Never seen the appeal myself.

I enjoy World of Warcraft, but don't play it much. Haven't got a character above level 25. I don't sub, I just get point cards when I have a hankering to play it. And I've had one sitting in the boot of my car since July.

I have seen a few people go to brink with these monsters. I think a combination of constant, tiny rewards and escapist atmosphere is perfect to suck in the addictive, social awkward type.

i also don't see the appeal. For example, RPG should be immersive for me (as nerdy as that may sound). Millions of people running around doing the same thing over and over doesn't seem like a credible world, even in the land of fireballs and thunderaxes.

Oh, EvE is. You develop your own reputation and the like and once things re lost, they are lost forever.

I don't like the idea of having a virtual job. At least in traditional video games, you're the hero/chosen one/wrong guy-right time

i also dislike the idea that the better player is the ones with more hours played. I love RPGs but i just fail to see the competitive aspect of it when there's no skill involved (and don't argue with me on this)

I had three months in City Of Heroes. I got to play a posh female cyborg vigilante armed with two fencing swords who had frickin' lasers for eyes (battlecry "DIE, PROLETARIAN SCUM!"), had a lovely time and now have not the slightest inclination to return.

I like MMORPGs where there is enough to do outside of the fighting that it means that you don't ever need to be a high level - I used to play Star Wars Galaxies for a while, and would spend days decorating houses - there was so much depth to it that it was completely fantastic fun.

I used to play WoW but would invariably end up soloing as I simply wasn't prepared to play it as much as others that I would group with. And there comes a point when you're soloing on WoW when you realise that, really, you could just stick on Oblivion and do all that without having to pay for a subscription.

EVE sounds both wonderful and hateful at the same time for someone like me, who absolutely loved Elite, Frontier and First Encounters.

Why would anyone dedicate so much time to something so repetitive that didn't make them any money or seemingly bring about any pleasure?

They're largely just shit games that keep you coming because of the misguided belief in the social aspect, and the desire to be better than other people and thus show off to them.

Ask Gaywood (or Myfinger) about me and Neocron... the hours I spent running around in the sewers, stabbing at swarms of bees with a knife.

Yeah... I figured real-life practice would help me in game.

Honestly, though. Trying to stab individual bees out of the air with a shiv... it doesn't get much better/more pointless than that.

Dav - do you mind if I edit out the apostrophe from the thread title? It's annoying me. I can add it to Shin's stockpile, if you like.

Certainly, it was written in haste during the shitstorm a few hours ago. I hadn't noticed ;)

I object to this strongly. We need to keep accurate records of this apostrophe catastrophe, you jackbooted facists.

I like my virtual job. It pays actual money.

I've played a few MMOs. Currently I just play WoW. I'm in a guild that was formed for some people to hang out with each other. A lot of the others do dungeons together and stuff but I don't usually group with anyone, though I have a friend I'll play together with when we feel like it. WoW is casual gaming for me, I play it while watching TV. In that sense it's less time consuming than playing XBox, where I can't do much else. I don't grind in WoW, I mooch around doing quests, so it's no different to any other game that ultimately comes down to "click this, this and this to do that to them". Like all offline games, too. So I might "play" WoW for three hours in an evening, but that's a fair amount of sitting afk while watching something on tv, or talking to someone, or watching youtube links.

Yeah, I wouldn't count that as a virtual job - it's as real as my job, which on the face of it is just dicking about on computers all day, too.

Sorry for being a bit off-topic but I'd like to make a random prediction that console MMO's will acually get a bit popular this year with All Points Bulletin, The Agency and Huxley are scheduled for release this year. I say huxley but I havent seen anything of that for years.

Yup. But being bolshy towards myself there, for some reason. I need to improve on the internet bolshy lark, I've got the RL one down fine - which is odd, since for nearly everyone else it seems to be the other way round.

And the only reason I have posted here is because we have broken the Fallout 3 thread again.
