Errrrm, yes... not that I'm getting desperate, or anything :S

Seriously, I've been thinking about it for a while now. Sans girlfriend for 2 years is starting to get annoying and casual flings getting increasingly vacuous... being the type of guy who finds it hard to meet girls I share much in common with, maybe something a little more drastic is in order?

So anyone have any experience of online dating sites? Any recommendations? Somewhere where I can meet intellectual, bizarre and interesting girls my age (29) and not just bored and horny housewives (eek). I was thinking Guardian Soulmates?

... and no, I'm not joining fucking facebook.

Embarrassed thanks.

The key to online dating is to remember this simple maxim: "The odds are good, but the goods are odd."

I've had a fair 'owd bit of success with the online dating. In my experience, OKCupid is the best of the lot as it's free but still has loads of users on there. I met Shin through Facebook of course :P

Can't say I've ever tried it, but loads of weirdos swear by it.

Having said that when I was 14 (man was I cute) I exchanged addresses with a girl on AOL which culminated in us meeting up about a year later.

Nothing much happened after that. Meeting was weird.

Still, 10 years later I added her to my facebook and we had a good laugh about it all.

I used freinds reunited dating, I had quite a few dates from there... beware there are 2 reasons why you online date.

You can't get a normal date because
1) Your job and social circle precludes meeting an eligable mate.
2) You are fucking weird and should not beallowed to breed.

I met lots of option 2s but quite a few option 1.

The last option 1 i met, is now my wife...

That would be good, I though Nemi was small-time but I saw a compilation book in waterstones the other day. It shocked me.

How do you meet new people through facebook anyway, I though it was just a friends re-united thing where cunts from school hassle you to be their buddies again (fuck no thanks).

Are their any online dating sites for people who are, let's say, a bit more interesting. Say geared towards people into art/music/travelling, not just reading the Sun and getting pissed at the weekend?

Is this a bad time to point out that you work at a uni with a union pub that is invariably filled with a) weirdos and b) hot women most of the time? Sheesh ;)

My sister met her boyfriend online (though I don't know if it was a dating site or some kind of chat thing). I never, ever would have thought that anyone could have started a worthwhile and lasting relationship meeting online, but four years later they live together, are hoping to get married and eventually have four children (I don't know), so it can work.

However,

My cousin actually joined an internet dating site. She's a tall, beautiful girl, and... well, I can't write the end of this sentence without being seriously mean about some of the people she met, so I won't, but, wow.

Congrats on it working out for you mate :) I'm fairly sure I'm an option 1 (some may disagree). I'm dead social and meet loads of nice girls, but very rarely do I click with anyone and wish to pursue anything more involved. Hence online dating might be a new/better option to try. Working in an IT dept, there are no prospects of meeting any women, let alone nice women, here :)

I met my wife on Deadjournal.com. It's not a dating site, but someone else I know on there has also married a girl he met there.

See my point in the first post about vacuous relationships. Tattoos and piercings are a mega hit with the 18-21 student types, but they're never keepers. God, I must be getting old if I'm getting sick of that!

I don't think I'd do any good on those kind of sites, I'd never manage to keep an online journal without feeling like a self absorbed prick (just me, nothing against most people who do).

I picked a bird up once as (No, not a chance you're telling that story - legal ed).

Just attend a lot of parties and be nice to people.

Or, behave like a total dick.

You can filter your search options etc..

I was on a few Direct Dating is also good, but I prefer FRD

I've been on Match.com for quite a long time. Absolutely no interest in me whatsoever. Apart from with fat middle aged women with 15 children.

I also agree with Pupil.

I thin she'd liek somebody tall. She really is quite tall (6ft 1" or 6ft 2") and she's kind, lovely, warm, sweet hearted, but men always shy away from her because she is so tall and has long, dark hair, she looks quite imposing. She looks quite like Nigella Lawson. She hasn't had a boyfreind in over ten years now, which makes me feel sad as I know she'd like to meet someone :(

Shamefully, I once turned down the advances of a girl because she was close to my height and would be taller than me in heels. She was really nice too. I apologise to the females on behalf of my gender

Tall ladies are not a problem for Mr. Zio - Former Lady Zio is 5' 9", so not too far off my 6' height. Does she have a problem with guys who are six months away from having a baby with another ex-girlfriend? :p
