I walk downstairs, and see my cat staring at a mouse on the floor in front of her, that she has obviously just brought inside. Their noses are about an inch apart. The mouse is, I assume, frozen in place in fear. This is handy for me, so I slowly crouch down to grab it. As I do so, the mouse reaches out a paw and PUNCHES MY CAT IN THE FACE.

Fair play, mousey. I'm impressed.


I retrieved the mouse and let it go over the back fence.

A story that I really shouldn't commit to the never forgetting interweb (being all that is man etc etc) but ho hum;

In my old house my landlord had 3 cats who were quite fond of bringing home furry presents. One day I was home alone when Spike brought me my very own decapitated mouse and dropped it at my feet. Being all that is man etc etc I promptly ran away screaming and cursing at the cat to take it away. The cat laughed in my face and played with it some more.

Conquering my fears, i donned my Marigolds (again for I am all that is man) and feebly, in fact sheephishly closed my eyes and tried to scoop up mouses into a dustpan. Whilst the cat purred and weaved around my legs clearly ecstatic that I loved my present so much.

At my most manly of moments - eyes closed pink marigolds squeamish look etc , my house mate came in and started laughing at me; picked up the bits of mouse and threw them out of the back door in less than a blink of an eye.

My ex housemate is the (self confessed) campest man on the planet. He is also a massive (6ft 3") drag queen. He laughed so hard at me he nearly died!

Being rescued from a dead mouse by a hugely camp man is one of my favourite pub stories. It's good to be able to chuckle at yourself sometimes always!

edit - I suppose I should explain, I'm 6ft, not slight at all and generally a testosterone fuelled ball of rage for at least 23 hours a day.

I'm guessing Scott isn't the 'healthiest' of people.

He was able to take 18 hours out of his life, widweek, to queue for a computer game. We all know what kind of person Scott is, ie, anything more than WASD and right hand on the mouse, counts as 'exercise'.

I specifically went to bed early last night and got a full 8 hours for the first time in ages! EYES OPEN!

Indeed, and not like when we get rid of them on Friday, we're having a family of four come over to stay for two nights.

I queued up for the last Harry Potter book at midnight, because my wife's a huge fan.

Also, GTA4, because I'm a huge fan.

We didn't dress up for either event, though.

My mate Geoff wandered into the local Tesco at 4am and bought it. No fuss, no queuing.

But the queuing is part of the fun.

Person in queue: "hi! I'm Laura, but everyone calls me Luna! Arf! My favourite character is Draco! I think he's DREAMY and NOT EVIL! Who's your fave? Don't say Harry, cos everyone says Harry! I think Snape's COOL! And totally NOT EVIL! Which house do you think you'd be in? I'D be in HUFFLEPUFF, cos I'm a total dummy! Whay aren't you dressed up? Are you a MUGGLE? Arf!"

There has never been anything, nor will there ever be anything that compels me to queue for something for hours just to get 'it' as soon as humanly possible. Nothing is that good, and if you think there is, there's something seriously wrong with you. I like books, I read a lot, I have favourite authors, but I'm happy to pre-order their new book on Amazon and await its arrival, where it might sit for a week or two while I finish up whatever else I'm reading first.

Got my new monitor here. Hmmm.

Nice picture. However, being a video editor I'm quite sensitive to things being in sync and there's something very wrong here. Audio is leading the video but about half a frame. Just enough to make the monitor crap for sync work.

Put the monitor against the MBP display and the MPB displays leads the Dell very very slightly. Almost imperceptible, but it's there.

I'm speaking to Dell support who think I am barking. But having now done some googling it appears alot of people have noticed this and it's called "input lag" and this model suffers from it.

I'll see what Dell say. I'm unsure what to do as Ebuyer will no doubt charge me if I send it back. Can I even send it back or am I stuck with it?

If you're stuck with it, can you set up a delay in the audio channels somehow? An option in the software maybe, or a simple delay effect box in the audio cables?

I queued at midnight for both Halo 3 and GTA IV, but in the store I used to work in where I still know most of the staff. On both occasions I spent the whole night chatting and catching up with everyone, before buying my game once the queue had gone, going home and going straight to bed. I'd never bother with all that nonsense otherwise.

Why? No harm in it, as the spoiler I shouted out wasn't actually true. Not like I actually spoiled the end of the book for them or anything

I just don't see the logic in queueing up for hours to get something at midnight when you know you've got a guaranteed copy. Why not just wait until the morning so that you can go down there when there aren't any queues, then have all day to read it instead of feeling proper tired because you've spent the entire night queueing and falling asleep after page 5?

As a kid, I never stayed up all night on Christmas Eve either.

And after all that, it's harry cunting potter. Guh.

It's still a very cunty thing to do. I hate it when people shout at queues, real spoiler or fake spoiler.

What it sounds like you're actually shouting is, "I think I'm better than you sad nerds! Ha ha ha!"

It comes across as abusive, basically, whether it's meant that way or not.

And you've got to remember you're the thousandth person that evening to shout at the queue.

It's like running up to Richard Wilson and shouting "I don't believe it!" and thinking you're really funny.



But the point isn't just to get the book OMG AT MIDNIGHT EXACTLY!!!!!!!!! - though that's obviously a part of it - but it's the whole experience, the build up. It turns just getting a new game or book or seeing a new film into a proper event. It's fun and the atmosphere and camaraderie is usually amazing at these things. (GTA IV was a bit of a damp squib, mind, but it was still fun.)

I get excited about stuff I love, like new movies or games, so I love to have an event that celebrates and indulges that excitement and allows me to share that excitement with other people.

Harry Potter was slightly different in that I wasn't very excited about beforehand. I wanted to avoid spoilers before reading it - which meant getting it early - but I've had been happy with getting it during the day or at the weekend or whatever. (I like Harry Potter, but I wouldn't class myself as any sort of fan.) It was my wife who wanted to go at midnight. But it was excellent and I'm glad I went. It's one of those times I remember with great fondness - the Death Eaters roaming the streets, the balloons, the excitement of some of the kids who were there way after their bedtimes, the friendly rivalry with the other bookshops' queues, all that.

It's like a carnival more than anything else and, possibly, it taps into a need for community that we have but which doesn't exist in modern society - if you want to get a bit deep and wanky.

And when we got home from the Harry Potter thing we took turns reading the book to each other over the weekend and finished it with sore throats in a couple of days, spoiler-free, which was obviously excellent.

It shows the power of excellent viral marketting that a more than mediocre book written by a grasping hag can gain more popularity and acclaim than books and authors who are infinitely superior in every conceivable way.
