD ONS.. Mmmm, yummy

This I agree with, because you simply don't need to.

350-500 quid is the sweet spot for a (gaming) PC these days, and it's so much more besides (let's say add on 13 quid and it's a freeview TV too).

A shite PC will run you 250 quid now, add a half decent video card for about a oner and you're laughing.

Far Cry 2 screams along on my PC, which I bought last June, which then was 500 quid.

So hey, if it helps here are my specs.

1 Advent PC. Came with a Quad Core Phenom (2.4ghz, oced to 2.6 a core) 4gb ram, 750gb hdd, 16xdvdrw onboard everything.
1 XFX 9800GTX 750 odd mb for a oner, all in 500 quid.

I hear the Radeon 4670 is a very capable card, so coupled with a low end 2.xghz C2D and 2gb ram PC (about 250 jib) and a Rad (50 odd Jib) youll run FC2 faster and better than a 360 can. And youll have a PC that can do alot more besides.

Why? Because they probably still in the early stages of their next project and so have manpower to spare.
Because XBox code is similar enough to PC code. to be able to not spend much in porting, making it practically risk free, marketing aside.
Because quite often a working PC build is kept while coding the XBox version for debugging purposes, and all it really needs is some configuration robustness added.

Spending £250 on a shite anything doesn't strike me as a good idea, frankly.

Anyway. What you need to run Far Cry 2 isn't that important. What you need to PLAY it, however, is a lot of patience and low expectations.

Oh man.

Don't say that. It has to be the bestest thing evar. If I believe it is then it will be. For a bit, anyway.

It's not terrible. After a few hours, it wasn't even BAD. But this is part of the caution when buying games thing - expect the worst. Trust your doubts, and never buy without gauging the opinion and criticism of a range of trusted advisors. And even then, never go over £15. £20 if you're not a stingebag.

If you expect the worst, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Never expect a game to be incredible, or to deliver any of the promises during any hype, however modest. It seems to be truer now than ever.

One of them. A better more cheap gaming rig you will not find.

Anyways, despite the sensible xbox related suggestions, I've ordered a slightly better version of what was recommended in that first link. That Alienware one looks like a serious bargain, but I had to have a new one built with my own hands, otherwise it would never feel like my machine.

Cheers, folks.
