Split by Myoptika from Worst album thread, edited by Dimrill just now for seriousness, original post by Dudley, quote below from Mr Chris, I'd like to thank my parents for allowing me this opportunity to mod this thread. *holds aloft threadoscar* *bursts into tears*

Amusingly she's not even from London, let alone the right part of London.

Don't tell me you've got a cockerny accent Mimi!? That would skew my world view completely. I imagine you sound like Bjork, for some reason.

Nooooo, I've not got a cockerney accent! I just dislike the accent that she puts on because it makes my teeth hurt... Mostly because it makes me grit them... :p

Has Harrow been moved to Northumbria without me noticing then? There's nothing wrong with Kate Nash. She's a very talented singer-songwriter and her singing voice is not much more pronounced than her normal speaking voice. Lily Allen on the other hand...

Harrow isn't in London - it's in Middlesex.

Correct - it's also a London borough though, is it not? Counts as London for me. It's most certainly in the right area for an accent like that.

It's much better than Welsh people singing in American accents.

No, Harrow is my stomping ground, of sorts - no-one speaks like that. If you mean it is generally in the south east area, then, yeah - but the cockney accent is very different from the accent in my part of London, and Harrow is still a bit further out than here (my accent is not from around this area of London as I grew up on a farm on a small island, so my accent is different still, and quite different from that of my brothers and sisters).

It's debatable that Harrow is London (doesn't have a London postcode, used to be Middlesex) but regardless, she was born in Ireland.

Her singing voice is massively more pronounced than her normal speaking voice, just not massively more pronounced than the fake accent she puts on which, as Mimi points out, sounds nothing like Harrow.

You're right about the welsh --> american thing of course (and everything like it), that's what happens when someone has to be trained to sing rather than being natural and why people like Cerys Mathews and Amy MacDonald are ace regardless of whether you like their actual songs.

Let's not cunt up this thread with a Kate Nash argument. I am quite curious as to know how you know when she's putting on a fake accent or not - you must know her or something.

Or that's the way it seems to me. I know a few people from Ealing and Hounsllow way.

Again, I think you're getting confused with Lily Allen. She's all posh-like when she lets it slip. I've heard loads of interviews with KN and she just sounds kinda suvvern like (a bit like me).

I'm confused as to why you want to know how people knw her accent is fake or not, now.

I actually know someone whose husband works for her - she has a general London accent, but not a cockerney one. She's supposed to be harmless enough, but 'clueless' as he put it. She also has been on TV - she will speak in her cockney sparrah voice for so long and then just revert back to her more natural accent when anyone asks a question she wasn't expecting.

Also, Lily Allan is a moron, but I don't think people are confusing the two girls.

I'm really, really not, although I accept she's far worse than Kate.

To be more helpful, can I suggest Georgie Carter as an alternative.

I've split this out because arguably it was irrelevant to the Worst Album thread.

See this is the kind of modding I don't like.

It now looks like I started a thread, which I didn't.

It now puts a post I had deep in a thread right in public view.

And there's the addition of a "hilarious" title and sub title I didn't write but there's no indication I didn't.

Plus it was perfectly fine in the thread it was and had come to a natural conclusion. Are we really going to be raped by the thought police for staying half a nano-inch off topic?

This is the kind of modding I like. I like it because it helps me to find relevant things. Though the subtitle really oughta be 'split from 'blah' by 'whoevermod''

The splitting I'm not fond of, but understandable. I don't like the de facto attributing of crap comedy to me or the implication I started the thread.

At minimum it should have a "straight" title and a very big bold mod comment in the first post.

Oh FFS.

This really didn't need to be split out, you know. AT ALL.

Half of the joy of WoS before the Stalinist purges was that threads could wander wonderfully off topic and you could go from, say, the latest Harry Potter book to an argument about the relative merits of 90s indie music and KISS. And, you know, learn stuff. Like how good "God Gave Rock And Roll To You" was.

