We've not been on holiday since our honeymoon, and I feel that I really owe the wife the effort of getting off my backside and booking one for this year.

Thing is, I'm a bit of a homebody - and I don't really enjoy going on holiday that much. As such, I've got very little idea of where we should go*.

So, here is what I need - instructions on where I should go for a holiday. Activity and primarily beachfront holidays are pretty much out due for reasons I won't go into. I like pretty places.
Don't mind spending a decent amount of cash, but don't have ludicrous amounts to spend.

TELL ME WHERE TO GO, BEEX.

*Yes, yes - I should ask the wife where she wants to go. She might give the wrong answer though.

There's a big cinema there, and some shops and a snowdome.

If you haven't been to Prague, you should really go there. It's beautiful and the people are awesome. Plus beer is hellishly cheap.

Freeport should be somewhere that you go to pick up a load of biochemicals that need to be shuttled to Omicron Alpha without the attention of the GalactiCops.

A proper big holiday though. Reckon you could do 10 days in Prague? Also, things people build aren't pretty.

Freeport bonus - you fly out via Miami, so you could do a few days looking out for Big Willie.

Probably not. I concede.

Fly to America. Hire car. Start in Yellowstone Park, drive down to North Rim of Grand Canyon. Fly home. For the bit in between Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, don't book accommodation. Just drive until you don't want to drive any more each day and find somewhere to stop. Proper road trip. Best.

That does sound brilliant. I was going to suggest the US next, but as I haven't been there yet I couldn't really justify it.

Many years ago (in fact, it's 10 now, cripes), I would have gone to HI with the MrsA at the time and her family for 3 weeks. Had her sister not passed her Uni Exams. Which she did. The bitch.

The Czech Republic is a lovely country. Go to Cesky Krumlov - beautiful. Then Pilsen and Budweis for the breweries. My 10 day tour of Czech was one of the best trips I've ever done.

Constructed things can be very pretty indeed, you big wrongful bag of wrong. Are you sure this isn't Mr Chris posting under your name?

If you want a holiday for 10 days involving no activities, beaches and low on man-made structures then I'll concur that maybe some kind of American road trip is a smart idea.

Venice? Maybe throw in some more of Italy if you don't think there's 10 days worth there.

You could move your 360 into the bathroom.

Um, dunno about holidays really as I find beach holidays quite dull. America is huge with plenty to see and the people are genuinely very friendly, so I'd second the road trip one.

Is your version of HC into horses like mine? Then a horse riding holiday of some kind, either in the states or Andalucia or somewhere else.

Whale spotting in the Arctic

Safaris are quite reasonable if you go before April - they're also not >100degf as well which would be a bonus.

There's always lots to do in Italy, from fantastic art to great food to beautiful lakes - blimey, stick to the northern half and you could do maranello and drool over the exotic machinery as well.

Hell, some kind of driving holiday through Europe would be good as well.

Orkney. Seriously. Drive up through the highlands, stop off at some of the distilleries. Catch the ferry over and it is an amazing place.

I hear Iceland is pretty cheap at the moment. (Cue supermarket/Katona gags.)

I went to Lake Garda in Italy the other year, it was really beautiful. Not beachy at all. I would highly recommend the cablecar at Malcesine as well. Hotels can be a bit pricey but eating out is so cheap, especially if you stick to the local meals of pizza, pasta, ice-cream and red wine :-) When we went we stayed in a campsite and I can say they are nothing like ours, loads of room and hardly any rain!!! Be careful with time of year though try not to go end July/beg August, its when the Italians, Germans and French have shutdown and the traffic is horrific.

Other recommendations though would be Cyprus, either North or Southern mountains. Andorra may be nice but I'm not sure how easy to book it is outside of ski season. And another of my faves would be the countryside areas of France, although France can be more expensive for eating out.

Lots of great advice there folks, thanks.

The two holidays we have done recently are Scotland and a Kenyan Safari, so those are out for now (but both definitely destinations to revisit). I'm put some vague plans around everything else and see what's there.

Pliss - is Hawaii worth it without the beaches?

Yes, did that.. 2 years ago, it's pretty neat. Also went on to Shetland and saw sea birds and otters and abandoned cold war radar installations and abandoned WWII installations and a burning viking boat festival and everything.

YES! On Oahu you have Pearl Harbor, Pali and all the inland mountains and that. But for the best stuff, make sure you spend a bit of time on the the Big Island. Mauna Kea (with observatories up at 14,000 feet) and Volcano National Park are most awesome. Especially as Halema'uma'u is still erupting, so you might get lava flowing into the sea at Kalapana.

You can get suite rooms for about 40 quid at the moment.

A second for both Dubrovnik, really nice city and area with beaches and islands and city stuff, 10 days, maybe not.

Last holiday I did was Florence for a few days then out to Luca which is a really ace walled town with loads of vineyards and stuff to do in the area.

I had a really nice time in Köln in Germany. It might not be an obvious destination, but there's tonnes to do, and it's fairly cheap to get into a properly nice hotel (I recommend the Hilton - Das Ice Bar (attached to it) is fantastic).

We didn't go to the big island, but it gives us incentive to go back. I'd love to see the lava flow. Personally I preferred Maui to Oahu, maybe because it was quieter. There were a lot of excursion around there that weren't beachy. I loved the Hana road trip, seeing the scenery change from lush tropical foiliage on one side to the more weird volcanic part. Great views over the island on the way up the volcano there, and there was the Iao needle and eerie valley.

We took a day trip to one of the smaller islands (lanai) but there wasn't a lot to do there. If I got the chance to go back I'd want to spend more time in Maui and the big island.
