Mine (non xmassy) posting username, DavPaz, is just a contraction of my name, automatically suggested by Yahoo over 10 years ago, it just stuck...

So how did you guys come up with your fancy alter egos? And what do some of them mean?

Mien was my avatar in EvE.

Kovacs as I was reading 'Altered Carbon' at the time.
Caprios as there was a Capricorn book on my desk.

Mine is my name.

EDIT: Also, "Sir Hugh" is my Xbox profile name, because Hugh was already taken. Also, people often call me Mister Hugh, or Sir Hugh, for some reason. I think it's because I am superior. A girl once said I had a "noble manner". I told her I lived in a normal house like everyone else. Also, I am a tad pretentious.

ALSO.

A surprising number of people ask me this question, even in real life when they find out what my nick name is.

I'm continually baffled as to why they can't figure it out for themselves.

Original one was comicalgames, to help spam my website. After 'the ban' it changed to comicalgnomes, for the lols and to preserve the 'CG' abbrev.

I used Ace since forever on the internets. AceAceBaby is obviously a play on the song title of the awesome Vanilla Ice track: Ice, Ice, Baby.

Excuse me, I have to go wax a chump like a candle.

Here

Usually pick a username based on what I'm reading/watching/listening to at the time. So if it had been this week, I'd be known as either 'National Shite Day' or 'Joy Division Oven Gloves'*.

*Both of which I actually prefer to 'Sinestro'. Damn!

Mine's a deity in Bal-Sagoth's lyrical universe, worshipped by the Brotherhood of Dark Elucidation. I've no idea what the etymology of his name is supposed to be, except that I know the "-don" suffix generally means "tooth".

It's not geeky at all.

My nickname has been Mort since I can remember (as it's based on my surname). When I first had an internet account Mort was taken as a domain, so I chose Morte. True story, yes a dull one but a true one none the less.

Stolen from AP, and it fits with the whole secret cabal of spies and mercenaries thing. 'Thogar', my other name, which I'll get round to using at some point in the next three eternities, is merely a contraction of my real name. Hence why I mean to move onto it.

I always liked the name 'Septimus' from Alundra, until I discovered that it was also the name of a suicidal toff war veteran in Mrs. Dalloway.

Shin is short for The Shinobiyoru-which means 'Stalker' in japanese *grimaces*

http://www.eudict.com/?lang=japeng&word=shinobiyoru

I wanted to learn the japanese language when I was 14 or so and was trying to teach myself it-I sent off for tapes and the rest of it.
When I went to college I was famous for loving Alan Rickman and I did sketches about my eternal search for him for friends and such like and used the name 'Shin' as my comic name.

I have a lot of names I go by-but thought this was okay.

Either that or my writing handle of Katania Ella Morri/K.E.M but that was a bit long

Mine is an old IRC handle, originally "Sheepdeath2097" for reasons I can't quite remember...the 2097 is probably from Wipeout. That was shortened to "Sheepeh" following the ancient IRC traditions of replacing any "y" at the end of a word with "eh".

It's pronounced "Sheepy", but spelt "Sheepeh", in case you were wondering.

Way back in 1997/98 I was doing pen and paper roleplaying with friends where I had a character called Nire. The name itself was randomly created when naming an Octamed song but I used it for the character. Nire looks like my avatar. I started using the name on the internet but then started to find Erins who had reversed their name. So I needed to become unique. So I added the name of the world in which Nire existed. Which was Jhenge. Thus I became Nirejhenge.

Last time this came up, I provided a response of "My name is Dave. I am a man" or something.

However, I cannot find this in the search, so I cannot link to it.

What I did find in the search was Chinny and Dimrill talking about the colour of my shit. 8)

I chose mine after the mightest, most handsome and bravest pirate ever in Eve.

that, and it was a slight play on "malice aforethought".

Tsara Blue (XBox tag) is a contraction of "Tsara Bluebirch" who was another character of mine in EvE. She was in love with maliA and would do anything for him, but he never noticed. That, and pretending to be a girl was easier to get out of gatecamps when delivering ships.

My first Internet posting name was my own real full name, but I couldn't work the Internet properly and decided it was bad idea to write stuff under my real name.

