I got an email from my friend today with this in. Apparently it was said by the Aussie PM.

Quote:
Prime Minister John Howard - Australia
Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.

Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques.
Quote: 'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians'.

'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom'. 'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!'

'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.'

'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.'

'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom,

'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.'

'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.'

Right or wrong at least the man has the spine to speak his mind. And at least it has some substance behind it rather than the old American "If you don't like our country you can just geddout"

So I take it he's now joined the aborigines? After all, it's the immigrants who must adapt...

That's a mighty fine point you have there.

Note that Howard ain't PM any more. He even lost his own seat as an MP last election (2007), when the Liberals got quite a beating.

What an ignorant cunt. Australia was founded by mass murder and imperialism, not by naturalisation and respect for local values. Everyone's a fucking immigrant, and it's no more "OUR COUNTRY" (read: "MY COUNTRY") than it is theirs.

I am not racist but I hate Australians.

Their illegal immigration policy does have some merit though.

Did anyone actually bother to read that Snopes link? In particular the bit where it points out that the accreditation to Howard is bullshit.

Although he hasn't put it particularly well, he mentions Muslims who want to live under Sharia law. As long as they're living in any country, they should have to abide by their laws, imo.

However, as has happened here, the uses of Sharia law have been misquoted, and ends up with ignorant fucknuts running around shouting "They are trying to change the laws of the country to suit them!!!!" when it isn't the case.

Quote:
Lord Chief Justice Lord Phillips said sharia ideas could be used to mediate marital or financial disputes.
(The sun - yes I know but ti was first google result and had the quotes I wanted)

And..

Quote:
The judge said Dr Williams was not being radical when he advocated “embracing sharia law in the context of family disputes”.

But the Lord Chief Justice ruled out the possibility of sharia courts sitting in this country or deciding penalties.

He added that physical punishments such as flogging, stoning and cutting off of hands would not be acceptable.

Lord Phillips said: “There is no reason why sharia principles, or any other religious code, should not be the basis for mediation or other forms of alternative dispute resolution.

“However, any sanctions for a failure to comply with the agreed terms of mediation would be drawn from the laws of England and Wales.”

No, but tossers like to believe it, as it is a useful way for them to justify their racist beliefs, then claim that they know some Muslims who are OK as they are 'moderate' so that's OK, as they aren't racist after all and once, even invited a nigger around to dinner.

That doesn't surprise me at all. What is surprising me is that the good people on here seem just as determined to believe it for some reason.

It's because the link doesn't open up a new tab, it redirects people away from the site, so they are loathe to click on links to read them.

It's not possible for us (or anyone) to force a link into a new tab.
Don't you have a middle mouse button?

The Australian equivalent (well, sister party) to the Tories is called the Liberal Party of Australia. It's not "liberal" in the North American sense we tend to use in the UK these days, more based on classical liberalism. That's rather an historic name more than anything else though, although you could argue that the modern Anglo Saxon brand of conservatism is very much descended from classical liberalism as it is Toryism, but hey, that's another discussion.

(Incidentally most if not all "liberal" parties in Europe are centre-right and kinda Thatcherite. The centre-left brand of liberalism is technically called social-liberalism, as it's supposedly based on radical liberalism mixed with some aspects of social democracy.)

Thanks for clearing that up, and mad props for using 'an' before 'historic'. If only the rest of the English-speaking world would speak proper like.

It's not, but some people think it is for some reason I've never understood. "An hour" I can understand because "hour", phoenetically, starts with a vowel sound; "historic", however, does not.

Myp/kalmar: "I have a hypothesis" or "I have an hypothesis"?

As yes - "an honor" makes sense because of the vowel sound.

I've only really skim read this thread, but there is something to be said for: "When in Rome..."

If you move to another country you should make an effort to fit in, that's not to saw you should abandon everything your old country left behind, but you should make an effort to understand the customs and etiquette of the place you are moving to. Equally you shouldn't expect the people already there to understand your customs and should not take offense if this happens.

How do you square that with the Australian government's shocking treatment of the Aboriginals though, and indeed even today, many Ozzie's casual racism towards them?

I've personally overheard Austrailians speaking in a pub and was deeply shocked by the things they were saying. I know a few people that have been there and reported the same thing; Bill Bryson talks about it at length in Down Under.
