We've heard about this before, but this bit was new to me:

Quote:
And the Tom Robinson Show on BBC 6 Music was also judged to have breached Ofcom's code after making up the name of a competition winner in September 2006.

A group - whose name was not given by Ofcom - had been interviewed on-air and unexpectedly offered listeners a pair of tickets to a gig.

Nobody phoned in and "in order to spare the band, the programme and the presenter any embarrassment, the producer invented a winning name, which was broadcast".

How excruciatingly hilarious.

Stupid, they could have at least got a friend to phone in!
Seems quite harsh though, no one lost out here.

The sad thing is that this shitstorm was kicked off by the newspapers in order to sell newspapers. Newspapers aren't about news these days, they are about campaigns which are designed to see newspapers.

Bash the BBC, bash Brand, Baby P, all dragged out to cynically sell papers b. Who cares if a couple of thousand "darkies" have died somewhere, some old tosser who used to be in a sitcom 30 fucking years ago is far more important.

And don't even get me started on The Mail. There was a very telling post on Popbitch a few weeks back where a Mail journo had admitted to a poster that most stories in the paper are designed to create fear or feed peoples prejudices. The journos have to specifically angle the story to match the Mails agenda.

Of course competitions shouldn't be rigged and people defrauded, but anyone who has worked in radio knows you have to bend the rules from time to time to make for better listening. "Let's go to lucky line 69" when the station only has 3 lines into the studio. I had a colleague who used his girlfriend as a stooge caller on competitions. She would always give the wrong answer. Reason was that once the listeners heard someone on-air giving a wrong answer they would call in. It would just kickstart things on slow days therefore making for better listening.

My cousin used to work for a radio station and had to do this. He used to say, 'People are like sheep-once one goes on, they all will,' meant in the nicest way possible I'm sure :)

Well exactly, just because of the Daily Mail, Russell Brand will now have to sign the Sachs offenders register.

:this: saved me a long post of my own. Especially on smaller shows - where your competition prizes are provided by a PR who won't get you copies of the music you need to play to have a good show unless their competition goes well. Most radio presenters don't want to have to deal with the insufferably dull public participation of phone-ins - Dave in Watford saying 'a few helloes' for longer than it took him to prove his ineptness in a pop quiz on the Ken Bruce show every morning is one example. But it has to be done. If Joe Public was any good on radio, he'd be doing it for a living.

Anyone who has ever tried to drum up interest in the West Midlands for a free copy of the Smashing Pumkin's guitarist's ponderous solo album will know what I'm talking about, though I think only myself and Neil Kulkarni have ever been in that position. Not as if the question was that hard either: "What band is Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha a member of?" - this when our rajar was very healthy for the Sunday night slot and the Smumpkins were the band of the hour. Ho Hum.

Oh and
"Hello?"
"Hi can you play Celine Dion for Amanda and tell her Jim loves her very much?"
"Well, this is a specialist music show, after midnight they take requests, but my next three tracks are by Belle and Sebastian, Bolt Thrower and Ben Folds, or there's some Squarepusher coming up if you'd like me to dedicate any of those? Failing that I'll get Claire to play it when I hand over, so you can have it at about five past twelve""
"Awwwwwwwwww, it's her BIRTHDAY! And we've got to go to bed because she's got work in the morning"
"Yes, but this station plays Celine Dion every hour of the week except these three hours of Sunday night. Do you have the celine Dion CD at home?"
"Yes"
"With respect I might suggest that if this is a matter of some urgency, you could always put the CD on and tell her you love her yourself...?"
"This station is fucking shit <click....brrrrr......>"

I never really settled in at commercial radio.

Commercial radio = crap phone-ins and wall to wall adverts. Only idiots listen to it (and, I suppose, traffic addicts).

I'm seriously glad we have BBC radio. Even Radio 1, fault it as much as you like, but they don't fill the time with phone-ins and lame competitions - they overdo the text-in stuff a bit but it's nowhere near as depressing and cringeworthy as listeners actually speaking on air.

But since R1 started being presented by the sorts who listen to R1, it has gone shit. Sarah 'fucking' Cox, Zane 'cunting' Low and is 'Tiny' Tim Westwood still going?

Wogan would fuck them all up with an eyelid if he were prepared to lower himself to their level.

Whaa? Sara is by far the best of their daytime presenters. You'd have to be a proper misery-guts not to be entertained by her whimsical banter.

Zane's show isn't to my taste exactly but at least it's listenable unlike dreary old Lamacq, and at least he's playing new, non-chart stuff.

Westwood no longer dominates Friday night, thank christ, but he is still there on some specialist show on a weeknight, if you fancy a giggle.

Poor old Jakki, a breath of fresh air when they kicked Gary Davies. Got "Bannistered" for no good reason frankly (officially she left of her own accord, but that's what they were all supposed to say). Bannister bought across Emma Frued from GLR and proceeded to do an earnest talk based lunchtime show. Everyone switched off.

And if Freud wasn't bad enough, Nicky "I'm a serious broadcaster" Campbell took over the afternoon show. Utter utter dirge.

Here you go:

Oh absolutely.

Jakki was a good presenter alright, and I seem to remember her show having some very good segments as well so obviously well produced and written.

Simon Mayo in the morning counts as classic radio in my book too.

A day in the life of Radio 1, in 1988:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=do2rwEVvYOM - Part 1 - Mayooo, Simon Mayooooooo!
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=O5cgYHhXR1E&feature=related - Part 2 - Butch and sincere, but what was the year?
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=7Epoh8Ygk9c - Part 3 - Oooh oooh, it's Gary Davis
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=h18pYNrQ7E0&feature=related - Part 4 - It's The Brooks

Warning, there are alot of pompous egotistical pratts talking about themselves in those clips.

I was going to post this as another example of the beeb lying but they have tidied up the report now - it was 'front page' on the entertainment section earlier :

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/bristol/7789466.stm

Wallace and Gromit leaked onto youtube and pulled down , had quotes like "dodgy cam" and said it came from a charity showing of the film and how it was disgraceful and would stop other charity showings ....

Despite the fact its was a perfect digital copy because its already been aired in Australia and is all over the torrent sites (I havent downloaded it because i'm waiting to see it on Christmas day)

It now doesnt really say much apart from the fact it was pulled from Youtube