I don't like this sort of thing. -73%

Mr. Chris you are wrong and mad, because Whatever Else You Can Say, Stu Ran A Tight Ship and he Would Not Have Stood for This Sort of Thing.

So that's you told.

Hello chaps! Sorry, I've been out all evening, so I haven't been able to offer a case for the defence.

Firstly, I'd like to apologise to anyone who has been offended by the split. I felt it was necessary at the time because we'd had a page of irrelevant crap about Kate Nash and I didn't want to piss on Grim...'s thread with it, especially as I was the main protagonist in that, but you live and learn.

I think we moderators have come in for a bit of stick this week, but you have to remember that we're only human and mistakes will be made. I myself have learnt today that people don't like crap comedy titles attributed to them. Cool - I've learnt from that mistake and won't do it again. Grim... probably won't be so heavy-handed when it comes to resizing images, etc.

Running a forum like this is a learning process for all of us, and it's much harder to run a democratic place like this than WoS is run by Stu, for example. We are not going to be able to please all the people all the time and all I ask is for a bit of patience and understanding while we get settled in. If we're doing something wrong then we obviously want to know, but maybe a quiet word in our ear is a better way than kicking off in public? I dunno, I just feel like I'm waffling now, but I wanted to get that off my chest.

That's it, really. I want to hear more about Bill & Ted and Kiss now.

She doesn't sing with a cockney accent anyway, not a genuine one. There's a bizarre accent that seems to have sprung up in the last few years - I put it down to posh kids leaving home, moving into Hoxton, Shoreditich etc and trying to ape what they see as the native accent when they're singing. Why? Well, who wants to listen to a load of posh kids? They've got nothing to say, they haven't struggled in life and they don't have any interesting life experiences. Subconsciously they know it.

I haven't heard any of Cerys' solo stuff, but I'm still appalled by the comparison. Tanya's solo stuff is increasingly like fragile, beautiful songs of the milk maiden off in the early morning dew. Apart from when she decides to rock out quite convincingly, which she doesn't seem to want to do much these days. Gorgeous stuff. Her 'Beautysleep' album is I think her 'best' or at least the most rounded so far.

I haven't heard any of Cerys' solo stuff, but I'm still appalled by the comparison.

If you had, you wouldn't be. They're in the same ballpark, as Cerys has gone all soulful and (shhh) sort of Country. It's the post booze and drugs phase, apparently.

She's just wonderful.

If you like her, you'll like Emiliana Torrini.

Actually, I need to put them on the list after more April March and Astrud Gilberto.

Kate Nash: The two big singles from her album are great the rest ranges from mediocre to plain embarrassing. It kind of reminded me of something from around 1992 for some reason maybe it was the production or something. Whatever, it was very clearly rushed and required the help of several 'professional' musicians to try and bump the album up to a decent length.

The accent thing is odd, clearly someone in the Brit School or her management have thought that just writing songs and being a woman isn't good enough so let's create a crazy persona to go with it (see also The Kooks). It's not a bad thing; after all no one is constantly haranguing David Bowie for occasional putting on a cockney accent but when you combine this with the 'found on My Space' nonsense along with her completely fictitious claim that she wrote all of her songs in a matter of weeks after hurting her foot (!?!?) you do start to wonder just how manufactured this person is.

I see her as a completely manufactured pop act that has somehow managed to squeeze out some genuinely good songs along with some real shit. Whether see will be able to shrug off this silliness is something that time will tell.

:attitude:

I thought it was Lily Allen who claimed to be found on MySpace, despite having a famous father and already being signed to a record label.

Yes, Lily Allen claimed she was discovered through MySpace, but it became a fashion. Kate Nash was supposedly discovered there as well (link), or it's what he PR people generally put about.

Apparrently she never played the guitar until her fall down the stairs, which is supposed to be bunkum as she was studying guitar at some Performing Arts school, and then 'The Brits School, training people to win our awards!'. ;)
