My general idea is...

Phase 1: Write reviews of Wii Ware games
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3:Profit! Break even.

I was thinking of having some kind of web page with a PayPal link as a 'tip jar' to slowly raise funds for more Wii points. Not intending this as a money-making venture, it's just a bit of fun on the side really.

Viable?

If it's just for fun and you're not thinking of making serious dough or anything, I can't see why not. How about starting off a free trial then charging a nominal amount thereafter? :)

You're going to need to toughen up a bit, Hero of Socialism, (if that's your real name).

Pointing out that someone is already doing it may not feel helpful, but it's valid feedback. Do you think you could add something special that would improve upon the 'competition'?

If it's a hobby site then who cares what anyone else thinks, just do it.

Or start a poll. Or something.

Also you said it was typical of this place, which isn't very nice. Or true. I see you have deleted that bit now. For some reason.

I can't really see the tip jar idea working TBH. If people can get stuff for free, they usually will (unless it's for chary-dee). Maybe you could do a 'suggested donation' like museums?

Ah, but I don't want to specifically charge for it, like any sort of subscription. Just if anyone wants to voluntarily Paypal me a quid or two at a time because they like the site, then they'll able to.

I know of VC-reviews and Wiiware World, but there Internet's big enough for more Wiiware reviews. Almost certainly won't be a website in that style, possibly just a blog page where I post the reviews whenever.

if you're not going to plow a lot in and not expecting a lot out, then go for it. I'm sure the fine inhabitants of this forum would help get the traffic up.

As we well know, charging for access to website content is a pretty crap way of making money. The best you can hope for realistically is a popular site with google ads. Google ads do earn a reasonable amount of cash assuming you've got the hits. PTS still earns a trickle without too much effort.

Fun fact: The most I ever made in a single day of google was $91 on the 27th April 2006, shortly after the website launched. Suffice to say I don't earn anything near that now. Not even $91 a month.

I never had intention to charge for access. I never wrote here that I did...

How would these Google ads work then? Please bare with me, I don't have a clue about the Internet, I just about can use a web browser.

Sorry I failed to see your above post re: not charging for it explicitly.

In a nutshell, you put Google ads on the page, the ads are targetted (google reads the text on your page and churns out relevant links) and if people click on them you earn a certain amount per click. Depending on what each click is worth (it varies) 15 or 20 clicks will earn you around $3 a day. Google pays out when your account hits $100, which for me it does every other month.

Now is a good time to be earning dollars, with the pound so mind-numbingly weak.

Don't ask, just do.

(Though asking is a very good idea. So... ignore the above. Except for the second half.)

I've long considered creating an XBLA website, as as far as I'm aware, there are no good ones out there. So my plan is, I'd make a good one.

How is this condescending?
You asked if it was viable, a link was posted showing that it is already being done, so is clearly viable. I can't click the link at work, so don't know the quality of this site, but if it is shite, then it shows there is room for improvement, if it is very good, then it shows that it is a viable option. :S

As for the actual tips jar aspect, I am not sure if that is actually viable. See Wikipedia, they have been asking for tips to support them for months now, they must get millions of hits a day, and they have only raised half their target. I haven't even read why they want the money.
Might you be better asking for Nintendo/Wii points, if you can give them away?

I wasn't meaning to be condescending chap, I just had little to add other than the link. I can see how it could be though, so apologies for that.

Their target is $6 million tho, and they have raised over $3 million, I don't think that's a good example!

Yeah, but comparatively, look how many hits they get. I don't know where to search for that info, but they must get millions a day.

I had thought of that, but I don't think you can. No, you can't. You can send VC/WW games as 'gifts' but you need to have someone on your contacts list, and I can't set that that up properly so that's no use.

Search for Wikipedia on Wikipedia?
