It's also of course indirect confirmation the 80s generation are now old.

It was a lovely calm show with him on it. Most art shows now are too hyperactive. What a legend.

A picture I painted of a lighthouse, with cotton wool clouds, was shown in the gallery of Hart Beat when I was about 6 or 7. Tony Hart said that the fluffiness of the clouds made the picture look very realistic and eyecatching, and that the red and white stripes of the lighthouse really stood out against the dark blue sky and waves. This is very sad, he seemed genuinely nice.

Art shows are more lively now, Nirejhenge - brighter and more colourful. I don't know if this is necessarily a bad thing as most children's TV is and Hart Beat would seem rather dull alongside most other kids TV. Art Attack is a great show, though, and I guess the most 'hyperactive' art show presenter is also, sadly, no longer with us - Mark Speight, who was loud and very active, but also very good. he should really have caried that show alone when he was alive becase Kirsten was a dud.

Anyway, sad news about Tony Hart. I bet Morph is very sad.

Sad news indeed. He always seemed genuinely interested in the art people sent into the gallery, and was always fun to watch the big projects he did at the end. He'll be much missed.

Another sad loss.

I suppose it happens to us all in the end.

Unless I do something spectacular, I don't think I'll make the bbc and have threads on forums about me.

Shame

I just watched some clips on youtube, it's a good 20 years since I've seen that show and the first time I've seen it in colour. They really don't make them like that any more - TV shows or TV presenters.

Ah, bugger. Although I possess zero artistic talent whatsoever, I always used to watch Hartbeat. Because I liked Tony Hart and Morph.

Chas was my fave.. Mainly because he was so pissy all the time.

I always used to like his drawings he did when he was showing you techniques you could create yourself if only you had a quarter of his talent.

Great guy, sadly missed.

I'll always remember Tony Hart demonstrating (via an operator) Quantel Paintbox in the late 80's.

Sad news, but he had a good innings really.

I loved Hartbeat. I loved drawing when I was a kid, especially armies of hedgehogs in power-armour with guns. RIP Tony Hart. I never managed to build that giant carboard pyramid you demonstrated, but thanks for inspiring me to try.

I'm saddened, though he did use to freak me out with his black eyes.

Looked like a lovely man, and there seems so few, just as much mourning for loveliness but even more so for his inspiration and talent.

The idea of watching an art show on a black and white television sends me into fits of giggles, for some reason.

I loved that man! His voice was so soothing mum used to let me and Rae watch him and we'd have our crayons and stuff out trying to copy him, he was bloody brilliant!
