Can someone tinker with SCIENCE and ensure that when I click on a URL in this forum that it opens in a new tab, or browser window. At the moment, when I click on a hyperlink it whisks BeeX away and loads that web site into the same window. It's really annoying.

If your mouse has a scroll wheel that you can click, you should be able to middle-click a link and have it open in a new tab.

I'm pretty sure this was discussed at length in the beginning. Personally I prefer links away from a forum to open in a new tab but I've just got used to middle clicking in this particular forum.

I naturally right click a link and open it in a new tab but I agree with Sir Hugh.. It would be nice to save me those 2 clicks.

Problem exists between keyboard and chair.

Hold down ctrl and click or middle click, non-existent problem goes away.

It would be very poor design to open tabs and windows I did not ask for.

I have to agree with Hugh. I keep forgetting to force it to open in a new tab. I am so used to other sites having that feature of click a link and open in a new tab or window

The obvious answer is to give people the choice. Have an option in your profile that says where you want offsite links to go (same window, new tab or new window)

They have the choice NOW. Press the middle button or the ctrl key or don't.

I have to say I'm used to just middle clicking for a new tab, on all websites, ever.

I'd prefer the site to open new links in a new tab; it's how every other forum I use behaves, and would be nice if this were the same.

On-site-links = same tab, off-site-links = new tab. That's the LAW.

Yes, that's all well and good, but then you have 2 actions to remember, one for internal links, and one for external links. I really don't see how a toggle (I guess it's not a toggle if it has 3 options) in the profile can cause any offense, those that want to use the middle button, or right click, or press ctrl can, and those that would like just to use the left button for all clicking (but still preserving the ability to have external links open in another widnow) can as well.

Or just, y'know, middle click when you want a new tab, otherwise don't worry about it. I'm not sure why cramming both options on to one button when you have three is supposed to be more user friendly.

The procedure on that page cannot be adopted into a per-user setting without some greater amount of mucking about. I doubt it's beyond Grim...'s capabilities, mind, so with some strategic nagging you might get him to do it (although you can get behind me in the queue, I want the site upgraded to Joomla 1.5).

Well personally I think we ask more than enough of Grim... than to spend some time coding an option that's available to everyone anyway just by moving their index finger 5mm to the right but if he's sufficiently bored he's welcome

There are scripts available that enable you to toggle from what is the sensible, non-hateful default (overwriting the parent) and opening links in new windows. Wrenching control of the browser away by default, however, is the web design equivalent of putting babies' heads on spikes (if not as bad as resizing windows to full-screen).

I expect a GreaseMonkey/UserJS script could do this pretty easily, actually.

The first thing I did when I got the Mac was to dump the comedy keyboard and mouse and replace them with something decent. I now use the wireless keyboard and the Shiteymouse with the laptop.

I was pretty drunk when I posted this thread, so I guess this must annoy me quite a bit.

The fact is that over riding the parent feels instinctively wrong for me, especially in a forum where visiting an external website is a common action and not one that is intended to end the narrative. And especially especially because every other forum I use seems to act differently, marking BeeX out as the irksome one (even if this is technically 'correct' according to the architects of the Internet. Though to be frank, the architects may object to people tinkering with their designs, but if I want to build a new doorway through to another room in my house for my convenience, their opinion can get to buggery).

It would be acebest if users could toggle this as an option in their personal settings or something. I recognise it is a low priority request.

Also, I really meant 'open in a new tab', if that option is available. Opening a new window is almost as annoying as over riding the parent.

I wish my clients wouldn't ask me to make external links open in a new window.

This'll make your browser open any external link in a new tab, while keeping the forum one as it is.

Works in Opera, and should work in Firefox's GreaseMonkey too.

It isn't—that's down to how you've defined the options within your browser. For example, Firefox enables you to 'force' new windows to open in tabs. However, you cannot control or over-ride that behaviour via scripting.

I already have the 'Pages should be opened in a new tab' setting enabled in Firefox, but it doesn't always work for some reason.

Sir Hugh, if you are using FF, get the Greasemonkey extension. If you are using Opera, add it to your custom js directory.

Go here in Firefox, and install the GreaseMonkey add on.

I've edited the link above to automate the install process for GreaseMonkey, so once you've installed GreaseMonkey and have the little monkey icon running, you can click the link and it should sort the rest out for you. Let me know if it doesn't work...

Hmm. It works perfectly well in Opera...I don't use Firefox, perhaps an actual Greasemonkey user can take a look at it.

With Opera and Firefox with no greasemonkey installed, the link in my sig opens in the same window for me.

The script is/should be valid, as it works in Opera. It's either a case of GreaseMonkey using a different syntax or I'm doing something that it hasn't implemented.

That's a brilliant vid, and worth watching all the way to the end if not just for the Sudoku killer headline.

Sites deciding they want to open things in new windows all the time pisses me off, as Dudey has said if I want a new tab I can ctrl+click or middle-click. If I forget, I can go back and do it properly (or just read the page there and then).

I actually like that this forum (and way of the rodent, for another example) don't override the default AND ACEBEST behaviour.

I've always been of the view that any links I follow off this forum are temporary, and I will be returning to the forum to carry on reading. As such, I prefer them in a new tab. Not enough to really give a shit, mind.

Well exactly, there are 3 possible workarounds, the HARDEST of which involves one extra click.

That makes it a non-problem.
