1. Burnout Paradise - The sheer amount of time I've played it online and off, plus 2 massive free updates. No contest.
2. Fallout 3 - Slow starter, but ended up bumming it hard.
3. Fable 2 - Too short, but bostin all the same.
4. Gears of War 2 - Co-op with Dave funtime.
5. Mirror's Edge

Hmmm if putting together a shortlist for my games of the year it would be:

GTA IV
Fallout 3
Dead Space
Burnout Paradise
Boom Blox

I think I am going to have to wait until next week to say because AC is out next week. There have been so many games I have enjoyed this year though, I'll have a sit down and think about it.

Fifa 09
GTA IV
Burnout Paradise
Bully: Scholarship Edition
Fable II

I suspect Fallout 3 would sneak in there had I played it yet. I also expect I'll be changing this list daily until the end of the year.

1) Fallout 3. Easily the best game I've played this year, the fact I've managed to sink 70 hours into it is a testament to that (and the fact that I'm single at present)

2) GTA IV - Started out amazing and I sank a lot of time into this too, but started to get old near the end. The only mainstream GTA since GTA III that I've not bothered finishing.

3) Mirror's Edge - Frustrating as fuck, but really nice and atmospheric and genuinely trying something different. When it works, it's very, very good.

4) Guitar Hero World Tour - Been playing this with a very lovely friend of mine who I hoping may well soon join our ranks as one of our too-few lady members. Great game, but I can't do the drums on it.

5) Gears Of War 2. I was very 'meh' about the first one, but playing the Horde mode on co-op round a mate's house these last few weeks has been a great laugh. His fiance may disagree, however.

Hmm...

MotoGP 08 - For the first time since 04, an actual MotoGP game with more than 1/4 of the bikes in.
Fifa 09 - Long overdue reinvention, the first one I've actively liked since 03.
Geo Wars 2 - Top XBLA action at a sensible price.
Rez HD - Glorious version of all time classic. (Yes, it was January before anyone asks ;))

DUDE! It IS 2007. You've had an accident and been in a coma. All the rest was just a dream. That you mentioned to someone and we decided to cruelly run with it.

In no particular order:

Rock Band / Rock Band 2
Six months after release I was still playing it two or three times a week. I can't think of another game that's appealed to me, my wife, my daughter and both my sons, much less one that (most of) us can play together.

FIFA 09
Flawed but brilliant. Can't wait for what Be A Pro mode will have become by about FIFA 2011.

Fallout 3
Collect-em-up + headshots + most evocative gameworld I've seen since... um, well, since GTA IV actually, but it really has been an unusually good year.

Geometry Wars 2
Ferociously addictive and utterly gorgeous.

GTA IV
Didn't like the new car handling model. Didn't like being called every 20 minutes to take some aggravating social parasite to play a terribly-implemented game of pool. Didn't like how bloody difficult it was to see where I was going at night. Didn't like the paucity of clothes on offer. Still one of the best games of the year.

Still some games out there to play that I know I'll ZOMG over, but from what I've played:

1) GTA4 - My first GTA! Excellent story driven epic adventure with strip clubs and Eastern Euroboys.

2) Dead Space - Just love this, right up my street. Eeek! Wow! Eeeek! Fuck! Phew! Eeek! Cor!

3) Oblivion - Only played it this year so fuck you all, it's in my list. Pixie questing has never been so good

4) Guitar Hero 3 - If it only had Number of the Beast it would still make it into the list.

5) Burnout Paradise - Bezt of the Bezzies (It would have been CoD4 but Perkies pissed all over it)

----------

The oh yeah list: Rez HD, Geom Wars 2, FFTA2,

---------

Nice to see no-one mentioning braid.

GTA IV : Even though the very last action I take to reach the magical 100% will likely be to shoot a pigeon that sits there and doesn't move rather than a group of gangsters after my blood. Talk about anticlimax.

Burnout Paradise : I haven't played this as much as most people despite buying it after release, but it deserves to be in the list because it does things different even though Criterion could have just gone the "slight upgrade from the last game in the series" route.

I haven't really played enough of the other 2008 releases I've got to fell them worthy of GOTY status yet.

Oh dear, I've struggled. But going by what I've played most recently (and therefore hardly a true reflection of the year. I am fallible).

1) The World Ends with you. I liked it.
2) Ninjatown. Yes! Simple, really shouldn't be in the top 5 but I did play it a lot and recommend it.
3) PicPic
4) New International Track and Field
5) Wii Fit. I have stomach muscleage (a bit)!

In no particular order:

1. GTA IV. Absolutely astonishing. I'm only now running out of things to do (just a few jumps and cars-by-text left, then it's just the races, multiplayer and pigeons) but it is the most astonishingly well realised living city to date.

2. Fallout 3. I can't think they could have done much more, to be honest. A little rough around the edges here and there, but taking my time to explore the world has really brought the legendary Fallout atmosphere back to life like it did way back on Boxing Day 1997 when I first played the original game proper.

3. SBK08. Outrageously fast racing thrills!

4. Burnout Paradise. Just plain outrageous thrills!

5. Unreal Tournament 3. Thrill, varied, crazy shootery. With dark walkers and tentacles and hoverboards!

1. Geo Wars 2. Hated the first one but love this. Pure arcadey fun and I keep playing even though the gamerscore has dried up.

2. Euro 2008. Somewhat overshadowed by Fifa but this had more impact and was a touch better in my opinion.

3. Bully. Hated GTA4 but loving this. Mainly cos of the music.

4. Rainbow Six Vegas 2. Does co-op so much better than Army of Two did.

5. Omega Five. Um... shooter. All retro like.

if SKATE was this year then crowbar that in at 4.

Shit yeah! Omega Five was Jan 08, thought it was 07.

How many games of the year are we allowed to choose?

In a few weeks, I'll collect all the games in this thread up into a list, we'll split it into a few categories, and we'll do some polls to find the offical BeeX Games of the Year. I think we should stick to games released in 2008, just to be fair.

My choices:

  • Rock Band -- can I put "Rock Band 2's interface with Rock Band 1's songs added too"? No? Well, I have to put RB1 then, purely for the time it has sucked up this year. It taught me to look at music differently and has made me seriously consider a real drum kit. What more can you ask for?
  • Fallout 3 - no question, it has to be in there. As MetalAngel says, not perfect, but so damned breathtaking.
  • UT3 -- I loved this when I first played the PS3 version, feeling that it lacked only opponents. Nine months on and with some added Bezzies, for me it's been the online shooter of the year; delivering in more spectacle in a single match than ten hours of CoD4.
  • EvE Online -- dunno if this counts, but it did get two big content drops this year, so I say MMOs can count in this. A cold, unfeeling game, hard to love and dizzying in its complexity; but so intricate and incredible beneath the surface.
  • Struggling for a fifth just now. Will ponder.

Call of Duty 4 (I DON'T CARE! I got it for Xmas and thusly only started playing it this year)
FarCry2 - A good enough 1 player to make me play it to the end
Braid
Burnout Paradise
Pure (it's decent, but only really here because I ran out of games... I didn't buy many this year, other than the above and GTAiv, and I didn't really like GTAiv)

Fallout 3 - I could happily spend hours playing this
FIFA 09 - 'mon the fitba
N+ - Best XBLA game I've bought
Unreal Tournament 3 - Silly shooty madness
