I've tried, I really have, but I just can't do diddly on the 360 control pad as far as FPS's are concerned. As a veteran of PC Wolf 3D, Doom, Duke 3D, Quake...Quake x, Half Life and etc. etc. etc. this is a real annoyance!

Now, given that Microsoft aren't going to do a keyboard/mouse combo for the 360 (and because third party solutions suck), is there an FPS on the 360 that gives a gentler introduction to control than BioShock or UT3 (or some others I can't remember)?

Indeed. The Girl Friend's first FPS was CoD4. And now she really likes them (hell she's playing mirror's edge at the mo). CoD4 has a nice little bit at the start where you run a little course and it recommends what level you should play it at. Do what it says and you'll be fine.

Hmmm, I don't know. You could try something that's a bit slower, like Rainbow Six Vegas (although it's not easy by any stretch). Halo 3?

I wouldn't recommend CoD4 unless you want to try the single player campaign on Recruit.

It's what I did. While I am fine with FPS in general I never did more than the first level of 2 of CoD 1,2 or 3 due to them being so blatantly scripted and killing me. I went back to 2 after I enjoyed 4 so much and realised I hated it still.

I'm not really sure why.

Personally, my favourite recent FPS (other than the mentioned Bioshock) was The Darkness. I loved that game, even if a lot of people didn't.

And has the advantage of costing £5 as compared to CoD4 which is £40 still (And I don't think I'd recommend it if it were cheaper)

Halo was the first console FPS I found easy to control. Before that Goldeneye, Timesplitter 2 and XIII I found to be rather troublesome.

I loved Prey, too.

I've completed Prey, Darkness and CoD4 in single player, whereas the only time I've ever completed a Halo game was with the Bezzies (and they did most of the work, all told). I quite enjoyed Star Wars Republic Commando as well, actually. Then it put in a bit where you were timed and I never made it so I was stuck dead.

Thats why I recommended it.

It told me to play it on Recruit, and so I did. And it was ace and challenging..

Then I played in on Normal. And it was Ace and Challenging all over again.

Then I played CoD2 on Normal. Then (half of it) on Veteran.

I think it depends on what sort of FPS you want. I would say CoD is probably closest to a PC style shooter, you actually have to aim, but it isn't easy, because of this. Prey, Halo, et al are more arcady in that you just have to point and press, you are firing big blobs of light that can't really miss.
Pick up a few cheap ones as Mr Dave says and see what you think, personally I would try Halo 2 over Halo 3, as I think it is a better game (if you ignore the horridly repetitive corridors about half way through).

How bad are you? Maybe it's just a perceverence thing and it will just click after time.

You could always download Doom and get used to playing that with a pad first, before moving onto 3 axis games.

Well not "special school" bad, but I find it highly difficult (and frustrating) to aim accurately and quickly. I'm always over-shooting the target, over compensating and swinging wildly.

I think if you just pick any of them then you'll get the hang of it, just start with one that's meant to be decent and looks like the sort of game you want to play. If find you are constantly over-controlling then have a look in the options, it most let you alter the sensitivity a bit.

Also slow the sensitivity down on the analogue sticks in game. You'll turn slower but it's better than spinning around like a spanner.

When I got my first Xbox in 2004, I decided there was no way I was ever going to play FPS games on it, as it was awful compared to mouse and keyboard. I ended up relenting and getting the original Halo, but finding it so difficult for ages. Eventually it all clicked into place and I haven't looked back since.

I find playing with mouse and keyboard really weird now.

the double analog stick control is awful...i really don't understand how so many people got on with it. Has any manufacturer ever tried to put a trackball on the controller instead of the 2nd analog?

yes, it could have been terrible, but i still would like to try one of those if existed. For me the most interesting element of fps games is the joy of aiming and feel the results of it (i wish i could explain myself more properly). Having auto-aiming and aiming aids removes all the joy from it. At least the trackball could offer accuracy comparable to mouse+keyboard.

I don't use auto-aim in console FPS games. tbh. It's not really necessary.

You may not want to believe it, but it is possible to become more than competent and even do headshots using a controller. Just because you can't means you haven't practiced enough.

well, i don't. Well, i'm being a bit of a biggot, i admit it, since the only modern (besides the Metroid Prime games) i played was Halo 3 (and Halo 1 some years ago)in some store, and it has horrible aiming. This is a game that received 9's and 10s everywhere, so if this one is shit, its hard to believe some of them are good.

Well take it from someone who was a PC FPS gamer for eight years, then a console FPS gamer for four years - it is possible. Like I said earlier, I originally refused to play FPS games on consoles and had the same viewpoint as you. Once my PC became obsolete, I forced myself to learn. It was hard at first and I was shit for a long time, but now? I'm a bit less shit.

So people who have played both console and PC FPSs extensively are telling you that actually pads are fine once you've got used to them but after a go of Halo in a store you have decided that not only are they all shit but that your opinion is actually worthy of debate?
