I've just found a random job I would like to apply for, but the deadline is the 28th.

So does that mean I have to rush an application and email it tonight (so it's dated before the 28th), or can I tailor it a bit more and email it tomorrow?

Thanks guys.

You can still apply for a job on the closing date, as far as I'm aware.

Yep - closing date to me means "last day you can get an application in"

Unless it says apply before the 28th, I imagine you'll be fine.

You may not want to risk a job application on 'I imagine' though.

Just checked with Mrs The Egg who is an HR type and closing date means the last date you can get an application in.

Good luck with the application chap!

You could also be really cheeky if posting and date it the 25th of this month, and lob it first class tomorrow.

Then blame the postman.

Larks.

If they don't specify a time, I'd imagine it varies from place to place, and that for places that consider the closing date too late, it depends on how good your application is, and how many others there are. I generally assume closing to mean that the doors shut on that day, so you should get it in before then. However, I got my current (brilliant) job by handing my application in at 6:30am on the closing date.

So, get an early night, or prepare the red bull tanker.

Argh, you are worrying me again now!

Hmm, it say's
Quote:
closing date for the receipt of applications: 28th Jan...'

Hmm, well I'm going to try and send it at about 8am tomorrow morning (giving the GF a chance to read through it before work) so if it's there before they start work..,

I don't want to be a killjoy, and I could well be wrong. But if I'm right and you miss the deadline, you'll be kicking yourself in a week's time. You obviously want the job, so it's worth one night of writing and day of exhaustion.

If it comes in past the closing date, it gets filed in the bin.

Just make sure that your covering letter says 'Hi, I'm Dr Lave of Skeptobot fame. You must give me a job' and you'll be fine.

You could always ring them and ask if you can get it there for tomorrow.

Yeah, I emailed them my application - but I've noticed their site has been down since about 10 last night (the entire site mind - not just the HR bit).

So I'm heading over now to give them a paper copy as well. That way I figure I've got both an excuse to show my face, and shows I care about the job and that.

It's actually a public outreach job so I almost mentioned my blog. Decided against it in the end. A cathartic home of ill thought out rants is probably not a good thing to show an employer....

Plus they'd know where to look in future to check up on you... ;)

Good luck!

I don't think this is ever a bad idea, especially if you get to talk to the person handling the interview. If you ever do bounce off a receptionist, make sure the envelope is only labelled with your HR contact's name -- that way when they receive the application it'll be clear it was hand-delivered. It's a minor point, but you never know when the tiniest of factors can tip the balance.

the job I had before the one I have now I saw after the closing date

I rang HR and asked them if they would accept my application, they said yes, and the rest as they say was history.

so give them a call, and explain even if you ARE inside the closing date - it shows enthusiasm, interest and will to get the job
just use a good excuse for why you only just saw the advert etc and then you can also ask things like "when will you be interviewing etc or when will I hear back"

I like the story of the HR person getting all the applications in one pile, then throwing the top half in the bin, due to not liking "unlucky" people. But i can't for the life of me remember who told me that. Might have been Kern.

That sounds way too humourous and clever for any of the HR people I've dealt with.

Or, indeed, for Kern.
