<serious>

No, because when I use it, it's to conjure up the reader's eye a pub filled full of the stereotype, making it easier on the reader (see, also :gangsta pub, Westwood's Posse). It's a lazy way of describing somewhere. I suffer for my art.

When the word is used, often bu the media or others, it absolutely STINKS of class elitism, something I really dislike. Especially because those that often sue it, aren't so great themselves.

To be fair, given that you drink there, it's clearly not elitism on your part.

If one is awesome and genuinely inherently better and more worthwhile than most people, can one use it then?

Why do you find it abhorrent, out of interest?

It's a word that seems to have quite a MaliAble meaning.

This topic was next to the Britney topic.

Now I can't get "Hit me baby one more time" out of my head, which has to be considered rather inappropriate.

I think it's probably okay to hit Baby P now. It's dead, so it wouldn't notice anymore.

In fact, I wonder if that could be a remedy for all this pent up anxiety and angst that the general public feels nowadays. Get a fresh tramp corpse and prop it up in every major town centre, and allow people to beat it and stab it as much as they like. Preferably while howling. Replacing the corpse when the old one's gone runny, obviously. You could even dress the corpse up in the latest fashionable bogeyman costume. Or just nail a sign onto it's hand saying "I AM AN PEADOPHILE" or "I AM AN BNP". Whatever takes your fancy.

As far as I am aware, it is illegal to do shit like that to dead bodies.

Yer a wrong'un, Dimrill.

I used to work in a butchers (many moons ago) where they often had a pigs head hung in the meat locker, purely for the purpose of mutilating to release aggression. I never did it, I might add.

Funny, I never considered 'Butcher' to be one of life's more stressful jobs. Surely taking a cleaver to a fresh corpse is a release in itself?

It's nervouspete I feel sorry for. In every library they have a huge dictionary in a special room that they can go and stamp on and scribble on and shit.

Oooh, far from it. Working 12+ days doesn't help, and you can't imagine how insane it gets over Xmas. I was on "Turkey Duty" the weekend before Xmas once *twitchshudder*.

Also, every slaughter-man I've ever met has been a fucking psycho. Killing things all day, everyday, seriously messes with their heads.

My brother wanted to be a slaughter-man, but he was a bit too willing. He said he would work whatever hours were necessary, including, if he had to, taking work home with him.

What the fuck do they think this petition will accomplish? The persistant media shit storm has put as much pressure as it was ever going to on social services, jesus. Fuck off, you people.

Social services: most thankless of all the many thankless public service jobs?

I find it easy to believe so. And I'm pretty sympathetic to nurses, teachers, and even the filth.

Oh, I thought that was simple:

- Social workers should not interfere with the way we're bringing up our kids
- Social workers should interfere with the way others are bringing up their kids

We will have reviews. We have stricter legislation, increased monitoring, and more boxes to be ticked. Despite all this, bad things will still happen.

How about a nice satellite tracking device installed into the anus of each child born from hereon in? The government would be able to track each child uniquely so that Puerto Rican man what done it can't ever take Maddie again.

So basically, more paperwork, more idiotic targets, and more time wasted on redundant formalities instead of actively helping people, right?

Heh, tempting.

Problem is I (as most) agree with their broad point. They've just gone to a lot of effort to achieve precisely squat and will in fact work against an effective social services.

I think Kern had it down so let's see it again...

My earlier post represents the dilemma ('nice cars') that this case presents to someone who's normal instinct is that government interference is a bad thing. Cases such as the 'satanic ritual abuse' accusations on a remote Scottish island that led to people being removed from their families because the state saw what it wanted to see are abhorrent, but then so is the idea that we should all just walk on by because 'we shouldn't interfere'. I guess it just shows that rules and tick boxes, which is the likely outcome of Baby P, can only serve to protect the organisation as they did everything they were supposed to according to the form: how to identify abuse possibly requires a trained eye and good judgement rather than a strict procedure that must be follows.

I get so angry about campaigns and protests about things that are blindingly obvious. The Sun are the worst for this. "Back our 'No To Knives' protest". Who are you protesting at, exactly? The public pro-stabbing lobby? Let's have a 'End Child Abuse' protest. Right, OK. We'll go and get some people who are in favour of child abuse to come and have an informed debate, shall we? Oh, we couldn't get anyone? Well, lets just shout about it lots then.
