Pole Position was chuffing awesome wasn't it? I used to really like that one.

Mysterious Cities Of Gold ftw, though. And I've got the whole first series of The Real Ghostbusters saved on my computer at home.

I spent the first part of this morning at Ecclesfield Police station identifying some recovered property (they found my plasma TV when they raided some scrotes house). There is a phrase that you know you are growing old when the policemen start to look young, well I can confirm said proverb, the CID office looked more like a 6th form common room.

It's 18 years since the GX4000 was released. A flop, but 18 years later it's still the only console that had a standard SCART socket on it therefore not requiring any proprietary cables to get the best quality picture.

Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, are you reading this? IF BLOODY AMSTRAD CAN GET IT RIGHT, WHY CAN'T YOU?

But yes, it was 18 years ago almost to this very day I went into Dixons to buy my GX4000. Crikey.

They did, the 360 and PS3 both have perfectly standard HDMI.

On the rare, unwilling occassions when I go into the Barfly in Cardiff, full of trendy students with pork-pie hats and Byronesque/raggamuffin Doherty/Brand hair, I feel incredibly aged - like Howard Moon.

Fortunately, upstairs Dempseys, The Point and Welsh Clwb I can quite happily dance like a loon.

Shut up all of you and stop disagreeing with me!

Most large screen TV's built after 1988 had SCART on it and it was certainly being rolled out on the portables in the early 90's (I have a bloody Bush FFS from 1993 behind me which has SCART on it).

As for the widespread comment, try buying a TV without SCART on it even today. It's a bloody widespread standard for this country. America counted for jack because the GX4000 was never designed to be sold into NTSC markets.

The GX4000 delivered RGB through it's SCART connector which was the highest quality option available in 1990.

In conclusion Amstrad rule and you suck. Nyah nyah can't hear you.

Yes, but SCART is shit now. HDMI is at least as standard as SCART was when the 4000 launched. Hell, my portable TV has it and that's an incredibly expensive (lie) Acoustic Solutions set.

Amstrad were hardly first anyway, multiple machines had perfectly standard RF when that was the best around.

And the 360 and PS3 deliver 1080P through it's(sic) hdmi connector, which is the highest quality option available in 2008.

I hardly noticed Sega, Nintendo, Atari or Commodore falling over themselves to provide a SCART out. My 7800 and Master System don't even have composite.

Yes, but Sony, Nintendo et al aren't making their consoles only for the European market, so they don't have european only connectors. If a console is capable of RGB, then it usually has an adapter for whatever output the console has.

It's been adopted all across Europe and other PAL territories. So that leaves you with North America and Japan.

Scart is great - a standardised connector for video, within which manufacturers may attach signals to pins in almost entirely random and non-interoperable ways.

It's been adopted all across Europe and other PAL territories. So that leaves you with 80% of the console market.

But your figures are quite incorrect as the GX4000 was never marketed outside of the PAL regions. Therefore I am quite correct.

I'm 99% certain that the first Sony PlayStation model sold in Japan (SCPH-1000) had generic video outs.

OK, Googled it, it had standard composite and S-Video outputs, but the RGB Scart output was only through a Sony proprietary output. Oh well.

Finally, someone who gets the point.

The GX4000 was pretty much unique at the time for letting you get the best quality picture out of it without having to go out of your way. My Megadrive requires a special cable, as does my Dreamcast and PS2. Jolly good if the new consoles finally have a standard connectors on them, but it's taken long enough frankly.

But, as has been laboured quite a lot, the best quality socket has never been standard over a console's sales area until now. It's only Amstrad's lack of popularity anywhere that made it possible.

Even now, the 360 has to have a multi out because it can support SCART, Composite, RF, VGA and component from one socket that way rather than have 12 billion sockets on the case.

One of the more bizarre features of the GX4000 was that it had two power sockets. One for 5 volt (from a CPC monitor) and one for 12 volt (from the supplied power supply).

So why not just bundle a 5 volt unit with the console to begin with, or just tell the monitor users to use the power supply that came with the console.

I now understand why I never heard of the GX4000 until recently.

You can have an xbox elite, today, with nothing but a HDMI cable from Argos and plug it right into your current LCD TV. Sorry if that's been said already, I just wanted to dogpile on the chinnywrongness.

The Elite even comes with an HDMI cable.

All the other 360s have the slot too.

Worse - it's French. Not reknowned for their well-adopted technical standards inventions, the French.

Like GSM?
