I'm pretty sure you do need to use media player but have you downloaded the ipod thing from the marketplace?

I forget the name of it now but it enables you to plug your ipod directly into your xbox and play the tunes off there.

Is there any way to stop the xbox recognising the ipod as an ipod and treat it like an external hard drive with things on it like it does with the PSP?

I doubt it, MS have the media connectivity on a very tight leash. This means that what it does do, happens with minimal fuss and works fine, which is what you'd expect from a gamse console.

I'll be picking up a second 360 cheap for the lounge, the better for streaming my films across the whole house!

You can use Winamp too if you use Winamp Remote.