So I became JC007, based on the name of rapper JC001 and, you know, James Bond. (Years later I got an email from JC001's publicist, saying that they'd seen my explanation of my name and that JC001 wanted to be JC007, but legal issues had prevented him releasing music under that name.)

After I while, I decided I didn't like hiding behind a pseudonym, so I started using my own full name online. I then added Rev. to the front, when I became a minister in the Universal Life Church.

And then some people stole my name to use on gay porn sites after I wrote some post on Usenet arguing with a homophobe. To this day sometimes gay porn turns up if you search for my name in Google. Today, for example -

Quote:
gay teen help -
Owen [MY SURNAME] - Why gay teen help acts are wrong. gay teen help. why pretend it isn't so? It is a beautiful homage to gay teen help and lesbian films and ...
www.[SITE NAME REMOVED].net/gay/g/gay_teen_help.asp - Similar pages -

Now, gay porn's fine if you like that sort of thing, but I don't want people searching for me online to get the wrong idea. And by this stage people online were calling me The Rev, so I changed my posting name to that.

However, some places have other Revs, so to avoid confusion I sometimes add my name Owen to the end of it. Here I think I may be the only Rev type person, but I decided to use the same name here that I used at the other place so people would know who I was.

When I first got online, every variation of my name had already been taken at Yahoo! (man, it’s hell to punctuate that at the end of a sentance). As fate would have it, a friend had described to me one of the many many ways of generating my Star Wars name only a couple of hours earlier, and because I’m a massive nerd and I thought it had sort've a ring to it, that’s what I ended up using as my email address, then as my forum name in various places, then as my Steam ID and XBox Live username, and now for my blog URL.

As I said. Massive nerd.

Hello, fellow ULCer!

I used to have a band called 'myopia' back in the day, but found out that there was another band with the same name, so tweaked it to something that no one else would think of. I then started using it as a forum name in about 1999/2000.

I remember hearing the nam Bluce Ree during an episode of The Incredibly Strange Film Show. The one about Jackie Chan.

They talked about all the Bruce Li, Bruce Le type imitators and it was Bluce Ree that stood out (and Bronson Lee).

Used it when I was on an old Killing Joke forum and used it for some music I did. Couldn't use it for Xbox Live though so I picked Peacesquid which was a one-off character from a three panel comic strip in a old skate/punk fanzine called Bugs and Drugs.

I originally had the gamertag 'myoptika' when I had an Xbox Live gold account for the Xbox 1. To recover it I had to provide the card details I registered it with, but as it was three years since I'd used it, I couldn't remember.

Yes, it's a Shooting Stars reference. I nearly went with 'myoptika-ka-ka', but it looks even more unwieldy. :)

-edit- Ironically, a few years ago I found out there's a little-known Spanish play called 'Myoptika'. Weird.

Wrote a couple of issues of a pop-punk fanzine called "Scary Sheep" in the late 90s (the title was a reference to a bonus track on the Mr T Experience's 'Milk Milk Lemonade' album that has a guy talking about being "badly frightened by a sheep". Precisely one person in the world correctly guessed where the title was taken from). Subsequently used the name as my online moniker. Flirted with using my real name online, until I realised it'd be too easy for current and potential employers to find out what I do all day if I used my real name on forums. Added 3000 because Scarysheep was already taken on XBL, and thought it made sense to have the same thing for my gamertag and WoS (then Beex) forum name. The 3000 was meaningless, but is probably a reference to Futurama I s'pose.

I was in the computer room of St Edmund Hall in Oxford Uni in 1997 and I was on the internet for literally the first time ever. I went on IRC and needed a nick; the first thing I thought of was Glyndwr, after the last true[1] king of Wales. I've always liked the sound of the word and it's amusing impossible for Americans to pronounce or spell. I used either that or my real name interchangeably for many years, then I got a PhD, and here we are.

[1]may not be true

One of the many reasons I want to travel back in time and beat the crap out of my fourteen year old self is because I used to post rubbish under my own name.

Kern isn't derived from Irish meadivel mercernies or a love of typography but merely a contraction of 'Kernow' - Cornwall for 'Cornish'. On another forum I had tried 'Oxkern' (based on the two places I consider home), but I prefer the one syllable version.
